I Don't Buy It: Special Detergent For Your Fitness Clothes?

Of course, I think it is imperative to wash your fitness gear after every workout, but come on - do you expect me to believe that I need special soap to do it? This Sport-Wash ($10) says you should use this instead of regular detergent to "keep the high-tech in your high-tech fabrics so your workout wear will continue to look good and perform its best." This soap claims that it "leaves no residue to interfere with moisture control, breathability, water-repellency or insulation. It even restores factory-applied waterproofing." Is it me or do you agree that this is a total scam? Now I know workout gear can start to stink after a while, and detergent that gets the funk out is a necessity for some clothes, so that I'm down with. As for this Sport-Wash, I think it's a waste of money because if the fabric itself can't withstand washing in regular detergent, then chances are the gear isn't going to last very long anyhow. What do you think?

Lil Tip: Wash Up For Baby

Your shower has come and gone, and your due date is quickly approaching. Instead of just sitting around and waiting for baby, make sure all of those little onesies and sheets are ready for their sweet skin. Babies can be prone to eczema, atopic dermatitis and allergies so it's important to treat their clothes with a different kind of detergent than you would normally use.

All Free and Clear is free of dyes and fragrances, which help to protect your lil one's precious body. Dreft and Method Baby are popular detergent choices for moms, too. They are dye free, but both contain small amounts of fragrance, which I personally love.

Here is a list of things to wash:

All of Baby's clothes
Towels and washcloths
Bibs and burp cloths
Bedding sheets, blankets, bumper, pillows
You might want to wash some of your shirts, too

Also, steer clear of the fabric softening liquids and dryer sheets. They can
cause flame retardant clothes to lose their effectiveness.

Get to throwing those loads in the washer. As for folding, you're on your own!

Wash Up: Pet Safe Laundry Detergents

I know with as many germs, bacteria, and just plain nasty things out there in the city, North is more susceptible to picking them up since his snout is always on the lookout for something gross to sniff. Plus, all four of his paws are on the ground and he isn't in the habit of wearing booties (except for when we took on the icy NYC Winter streets) to protect him from picking up germs. I can only imagine how dirty his bedding, clothes (if he wore them for more than two seconds before trying to paw them off), and toys could get if I didn't wash them as often as I do!

Since Nature's Miracle was my BFF when I was potty training North back in the day – its stain and odor remover was truly a miracle before he got the hang of going in nature – I fully entrust Nature's Miracle Laundry Detergent for his bedding and toys. It's pet safe (obvs) and you don't even have to use a ton of it to get your pet's grimy toys squeaky clean. If you're not into store-bought detergents, you can always get into the DIY spirit and make your own at home and it works just as well. Granted, a typical house kitty probably doesn't need a clean up as often as your outdoor loving pooch, washing all bedding and toys can stave off illness and keep your home smelling fresh.

Review: Get the Funk Out With Win Sport Detergent

Have you ever noticed that even after washing your workout gear in hot water, after a few sweaty workouts, a musty odor can inevitably develop. This odor is caused by bacteria attracted to sweat soaked fabric. A new sport detergent, Win ($13.99 for two 21 oz. bottles), which claims to take care of smelly gym clothes, works like this:

This powerful oxy cleaning technology eliminates the embedded sweat molecules and odors that overwhelm the fabric. Simultaneously, these same ingredients also react with soil and organic materials causing them to either decolorize or disintegrate. Once in a soluble form after oxidization, dirt and odors easily wash away.

Interesting, right? I tried it out recently so to see what I thought, just read more.

Win does have a nice fragrance and it left my not so fresh gym clothes feeling fresh, especially when I was wearing them the next day at the gym, which is when I usually start to think it's time to replace the old tank top. My only issue with it is that I typically wash my gym clothes with the rest of my laundry. To do a separate load on top of my whites, mediums and colors was a bit cumbersome and not something I realistically see happening all that frequently. However if you simply can't get the funk out of your old gym clothes, then it's definitely worth the extra load - I threw in some old rags and questionable socks to knock some more things out. Did You Wash All of Your Baby's Belongings?

Motherhood and all the dirty wash that comes with it have made me long for a house with a laundry room! But, back in my pre-baby days, tossing stuff in the washer and dryer was more of a twice-weekly occurrence. Though lots of mamas-to-be clean all of their impending baby's belongings before their first wear, I must confess I never did. And, my kids never had any skin issues or irritations to show for it. Once they wore or used an item, I did launder it with a non-toxic detergent specifically for babies. Did you clean before or after?

Sometimes the fresh scents and soap suds from baby detergents just don't do the job. When my baby girl had the tummy bug and threw up on her crib sheets, I resorted to an old family trick to rid her linens of the odor.

During the laundry's spin cycle, add one cup of white distilled vinegar. It will break down the smelly substance and soapy residue leaving the wash fresh and clean.

Help Clothes Keep Their Shape

I'm very intrigued by this new detergent called Cheer True Fit, which claims to help your clothes keep their shape. Having had to say goodbye to a fair share of overstretched jeans and misshapen t-shirts, I definitely see a high demand for this product. According to the Cheer web site, the detergent works using a friction-reducing lubricant, so that the fibers of your clothes glide against each other during washing. (As an added bonus, the new brand is also holding a sweepstakes to win a New York shopping spree.)

I plan to try this stuff just as soon as I finish my current jug of detergent, but if anyone has tried it, tell me what you think.

Can This Laundry Detergent Make Your Skin Softer?

Just when I thought beauty products couldn't get any more unusual, out comes Borba Fabric Fusion 2-in-1 Eco-Laundry Wash. The green-leaning detergent is free of petrochemicals, which should satisfy the ecologically minded; as a regular user of Nancy Boy eco laundry soap, I can say that gentler laundry detergents work well. What's unusual about Borba's version, however, is that it claims to "help skin feel softer and healthier" through its incorporation of pansy extracts, sea moss, and glycerin. Additionally, it promises to rehydrate dry skin and provide free radical protection. I haven't tried it - and because it costs $25 plus $8 shipping, I am unlikely to - but I have a hard time believing that a laundry soap can do all of that. Your thoughts?
