Dads are supposed to protect their offspring, so it's unsettling to think that Harold Bray stole from his children. The Arizona man has been charged with one count of identity theft for using his 8-year-old son's social security number to rent his apartment. The father of two children under 12 used his stepson's social security card to open a cable services account in 2006.

January Jones is everywhere right now: This week's Mad Men was exceptionally stellar, her scandalous GQ issue is currently on stands — and the latest news this morning is that she will be appearing on the big screen soon, as well. (Much like some of the other Mad Men ladies.) Jones has been cast along with Diane Kruger in the thriller Unknown White Male. The film follows a man (Liam Neeson) who awakes from a coma to find that his identity has been stolen.

Everyday folks aren't armed with the high-tech equipment to battle elaborate identity theft schemers, but we do have one thing going for us — our common sense. Setting up various, unpredictable passwords for your online accounts is one way to guard yourself, and we can thank Mrs. Federal Reserve Chairman for demonstrating another basic lesson.
Ben Bernanke's checking account was one of hundreds that was wrapped up in an identity theft ring after his wife Anna's purse was stolen at a Starbucks.

It takes up a little bit of room, but buying a shredder is a smart use of your money and space. Fortunately, I've never lost my purse or wallet, but during instances where I momentarily thought that I lost my debit card or driver's license, panic surged through me. The automatic reaction when something happens that could compromise your everyday livelihood is fear and worry, but you need to overcome those sensations very quickly and focus to ensure nothing more happens. You want to be one of those people saying "it could be worse," not one who says, "they emptied my bank account and stole my identity."

Last week, in the biggest case of identity theft ever, 11 men in five countries were charged with stealing more than 40 million credit card numbers from US retailers. Unfortunately, 73 percent of you aren't strangers to having your credit card information compromised, but it seems that some of us might be in the dark about our card's safety.
According to The Wall Street Journal, most states require full disclosure to customers when credit-card data is stolen from a company's stores.

Dear Savvy,
My boyfriend's family has had a lot of money problems in the past few years that they kept hidden from him. Things all came out in the open when he was kicked out of school because his parents couldn't pay his tuition, which they had told him was already paid. Turns out they had almost lost their house and had to resort to opening credit cards in both his and his brother's names, which they couldn't afford to make payments on.

Last night saw the opening double bill of Spooks: Code 9 on BBC3. I recapped the first episode for you earlier today, but now's time to look back over episode 2's events. I can't wait to read your comments on the episode, but for now here's my thoughts:
- We focus in on Jez in the opening moments as he heads over to a woman's house for a booty call.

Acquiring your free credit report is relatively simple: Just remember to visit AnnualCreditReport.com for up to three reports each year, not tricky FreeCreditReport.com.
Unfortunately, getting your free credit score isn't as direct. There are certain little loopholes that can get you a complimentary score, but there also a handful of legitimate circumstances that grant you a free credit score — no slick loopholes required.
