After much speculation, the new tweenage Dora the Explorer was unveiled this week. Some mothers breathed a sigh of relief when they saw that the long haired, leggy character was not quite as mature as some had feared, and Mattel assured them that she will remain the same wholesome girl their daughters have grown to love. Dora is not the first children's character to mature right before our eyes.

Yesterday we showed you the top five trends from Toy Fair, but amid the great Eco-conscience toys and educational games, there were a number of items that kept us laughing throughout the day. Dora the Explorer has a "bad seed" in the fam and her name is Maraka. Girlfriend is a Spanglish-speaking, foul-mouthed little spitfire who engages in Dora's signature question-and-pause-pause-pause-for-answer games. But Maraka's questions are different from Dora's.

Heidi Klum went all out for her 10th annual Halloween party at Voyeur in LA on Saturday. She and Seal looked amazing as they arrived dressed as black crows just weeks after welcoming their new daughter Lou. Heidi's party is always huge and she revealed that the elaborate costume planning starts every year in July.

As if we didn't already know this... a new study out reveals that all of the commercials that bombard wee ones during Saturday morning cartoons are marketing the least healthy food options for youngsters. In between Imagination Movers and Dora the Explorer, tiny viewers are likely to see an advertisement for Lucky Charms, Coco Puffs, and loads of other sugar loaded cereals.

Did you know that cartoon character Dora the Explorer has a fragrance of the same name? Don't forget Strawberry Shortcake. She, too, has her own blend, aptly named Strawberry Shortcake Perfume ($15).

The other day a friend who works in book publishing put this up as his Facebook status: "'Blistering sexuality' — This is a quote on the back cover of a book I'm working on, and one of the many reasons I want to work in children's books." Ha! Yes, "blistering" and "sexuality" side by side would send me running to Dora's G-rated explorations.

I know a very smart, independent, tomboyish 5-year-old who is enthralled by the idea of being a princess. It was Fiona from the Shrek films that got her hooked.
Girls have always loved playing with dolls and pretending they're princesses, but it appears to be crammed down their throats even more now by toy manufacturers and movie studios.
