Tell Mommy: Do You Limit Your Child's TV Time?

A recent study from the University of Chicago found that television might not be turning our children's minds to mush after all. According to the study the boob tube can help expose lil ones to the outside world and those who watch it actually do slightly better on tests. Of course, what your child is watching, and how long he is watching it needs to be factored in.

Certain things around the holidays make us nostalgic and Charlie Brown is one of them. I grew up watching the bald and lovable lil guy and the rest of the Peanuts gang as Halloween drew near when the animated specials aired on television.

It's a tradition I'm passing along to my tots starting with It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown ($10).

Though the initial broadcast took place 11 years before I was born, this timeless classic continues to win over audiences with the story of Linus believing in The Great Pumpkin, trick-or-treating and the tribulations that result and Violet's Halloween party.

If you're looking for something other than candy to gift your gremlins on Friday, this DVD is the perfect present. You wee ones can get a sneak preview on ABC tonight!

Sadly, if PBS has its way, future generations of kids will never have the opportunity to get to know Mr. Rogers and his neighborhood as we did. The public television network recently announced plans to drop Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood from its programming schedule next month, removing the show from its daily syndication lineup and only sending it out for one weekend airing each week. The network says it is doing so to make room for new children's programming.

Though today's tots may be more attracted to the fast-paced, high-tech shows that air on Nickelodeon and Disney, Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood stood as a reminder that children need calm and reassuring environments for learning. Mr. Rogers' common refrain, you're “special—just because of who you are,” is rarely communicated as simply. For 33 years he donned his cardigan sweaters and sneakers and spoke slowly and directly to his viewers about reality and make-believe, as well as a variety of other subjects.

As most lilsugar readers know, I am a huge fan of Jon and Kate Plus 8, a show that gives parents a peek into the harried lives of a couple with two sets of multiples. I remember watching their first special in awe of how such young parents managed to juggle their eight offspring. So I was stunned to recently learn that there are entire websites dedicated to smearing the Gosselin's name, one of which is supposedly written by a relative's sister. I can't imagine any well-intentioned human being who realized their actions could adversely affect the Gosselin children would do such a thing. To read why I am appalled by these people's actions,

Then, while Jon and his mini mes — Aaden, Collin and Joel— were at man camp working out and drinking smoothies, Joel introduced himself as "daddy's son". The Baby Borrowers: Interview with Natalie

Would you let a teen borrow your baby to teach them a lesson in life? We talked to one mom who did. Natalie, a 31-year-old mother of four, offered up her youngest child, 6-month-old, Etta to be cared for by teenage couple, Sean (18) and Kelsey (18) on last night's episode of the The Baby Borrowers.

NBC's new show takes five young couples and thrusts them into the real world by giving them a house to live in, followed by babies, tots, school aged children, preteens, teens, pets and elderly people as charges. The series couldn't be more timely with magazine covers dedicated to Jamie Lynn Spears's transition from Nickelodeon star to new mama. And, it's the glamorization of teen pregnancy that is why Natalie, who had her first son at the tender age of 17, decided to volunteer (no one on the show was paid) her offspring. With a professional nanny following the couple, and the ability to watch them on monitors and intervene at any time, the mother helped Kelsey experience the realities — the sleepless nights and frustration — of motherhood.

Did you have any apprehension about handing your baby over to teenagers? Not really — I thought it was important to do the show and everything was in place as far as safety measures. So I wasn't in fear at all as far as their (Natalie's son, Benjamin appears in the second episode) physical well being and I think that I was on hand to ensure emotional well being for them. I went over and interjected at one point.

What was the breaking point that made you decide to interfere? Well, Sean got frustrated and then he cursed, and said, "Put it in the other room it's just gonna cry anyway". The fact that he cursed and was referring to my daughter as "it" was my last straw.

Three is the magic number. At least, that's what the Gosselins discovered on last night's episode of Jon and Kate Plus 8. Since the twins, Cara and Madelyn, were at school, Jon and Kate realized that splitting the sextuplets in half allowed each parent to spend quality time with their threesome and enjoy the simple luxuries of everyday life like popping tots in the car for an outing.

While the guys headed out for a game of golf, the girls ran out for groceries and did a baking project. Just when you thought it couldn't get much cuter than the three lil ladies — Alexis, Leah, and Hannah — grinning around the kitchen, the show cut to the boys — Collin, Aaden, and Joel — at the golf course cruising around in a cart, and running around the course letting off steam. The parents have never looked so relaxed and the kids have never been so quiet. While I love the banter and chaos of the Gosselins's everyday life, whether you have two kids or 20, having less than the lot seems to make certain tasks much more manageable.

Last night's episode of Jon and Kate Plus 8 wasn't all about the twins and sextuplets, it focused on Jon and Kate. And, while there weren't any scenes of kids impersonating animals or eating modeling clay, the couple proved just as interesting. Before they became parents, the mom and dad now beloved for their bickering, banter, and ability to make raising eight children look doable, were a couple of lovebirds.

The home video footage they shared revealed a smitten Kate staring at a starry eyed Jon. There were snippets of their engagement, wedding and honeymoon in Disney World. At 22 and 24, the carefree newlyweds who met at a picnic just after Kate finished nursing school and Jon returned from backpacking though Europe, never suspected they would eventually be elbows deep in diapers and driving a family van. Five years later, they were the parents of eight. And, now as they manage their growing brood, though the affectionate glances may be fewer and further between, they are still there. The thing I love about Jon and Kate is that they are real.

Do you believe in built in babysitters? Last night, I caught an episode of Supernanny where two teenagers were raising their three younger brothers while the parents worked. The girls, ages 14 and 17 for all intents and purposes had taken on both the roles of mother and father.

Between cooking, tending to housework and caring for their lil brothers, ages 2, 3, and 4, the young ladies were also expected to home school themselves. While this situation seems appalling, the parents didn't see anything wrong with it. And, that proves true for so many Americans who believe in the built in babysitter — parents, in-laws, friends and relatives who take on part of the responsibility of raising babe without any compensation. I believe that tots are solely their mom and pop's charge and that anyone else who lends a hand should be given kudos and appropriate payment, be it literal or verbal. Do you share this sentiment?

Most parents dream of their child's wedding — the day that they hand him or her off to start a family of their own. They picture their daughter walking down the aisle or their son standing at attention. But, some moms and dads can't bring themselves to attend their offspring's union if it isn't what they envisioned.

It was wedded bliss for Kevin Walker and Scotty Wandell on the season finale of Brothers and Sisters and while the couple's commitment ceremony was thrown by Kevin's ecstatic mother, Nora, Scotty's parents refused to attend. Despite Kevin's heartfelt invitation, they could not come to terms with their son's gay marriage.
