The Double Standard Is Alive and Well at Work

We’ve already determined that the gender gap hasn’t quite closed - especially at the top, men are continuing to outearn women, sometimes by an alarming amount. But according to New York Times blogger and management coach Peggy Klaus, the wage gap isn’t the only gender issue women face in the workplace today; the good ol' double standard is also still alive and well. Last night, the London Evening Standard awards took place celebrating stars of the silver screen. Nowhere Boy star Anne-Marie Duff was there in a cute pink bow adorned dress hiding her bump. She wasn't the only one to wear a bright colour as Jaime Winstone went for a sexy siren look in a little red dress and Nathalie Press wore a '70s inspired gold gown. Eva Green and Sarah Brown stuck to classic little black dresses which were both knee length. Out of these five lovely ladies, who do you think is the best dressed?

Josh Joins Hamlets Jude and David To Celebrate Theatre

Josh Hartnett, Jude Law and David Tennant slipped on their ties for the Evening Standard Theatre Awards at London's Royal Opera House yesterday. Josh is becoming quite a fixture on the London scene, thanks to his role in Rain Man, and he looked dreamy alongside his fellow thespians. While David will be bringing his take on Hamlet to London next week, we've got to wait until summer to see Jude in the role. Jude's ex, Sadie Frost, who wore a red dress to the ceremony yesterday, will also be treading the boards next year, as an obsessive Madonna fan. Sounds intriguing.

Fab Flash: Evening Standard Reveals Fashion's Most Influential

Last night The Evening Standard unveiled their 1000 London's Most Influential List divided in to key sections including fashion. The top five fashion list (in no particular order) was revealed as Stella McCartney, Sir Philip Green, stylist Edward Enninful, Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman and TV stylist Gok Wan.

The complete fashion list includes models, retailers, designers, stylists, editors and photographers. Models of the moment Agyness Deyn and Jourdan Dunn featured in the list as did Dame Vivienne Westwood and Christopher Bailey.

Big congratulations go to fellow fashion blogger Susie Bubble of Style Bubble who featured in the Up and Coming section.

We see the Leaping Bunny logo a lot when buying cosmetics and household cleaners, is it better or just good marketing?

The Corporate Standard of Compassion for Animals is a pledge by a company not to conduct or commission animal testing of their product/ingredients.

The Leaping Bunny logo means that the company has pledged and offers its assurance that they are in compliance with the only internationally-recognized “cruelty-free” standard and logo. This label has been recognized as highly meaningful and would be a great source to look for when buying cruelty free products.

Fit's Tip: Many companies continue to use bunnies, or similar natural icons, trying to imply they have a policy on animal testing. The appearance of a rabbit offers insufficient assurance about a company's actual policies or practices - so make sure it's the Leaping Bunny!

The Runaways: Guitars Make Girls Grow Up Fast

Picture this: it's 1975. The airwaves are dominated by the likes of David Bowie, The Eagles, and the Bee Gees. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, a rock group - made up entirely of teenage girls - explodes onto the scene. In no time they've signed a record deal and are touring Japan, singing to thousands of fans who can't get enough. Sounds like standard film fodder, but what rocks about The Runaways is that it all actually happened.

The film is truly about the band's front-runners, Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning). Joan is the mysterious, sexually ambiguous rhythm guitar player who just wants to be taken seriously as a rock musician. She approaches producer Kim Fowler (played to a T by Michael Shannon) outside of a club one night, and after an introduction to drummer Sandy West their girl group emerges. Across town, 16-year-old Cherie Currie is slowly starting to come into her own as a social outcast from a broken home. We get a glimpse of her star power as she writhes fearlessly on stage, embodying David Bowie for a high school talent show. She meets Joan and Kim in a club one night, and weeks later she's the blond bombshell, the lead singer, and the face of The Runaways.

It's hard to believe that a story so chock-full of cliches could actually be based on history, but it's true: Joan Jett really did meet Fowler outside of a club, and he really did have a drummer already lined up. Their smash hit "Cherry Bomb" really was written on the spot for Cherie Currie when she came in for an audition. And, sadly, Currie really did spiral out of control and was all washed up by her 18th birthday.

Stewart holds her own in Joan Jett's shoes (and mullet, and leather), but it's Fanning who steals the show. Gone is the baby faced actress who was introduced to the world as Sean Penn's precocious four-year-old in I Am Sam, and in her place is a powerhouse performer. It's almost eerie watching Cherie come-of-age (and beyond) on the big screen knowing that Fanning has grown up in the spotlight herself. Fanning truly makes Cherie transform from an independent yet callow teenager into a pill-popping, corset-wearing rock diva. Fanning manages to push the limits of Cherie's attitude problems, but holds back before going over-the-top with the dramatics.

I was disappointed to see that Floria Sigismondi's direction often falls in line with the rock movie stereotypes. Once the girls hit the road, the band scenes felt like they could have come from any movie. We're hit with the classic dizzying camera angles set to music, supposedly exemplifying all that is rock and roll: a roller coaster ride representing the band's performances, use of mind-altering substances, and experimenting with sex. It's kind of a staple for a music biopic, but the "whirlwind rise to the top" scenes almost felt too fast-forwarded.

Still, it's a ride that's fun to be on. The girls live out a teenage fantasy of fame and rebellion (albeit a vision that ends too quickly), but watching as they scream and squirm and make trouble is the perfect fodder for a popcorn flick.

French School Children Dine on Five Course Lunches

In France, public school students sit down to a five course lunch every day, and no meal is repeated for two months. Your child's prepacked lunch of favorites probably pales in comparison. A Time magazine article, marveled at the French public school system's lunch program since US moms try a variety of tricks to entice their tots to eat something other than the standard peanut butter and jelly sandwich, chips and a piece of fruit. While our first lady begins an initiative to increase vegetable consumption among lil tykes, our French counterparts can sit back and peruse a monthly menu that includes an hors d’oeuvre, salad, main course, cheese plate and dessert as well as dinner suggestions for home.

Some may argue that the time to consume such a meal would be better placed in the classroom, but given the staggering US childhood obesity epidemic, and the known benefits of the French diet, perhaps spending more time learning about food would benefit our children. What do you think?
