What Do You Think of Postretirement Couples Starting New Families?

When most people think about retirement, they dream of picking up a leisurely new hobby, traveling the globe, or spending more time with their families — but starting a new family of their own? The New York Times reports on the growing number of retired individuals or couples adopting children. Some of the families featured were empty nesters who had already had a "first round" of raising kids, some were taking over for family members who were unable to care for their own children, and still others were first-time parents.
"Children do far better in families than in institutional or temporary care," said Adam Pertman of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute and author of Adoption Nation. "These are competent, vetted people." The approval process for becoming an adoptive parent is a rigorous one, and the need for qualified families in the US is great. According to federal data, in 2011, more than 50,000 children were adopted with the aid of public child-welfare agencies, with more than 104,000 waiting to be adopted, the Times reported.
What do you think of couples or individuals in their 50s, 60s, or even 70s adopting children? Weigh in by voting in our poll below.

Who's at Fault When a Tour Company Offers Handicapped Disney "Guides"?
There's a new secret way to cut the lines at Disney, but it involves a serious moral sacrifice. The NY Post reports that a wealthy set of visitors has been hiring disabled "tour guides" to accompany their families to the Orlando theme park, affording them access to handicapped entrances, thereby bypassing the lines for rides. The tour company, called Dream Tours Florida, was uncovered by Dr. Wednesday Martin, a social anthropologist who discovered the disturbing trend while researching her book, Primates of Park Avenue. "It's insider knowledge that very few have and share carefully," Martin said. Apparently, you need a referral to even get through to the business, as Dream Tours' number is unlisted. Disney allows each wheelchair or scooter-bound visitor to bring up to six guests to an accessible entrance for each attraction. A woman who employed Dream Tours' services told the Postthat she hired a guide to accompany her family of four through the park in a motorized scooter with a "handicap" sign on it, and the group received special access throughout the park. We're pretty sure that we can all agree that this practice is reprehensible, but whom do you think is most at fault? Sound off!

Is Abercrombie & Fitch the Bully of Teen Clothing Retailers?

Would you let your kids shop at a store that goes against the values you're trying to instill in them? Recently, inflammatory comments made by Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries in a 2006 interview have been recirculating on the web, instigating anger and outrage amongst the brand's would-be consumers and moms looking out for the best interest of their kids. According to Huffington Post, Jeffries made the following statement in a 2006 interview with Salon.com:
In every school, there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids. Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don't belong [in our clothes], and they can't belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely. Those companies that are in trouble are trying to target everybody: young, old, fat, skinny. But then you become totally vanilla. You don't alienate anybody, but you don't excite anybody, either.
Abercrombie's sweet spot has always been the teen and preteen market, which makes Jeffries's comments especially alarming. At a time when kids are at their most impressionable, most self-conscious, and most susceptible to being teased or alienated by their peers, what sort of a message does this send?
For years, the brand — which encompasses an "Abercrombie Kids" line — has garnered attention for its controversial practices and marketing methodology. According to the Salon.com article, in 2004, Abercrombie paid $40 million to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by minority employees who felt discriminated against. In 2005, a group of high school girls made the media rounds in protest of t-shirts with phrases like "Do I make you look fat?" and "Who needs a brain when you have these?" And now, Jeffries's candid commentary is igniting a new flame.
What do you think? Do the CEO's remarks mean your family will be boycotting the Abercrombie & Fitch brand?
