This At-Home Gloss Keeps My Highlighted Hair From Getting Brassy

In the past, I never really had issues with my hair. Sure, the texture is thin, and occasionally it can be a bitch to deal with, but it holds a curl well, it's easy to style, and I can add lots of volume with the right mix of products. It wasn't until I started coloring my hair that I started having issues.

I'm naturally a dark brunette, and I'm not sure if it's because I live in California near the beach, but I just love the look of sun-kissed hair. I got highlights early last year, and although I loved them at first, I started noticing issues a month or so after getting them. Namely: brassiness.

I've had highlights in the past without any issues, but for some reason, no matter how many colorists I go to, they always seem to turn a funky shade of orange-red these days. The quickest and easiest fix is getting a hair gloss, but it's impossible to do an in-salon treatment as often as I need one. There are two main reasons I love using this product, even though it is a bit of a hassle (more on that later). Number one, the color it gives, and number two, the way it makes my hair feel. As I mentioned, I've been having an issue with brassiness lately. Although this product doesn't completely get rid of all of the red hues my hair loves to cling to, the shade "dark brown" does help a lot. It gives my hair a nice tint, and it helps mask the discolored tones I'm sick of seeing.

It also leaves my hair impossibly soft and insanely shiny. This is one of those products that I use at home, and immediately after using it, my girlfriends always ask if I got my hair done — it's that good. My hair always feels silky AF, and when I give myself an at-home blowout immediately after, it genuinely looks like I just had an in-salon treatment.

First and foremost, the brand recommends doing a strand test before applying the product all over your hair. Once that's done and you've determined the product will work for you, it says you should start by shaking the bottle well while in the shower. After shampooing, it suggests squeezing the excess water from your hair and then using the tip applicator to apply from the mid lengths to ends until your hair is fully saturated. Next, massage the product through your hair, all the way up to your roots. Leave it on for two to three minutes, then rinse thoroughly. After the shower, style as usual.

I follow the directions with a few exceptions. The first — and most important, in my opinion — I wear dishwashing gloves when I apply this product. The product is thin, and it gets everywhere in my shower — even under my fingernails. I always have sheer nail polish on, and I've learned the hard way that if I don't scrub the fuck out of my nails after using this, it'll leave a brown tint under my nails that's visible for all to see. Additionally, although you don't need to use conditioner afterward, I find that I like to do so just to add some softness to my hair.

I love this product, but there is no denying that it's messy. I'm just trying to keep it real with you. At-home hair dye is never "easy" or "clean," in my opinion, but the first time I used this product, I was a little put off by how much of a hassle it was. However, the results were just too good to deny.

Also, it does have a bit of a "hair dye" smell, which I've noticed typically fades after the first day, but it's just something to be wary of if you're sensitive to strong smells.
