Baby Mama Interview: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler

Baby Mama takes a comedic approach to fertility.

Tina Fey plays a successful businesswoman yearning to have a child. After learning she has a million in one chance of getting pregnant, she finds a surrogacy center and begins the process of finding a baby mama, played by Amy Poehler.

When asked about the research they conducted into birthing centers and natural birth methods, the actresses discussed the experts they had on set:

Tina Fey: We had some experts on set who were wonderful, like very earthy women who came up to me and were like (in a breathy voice), "Are you thinking about having another child now?" and I was like "No," and she was like "You should consider a water birth" and I’m like, "Didn’t you hear the part where I said no!"
Amy Poehler: The same woman was telling pregnant people in like their 9th month . . .
TF: Because a lot of the other women in the class were very, very pregnant . . .
AP: And she was explaining nice ways to make love and the women were like, "Uh, no."
TF: But by the end of it, I did want to have a water birth.
AP: You don't need to have a baby to have a water birth.

They were also asked about the stress that new parents face today and the differences that go into raising a city child:

TF: My daughter starts preschool next year so I just went through the process of taking her to her preschool interviews and you are just hoping "Please don’t poop yourself during that time."
AP: Did she wear a little power suit?
TF: Yeah, she had a little power suit!
AP: And did she have a teeny tiny brief case?
TF: She had little teeny tiny resumes.
AP: Made of candy!
TF: Yeah, she ate it. That you don’t find in the suburbs.
AP: Yeah I like that moment [in the film] where they say Wingspan and Banjo do you want to play with Groovy and Cheyenne?

Given Fey’s decision to give her daughter a traditional name Alice, we asked the women about Hollywood’s penchant for giving their children odd names:

TF: I like interesting names. My daughter’s middle name is sort of unusual, but they are all family names. I think that when you have a kid you have to try to think that when this child is an adult, how is this name going to suit the person. I like the name Apple.
AP: I’m just gonna name my kids numbers. New Dude, Little Dude, and eight George Foremans.

With Knocked Up and Juno having already covered pregnancy over the past year, the women were also asked why Hollywood is giving pregnancy so much attention:

TF: I think it is a universal experience and there may be a generation of comedy writers that are hitting that age where they all have kids and the guys would have written their dating fantasy comedies 15 years ago. People write what they know and it might be a generational thing.
AP: I think that Juno is very different from Knocked Up and our film is very different from that too. They’re all kind of different. Although they all tend to deal with a similar topic that’s really where it ends. But I think that our film is in the same way as Knocked Up it's just kind of straight up . . . with jokes.

Dakota Fanning Tells Us About Channeling Cherie Currie For The Runaways

Dakota Fanning smiled for fans before joining Kristen Stewart yesterday at the NYC press junket for their film The Runaways. While Kristen was content to talk about new friends and Joan Jett's racy words of wisdom on guitar playing, Dakota was more interested in sharing about her career and how she prepped for the role of Cherie Currie. Between playing with her many gold bracelets and laughing with Kristen, Dakota said:

On her friendship with Kristen: "I didn’t know that it would be so hard to talk about when your friend is right here! I can’t do it, I don’t know why!"
On overcoming insecurities: "I think we all have our insecurities. I mean, for Cherie onstage, she’s a completely different person than she was offstage. And still to this day, she’s kept that vulnerability and that innocence. I don’t really know exactly what her insecurities are, but I think we all have them and that’s something you have to figure out for yourself. I don’t know if I have any advice, though, that will help anyone with their insecurities because I have some of my own."
On her career goals: I just want to keep doing what I love to do. I don’t know that I have anywhere specifically where I want to take my career. It’s just what I love. It’s the only thing I know how to do - it’s the only thing that I feel like I’m okay at. I just want to keep going. I hope that people continue to want me to be in their movies and to bring stories like this to life. "

On being nervous about going into the studio to record the music: “I was definitely nervous but I didn’t think that any other way would be acceptable. I thought the only way to go was to record songs, if I was able to and if I had the voice to do it. I was really excited about getting to do that, but very nervous at the same time. It was just kind of - thrown in a record studio and that was it, that’s what you hear in the movie and what’s on the soundtrack. I don’t’ think I really realized that until I was there, and suddenly it was over, and I thought we would re-record them a bunch of times, but nope! That was it. Which was probably good, because that’s actually how they recorded them. They were just thrown in there and only did it a couple of times."
On how she got into the character of Cherie: "I don’t know if there was anything specific that I was thinking. I think when you love something so much, and you love the character - Cherie has become my friend and has inspired me so much in my own life - you want to be the best that you can for them. Because a lot of people don’t know who Cherie is, and this is going to be maybe their only way of knowing her story. It is a lot of pressure, I guess, but it was good pressure. It was exciting and a challenge. I just think when you know a character so well, you just know what to do."
On if her young fans will get this role: “The younger audiences, their only way of knowing The Runaways will be through this film. And maybe that will lead them to go back and listen to the music or watch the Live in Japan videos. I mean, I didn’t know who The Runaways were when I first read the script. I didn’t know who Cherie Currie was and what her story was - people obviously know Joan Jett, but they don’t know Cherie.”

Kristen Stewart Talks About Meeting Friends on Set and Joan Jett Saying to "F-ck" Her Guitar on Camera!

Kristen Stewart was up early this morning for Regis & Kelly, then she was off to the Loews Regency Hotel for the press junket for The Runaways. She was still in her tight leather pants while we caught up with her and Dakota, and both girls touched on how close they got to their real-life counterparts Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. Kristen also chatted a little about working with the friends she's grown close to on set, and she also shared a racy tip that Joan gave her on really connecting with her guitar. She said:

On Joan's advice for the guitar: "She was always telling me to connect like it’s coming through you. And considering your guitar is like right here (points to midsection), it really is a weird center - like - the only way I can describe it, and I’ve said it before - she literally sort of told me. . . Why am I doing this right now? . . . The only way I can describe it, and the way she told me to play like her, and it's the only way that feels right is like, ‘You have to f-ck your guitar.’ I didn't know how else to say that, I’m sorry!"
On working with friends: "It’s a weird thing. It’s rare that you get to work with your friends, and it’s rare that you meet your friends - well, you make a lot of friends on set too."
On Cherie and Joan's friendship and that notorious kissing scene: "It was such a unique friendship, and they rely on each other so strongly. You add a kiss to something and suddenly it’s like, “Oh. My. God. They love each other and they are lesbians!” Like, what?! We got to see them interact now, and seeing them together was really helpful. They turn into the same people they were back when they hung out all the time. So it’s cool, they still really love each other. It’s hard to describe - they’re just really close. They’re really close and they kissed one night."

On the pressure to get the story right: "If we didn’t tell this story right, this would have been the version of The Runaways that people my age would know about. That thought before the movie was over, it drove me crazy. The shoot was very fast, and it was sort of a mad scramble to get everything. Working with Floria was great, because we really had a lot of room to do, and be and live. But at the same time, when you care about something so much, it is scary. She’s a first time director, and I love her music videos. I love the movie, I’m so proud of her, and I’m so proud of everyone involved. This is a different experience - because usually, if the movie’s not good and it doesn’t turn out the way you thought it would, that’s just the way it goes, whatever. But with this, we didn’t have any other option. The guilt that I would have harbored for the rest of my life would have turned my stomach black."
Kristen on Joan Jett: “She’s incredibly proud to be who she is. I’ve never seen anyone who’s completely, innocently confident the way she is. She doesn’t even realize that other people may not be like that. It’s not overcompensation, it’s not like she’s trying to be a certain way.”
On if the film's empowerment themes helped her realize anything about overcoming insecurities: "Everyone has them, so don’t worry about it. I don’t know what to say either - I feel really bad for people who are like 13, or 14. I’m sorry, you’re going to get older! I don’t handle my insecurities very well. So, don’t worry about it - you’ll be fine."
On Joan's guitar playing: "She’s got a really unique connection to the music, the way it just comes out of her - the compulsion to make it, to create the sound, it isn’t something that all musicians have. The fact that she never started playing lead guitar... She wanted to play rhythm guitar, she wanted keep the music going, she needs it."

Dakota and Kristen Talk Friendship and Fashion at the NYC Runaways Premiere

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning caused minor pandemonium last night when they arrived at NYC's Landmark Sunshine theater for their NYC premiere of The Runaways, presented by Tommy Hilfiger and Quintessentially. We had a first look at Kristen showing some leg in her Pucci minidress, and Dakota also looked great in her Valentino. We caught up with Dakota at Tuesday's press junket, where she opened up about the process of channeling Cherie Currie. Yesterday, she was happy to talk about all the fun she and her female costars had on set and said Kristen's become "one of my best friends." Kristen, meanwhile, revealed she occasionally gets tired of all the prep it takes to get ready for events. She also weighed in on the Breaking Dawn director drama and said she's excited to see who they pick, and once press for this film has wrapped, she actually has a vacation coming! Robert Pattinson Bites His Tongue & Beams at The Daily Show

Robert Pattinson finished up his short Remember Me promotional visit to the US with another day in New York City at a press junket and later making an appearance on The Daily Show, where he poked his tongue out and smiled at fans. On Monday we saw him doing more TV promo and attending the premiere alongside Kristen Stewart, who caught a flight out of New York yesterday. Robert also headed to JFK late last night to return to London where he's shooting Bel Ami. We'll be glad to have him back in the UK!

Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, and Helena Bonham Carter Arrive For Alice in Wonderland Royal Premiere!

Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, and Helena Bonham Carter put on their best for today's Royal World Premiere of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland in London. The stars of the film greeted the crowd and signed autographs as it all streamed live for fans around the world. While the movie may appear a bit dark for young kids, Johnny assured the press that his little ones already saw it, saying, "My kids actually saw the film because I send them out there in the frontlines. They saw it – and they loved it . . . They absolutely adored it. They loved every character. They weren't freaked out by it whatsoever." The cast got the fun started in LA last weekend with a press junket and a fan event as they start bringing the highly-anticipated movie around the world. Pretty soon, however, Johnny will have to report to work in Paris where his costar in The Tourist, Angelina Jolie, has been filming all week.

Watch Ben Affleck's Sundance Red Carpet and Plans to Teams Up With Damon Again!
