Mommy Dearest: Is It Okay For Tots to Pee in Public?

Mommy Dearest,

I was downtown shopping with my friend and her two-and-a-half year old son, who is being potty trained. We were in a communal area admiring the city's Christmas tree when he announced he was about to have an accident. My friend knew he wouldn't make it to the department store across the street (where the closest restroom was) so fearing he would soil himself, she pulled down his pants and let him pee in the shrubbery. It took me a minute to realize what she was doing, but after he was finished and we continued on our way, I told her I thought it gross to let him pee on public property. She said I'd understand once I become a mother that it was an emergency and since he was wearing underwear, it was the only option other than letting him wet his pants. What do you think?

Potty training can be stressful for kids and parents, so you might as well have a sense of humor about it!

These training briefs ($12), which display a pee guy on the front and a poo guy on the back, will entertain the trainer and the trainee. They are lined with yellow (yes, it seems that was intentional) and should fit one-and-a-half to two-year-old boys.

The characters are actually the same as the Pee and Poo Guy plush toys we saw a while back. Perhaps the set would help your lil guy go from pull ups to undies?

If the thought of using a public restroom gives you the heebie jeebies, I've got a product right up your alley. Potty Mitts ($5 for a pack of 12) are disposable gloves designed to keep kids germ free when using unknown bathrooms. The water-resistant gloves can withstand puddles and splashes and fold up to fit into mom's purse or diaper bag. What puzzles me the most about this odd invention is the fact that they are not flushable. The company claims this encourages kids to keep them on as they exit the stall and avoid germs on doors, but I wonder how long a little one is really going to keep the gloves on?

Mommy's Lil Helper: The Potty Whisperer

As I continue my journey to the land of the diaper-free child, I was struck by a story about the "Baby Whisperer" on The Today Show earlier this week.

Wendy Sweeney, a registered nurse and mother of six, created a one-day potty training program called Booty Camp. Based on Nathan H. Azrin’s book Toilet Training in Less Than a Day, her program goes on the belief that the tot is ultimately responsible for potty training, and must clean up after herself if there is an accident. According to Sweeney, if you ask the child if she has to go to the bathroom, you are in charge of her body, and that is a big no, no.

Potty training is a necessary evil in parenting. I am ready for my daughter to be rid of the diapers, but she's not quite there yet. Even though we're working on it, I think she's still going to be diaper bound for a while longer! Many parents believe their children are ready for the potty when they show initiative and can say, "pee pee" or "Potty." When did your child leave the pampers behind?

What gets you fired up? I usually cheer upon hearing good news — a family member gets engaged, a friend is pregnant or my sister buys a house. I also tend to lose my mind during certain sporting events, but I never thought I'd be jumping up and down when it came to the porcelain bowl.

The first time my sweetheart made a deposit to the toilet, I felt like a potty training mascot! I yelled, clapped and rooted her along as she made another step through childhood.

I knew I was a mother when I invented a potty dance.

Having trouble getting your wee one fired up for potty training? Maybe snuggling up with a plush poo or pee toy would get him interested. These machine washable excrements can be cuddled, jumped on and played with until a tot's content. Perhaps junior's new buddies will get him to the toilet.

Why Didn't Anybody Tell Me? Bathtub Disaster

Apparently it's time for my babe to start potty training. I feel like I did when I was first pregnant – totally lost. I wasn't sure if I should get the potty that sits on the ground or the kind that fits over the regular seat? Clearly there are drawbacks to both.

The former option means I go from changing dirty diapers to cleaning out a toilet. Not much of a step up, even if it's only a phase. The latter would require me to take the seat on and off every time she uses it because we are a one toilet family. That wouldn't be much fun either.

I went shopping and heeded to the store clerk's advice and purchased the $25 Baby Bjorn that sits on the ground. She said the other type is better once tots are a lil bigger and can sit on the adult toilet.

All of this potty talk makes me dizzy. I'll update you on my progress, but if you have any advice, please dish it in the comments section.
