Do You Allow Your Kids to Play at Unknown Homes?

As a working mom, I rely heavily on my children's nanny to arrange playdates with my lil ones' friends in and around the neighborhood.

As a working mom, I rely heavily on my children's nanny to arrange playdates with my lil ones' friends in and around the neighborhood. I frequently return home at the end of the day only to learn that my kids (and nanny) spent the afternoon at a classmate's home or that we hosted a slew of tots for an after school play session.

Sometimes, when I receive the daily report, my son informs me that they played at the home of a child I don't know. In most cases, the caretakers know each other from home, the playground, or mutual friends, and make the arrangements to introduce the kids. Having worked for us for almost five years, I trust my nanny's judgment and know she wouldn't take my kids to an unsafe environment, but it is a bit odd to know that my kids are visiting a place I've never been.

When I mentioned the unusual situation to a fellow working mom, she told me that she never allows her kids to play at homes where she doesn't know the parents. In those situations, she requires the new friends to come to her. Every parent has their own set of rules, but would you allow your kids to play in unfamiliar homes?

Kissing Caretaker: A Welcomed Sign of Affection?

Caretakers step in for parents when they aren't around.

Caretakers step in for parents when they aren't around. Nannies are often the ones who shuttle kids to and from school, nurse bumps and bruises, and play at the park with the youngsters. The babysitters form strong bonds with their charges, and many dole out hugs and kisses as a result. Are those expressions of affection (from nonrelatives) welcome in your household?

Whether she's at your house at the crack of dawn each day or gives you a date night with your spouse, there's no denying the importance of the babysitter in your life! Mamas trust these wonderful souls with the most important thing in their lives, so be sure to show them how much you appreciate their work during the holidays!

Clockwise from top left: Carrying the tots and all of their belongings around can strain anyone's back! A gift certificate for a massage (any price) can help her feel rested. Your babysitter may give you the opportunity to have a night at the theater, but that doesn't mean she doesn't like to go herself! A series of theater gift certificates ($10 each) encourages the arts. TKO's Slap Watches ($50) not only ensure that the sitter arrives on time, but they're also fun. If your nanny spends lots of time playing with your kids outside, a warm hat and scarf, like these from Ugg ($120), will help keep her toasty. Give her the gift of music with the ultra-small and hip Apple iPod Nano ($140) — she may even be able to hide it from the kids!

Ways to Communicate with Nanny

The transfer of power from mom to nanny in the morning and from nanny back to mom in the evening is always hectic. With so much information that needs to be communicated, and so little time to do it, key details can easily fall through the cracks. While cell phones and text messaging can fill a caretaker in on small details, finding an effective means for relaying daily information makes the communication much easier for everyone. We looked at five popular methods for sharing information and want to know which works best for you?

Diaper Bags

BabySugar Diaries: Separate Diaper Bags For Mom and Nanny

A woman's purse can be an extension of her personality.

A woman's purse can be an extension of her personality. While some are neat and organized, others can be likened to a black hole where only its owner knows where to find things. So when a woman begins to use her diaper bag as her primary satchel, it begins to take on a personality of its own.

On the playground this weekend, a friend spent five minutes sifting through her diaper bag in search of a pack of wipes before throwing her hands up in disgust and announcing that she was off to buy a new bag — giving the current one to her nanny and getting a new one for her own use on weekends. I've also noticed other moms carrying designer diaper sacks on the weekend, while their caregivers tote along less pricey versions during the week. Ninety-three percent of LilSugar readers think parents should pay for a diaper bag, but should mama have a separate one for herself?

  • Nanny wants a diaper bag? Then six percent of LilSugar readers believe that she should buy one.
  • Kids love to go out and about to movies, museums, and events, but 14 percent of LilSugar readers said that the nanny should pay her own admission.
  • When a nanny buys her charges a small trinket or treat, 65 percent of LilSugar readers believe the cost should come out of her own pocket.
  • There are daily expenses that come with having kids and 24 percent of LilSugar readers think the nanny should cover them and then be reimbursed.

Fast Food

Mommy Dearest: Fast Food Playdate Dilemma

Mommy Dearest –

Yesterday, while toiling away at work, I received a phone call from my son's nanny. It seems the friend he was playing with had been promised a lunch at McDonald's and had invited my kindergartner along. I try to avoid fast food restaurants at all costs, so our nanny called to ask if it was OK to go for lunch with the friend. In the background I could already hear my son discussing the cartoon characters he saw on the restaurant's windows and rather than subject his caretaker to a meltdown, I acquiesced.

I am not some food-crazed mom (I give my children plenty of chicken fingers at home, albeit not fried), but I really don't like my children eating all of that fried food and thinking that food comes with toys. Would it be inappropriate for me to ask his playmate's mom to not promise such "treats" on days our kids play together?

Family Has Nanny Sit in Separate Section of Airplane?

There's a lot of nanny business going on!

There's a lot of nanny business going on! Kourtney Kardashian recently blogged about traveling with her son, Mason, and referenced the fact that her family sat in a different section of the plane than the babe's nanny. She wrote:

Also, I noticed a comment on one of my previous blogs about how I sent Mason to the back of the plane to sit "with the masses." I did have a nanny traveling with us on this trip, because my mom and I were flying to Chicago for a work appearance. Mason was a little bored with being in the same spot with us for four hours and wanted a change of scenery, so we had him hang out with the nanny for 10 minutes.
