Only three days until Valentine's Day, which means we can soon put materialistic expressions of love behind us. But you can't really grasp the extent of Valentine's Day consumerism until you check out some of the more crazy creations out there on the market. I found 10 silly presents and I want you to tell me if they would make you laugh or cry if you received them this Sunday.

Local San Francisco gardening powerhouse Flora Grubb, whose San Francisco garden shop is chock-full of amazing plant installations, has some really fun, unusual offerings for Valentine's Day presents in her web shop.
My personal favorite is this hanging plant display, Little Heart Shaped World ($20). Only four inches square, it's nearly small enough to fit around your neck as an avant-garde pendant!

They might be cliché (and red and pink do clash) but I think traditional Valentine's Day gifts have their advantages. Going classic takes away the pressure to come up with something magical or spontaneous, while sending the message that you're making an effort. And it's hard to hate on chocolate!

When it comes to gift giving, I pride myself in picking practical and thoughtful gifts that are in an appropriate price range and generally pay little attention to how much I think someone will spend on me unless there's a spending cap.
However, I have a dear friend who plans her Christmas gifts for her siblings based on what she thinks they will spend on her. This year she shared that she gives her fancy-pants brother pricier gifts because she knows he will fork out more on her and spends less on her brother who gives less decadent presents.

There's an interesting article about the protocol of party wine in the December issue of Food & Wine. Lettie Teague discusses how hard it is to find the perfect bottle.
She also talks about the different kinds of wine gifters: those who prefer that the wine be opened at the event and those who wish it to be enjoyed by the host at a later date.

This holiday season we're hoping that you're taking our suggestions for giving back by donating used sports gear or giving blood. Another way to help is by donating money to a worthy cause — I know a few people who give money to a charity on friends' behalf instead of buying gifts. If you're afraid of showing up empty handed, don't worry.
