Fred "Forever Kevin Arnold to Me" Savage Lands Lead in Another TV Show

Just as Jared Padalecki will probably always be Dean from Gilmore Girls in my mind, I can't look at Fred Savage without thinking of that baby-faced kid coming of age during the '60s and '70s on Wonder Years. But even fresh-faced little boys grow up, and Savage continues to seek out non-Kevin Arnold-related work as he gets older.

Just today it was announced that Savage will play the lead role in a CBS comedy pilot by Family Guy writer/producer Ricky Blitt.

Within the pilot description lies a clue to my real-or-fake TV pilot quiz from earlier today, so to get the info on this definitely real pilot, read more.

Savage will play the lead role in Single White Millionaire, a "comedy about an unassuming millionaire (Savage) in his 30s who is ready to settle down."

Fred Savage Excited For Second Child

Fred Savage, the actor that we fell in love with as Kevin Arnold and his real life Winnie Cooper, wife Jennifer Stone are in the midst of their own wonder years getting ready for baby number two. The couple that married in 2004 already have one-year-old son, Oliver.

According to a People Magazine article:

"We're due in May," Savage revealed, but Stone said the baby's name and sex are going to be a surprise.

Before reality television and trashy prime-time teen dramas, there was "The Wonder Years." Who could resist watching awkward little Kevin pine after Winnie, his chubby-cheeked object of affection? (All together now: "Awww...") But despite tuning in every week, I never noticed the scarcity of dialogue on the show. I guess Kevin was even more awkward than we originally thought! Just watch.

Five Questions With Charlie Day

I am continuously amused by the FX comedy series It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The writers and actors on that show are either utterly fearless or just don't care about remaining within politically correct boundaries - to uncomfortable and hilarious results.

I recently got to talk with Charlie Day, one of the creators/writers/stars of Always Sunny and picked his brain a bit about the series, his director Fred Savage, and his wife - who plays the waitress Charlie is obsessed with on the show.

How much of the show is scripted and how much is improvised? It seems like a lot of it is ad libbed.
I think the ad-libbing style and the feel both come from the way we acted on the set and also from the style of acting that we have adopted for this particular show. But we actually heavily script every episode. Once we feel comfortable with a take or two, we will start to get a little bit looser with the dialogue and deconstruct a little bit of what we wrote to see if there are different and funnier ways to say what we’d written. I would say at the end of day, about 20% stays in and the rest of it is the scripted version of the show.

But I think what is adding to the improv feel is the fact that we talk over each other a lot. We shoot with two cameras going constantly, so you can cut from one side to the other, and that overlapping isn’t a problem.

How much are you like your character Charlie?
I’d like to think I am not like him at all, but I think, sadly, I’m more like him than I care to be. It’s funny, I really never thought the show would go this far, because it was a home video. I figured, Charlie is such a good name for the character, let’s stick with it.

How much am I like him? Well, I have never gotten drunk and refereed a basketball game, but I have gotten drunk and I have played basketball, so there you go.

Your wife, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, plays the waitress on the show. What’s it like working with her knowing how much her character loathes Charlie?
It’s always great working with Mary Elizabeth. We actually have a great working relationship. Oftentimes, I think we joke around at home in various characters, or in the characters of the show. For us it’s very enjoyable and it’s easy for me to pine after her. I don’t know why it’s so easy for her to dislike me so much, but I think it’s pretty enjoyable for both of us.

There is a video online in which we learn there’s something in your contract as actors, you have to service Danny DeVito, which is highly amusing. Was that just something you guys wanted to do, or was it to get more buzz online for the show? And will we see more of that stuff in the future?
Without a doubt, it was to get more buzz for the show. FX said to us, "Do you think you guys could come up with anything like those 'Dick in the Box' things that get six million hits on YouTube?" I think, because we didn’t have Justin Timberlake and we weren’t airing it first on Saturday Night Live, the answer was "no."

That video goes back to what we used to do, which is there was no crew. It was a lot of fun. We came up with the concept of Danny’s contract and Danny and Rhea and Fred Savage were all up for the joke. Fred Savage is the best part about it. I think in the future, we’ll definitely do more, whether they’re for Sunny, or just for our own amusement.

Do you think Fred Savage will ever make an appearance on the show itself, or will he remain behind the cameras?
I am begging him to make an appearance on the show. Not only is Fred a very talented actor and a very funny guy, he’s really a great director and he helped us a lot. Obviously, I have been a fan of him since he was a kid, and he is a really strong, funny actor. If he ever wants to do anything in front of the camera for us, we’ll be lucky to have him and I know our fans will love it, too.

Announcing the 2008 Independent Spirit Awards Nominees

Last year it was all Sunshine all the time when Little Miss Sunshine took home the majority of the Independent Spirit Awards, given out yearly by Film Independent. This year, the nominations are dominated by Juno, the teen pregnancy dramedy opening December 14, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and to a lesser degree I'm Not There.

Some of the nominations have me squealing with delight: Chiwetel Ejiofor nominated for Best Supporting Male for his outstanding performance in Talk to Me, Julie Delpy's 2 Days in Paris nominated for Best First Feature, and the Irish musical Once nominated for Best Foreign Film. Yet then there's the heartbreaking nomination of Waitress for Best Screenplay, which (if it wins) would have been given to Adrienne Shelly had she not tragically died last year.

Thanks to all of you who chimed in with suggestions for The Wonder Years, which is a challenging one due to all the young characters. I really like the ideas for Winnie Cooper, including Whip's suggestion of Selena Gomez, and agree I with arienne that Madeline Zima would have been perfect if she were a tad younger.

And then of course there's the all-important Kevin Arnold to recast (it's so hard to think of anyone but Fred Savage in that role!). Nick Jonas, as leeluvfashion suggests, definitely has the right hair for the period and there were several suggestions for Michael Cera which is actually right on in terms of little Kev's neurotic nature.

But as you know, I could only choose one and the winning recast's suggestions for Winnie and Paul totally won me over. Congratulations johnsonkm20!

Recast The Wonder Years and Win a Prize!

Every other Wednesday on BuzzSugar, I post a Recast challenge, where I ask you to choose new actors for a classic TV show or movie. The reader who submits the best cast wins a BuzzSugar t-shirt!

Last week there was news that NBC has ordered a pilot by the writer of The Wonder Years that will be similar in tone to the classic dramatic series, except it'll take place in the '80s. So even though it's not a remake, I thought it would be fun to recast Kevin Arnold and gang anyway! I loved this show set in the late '60s/early '70s, and the first few lines of the opening credits song still give me goosebumps.

So, who could possibly play Kevin Arnold, the tween at the heart of the show? What about his nerdy, loyal friend Paul, and his childhood crush (whose hair I wanted so badly!) Gwendolyn "Winnie" Cooper?

Let's also recast the rest of the Arnold family: Kevin's dad Jack (played with perfect moodiness by Dan Lauria), stay-at-home mom Norma, Kevin's free-spirited sister Karen, and big brother from hell, Wayne. And for kicks, who could play Mr. Cantwell, the junior high school science teacher, famously portrayed by Ben Stein?

Buzz In: Which Former Teen Idols Would You Put on VH1?

It's a weird world where Scott Baio can become a programming tycoon, but I guess that's what two successful "celebreality" shows can do these days. Following the success of Scott Baio is 45 . . . And Single and Scott Baio is 46 . . . And Pregnant, Baio is launching a reality show that aims to do for others what VH1 did for him.

Here's the idea: Eight teen idols from the '80s and '90s, all guys, will live in a house together and reflect on the best and worst parts of their short-lived fame. With help from life coaches and experts in the entertainment industry, they'll come to a decision by the end of the show: either pursue fame again, or promise to stay far away from Hollywood for good.

So now, here's the key question: Which eight male former heartthrobs would you want to see in the house? Frankly, after The Two Coreys, I would veto both Haim and Feldman. But an appearance by Kirk Cameron could be great, if only because I'd love to see what he's saying these days. Fred Savage might be doing too well to qualify, but what about Corin "Corky" Nemec of Parker Lewis Can't Lose?
