Kelly Ripa Talks Motherhood and "Me" Time

Kelly Ripa's a lil bombshell. The funny lady juggles hosting a TV show, her family of five, and still finds time for charity events, commercials, and magazine covers. This month, her piercing blue eyes grace the cover of First. In the accompanying interview the woman who seems to have it all talked about motherhood and needing "me" time.

On the importance of spending time alone: "I try to run everyday in the park. It's crucial to know who you are and how you feel. I find that I'm a better wife and mom if I take a half hour for myself every day. It can feel selfish, but it makes a big difference. If you don't do it, you'll feel overwhelmed and resentful. You want people to feel they can count on you. I feel they can when I take care of myself."

On her traditional family life: "Marriage and having kids really agrees with us. Mark helps with homework, while I'll do a baking project for school. We look at each other and think, if our friends could see us
now, they wouldn't believe what we've become! We really enjoy what our life has developed into. I try to do it all, and I don't do any of it particularly well. But at least I try. Sometimes the cookies get burnt, but what are you going to do?"

Remembering her well-rounded upbringing: "My mother was way ahead of herself in terms of creative expression. Mom thought it was important for us to have music and dance lessons. There were times when I told her that I wasn't going to have time to do all my homework, and she would say, 'Well, I think it's more important that you're well-rounded.' She definitely struck the right balance."

Taking a night out for herself: "During the summer, we do a once-a-month girls' night out. We'll meet for coffee or go to the beach together with the kids. Our husbands are always like, 'Why can't we join you?' I'm like, 'Um, it's called girls' night out. Why don't you have your own night out?' "

Tips For Tackling Your First Marathon

Back in January, many of you wrote that running in longer races was one of your fitness goals in our Get Fit For 2010 community group and contest. Hopefully you signed up for a race, and are steadily training and staying injury free. The magazine Outside shared some training tips for newbie marathoners, and I'm going to share them with you.

First things first, the magazine suggest you "go for a run." Easy to do. Lace up your sneaks and go. Check!
The second suggestion is the same as the first. Endurance, like Rome, isn't built in a day.
Now "hit the brakes," says Outside: "If running feels hard, you're going too fast." Going slow helps avoid injuries.

What Was Your Baby's First Food?

Most moms assume that their baby's first taste of real food will be cereal once the pediatrician gives the go ahead, but in my experience this hasn't been the case. And the food wasn't an organic fruit or vegetable puree either.

The other night, my kids made chocolate chip cookies, and my 3-year-old took a warm one into the living room to eat. A few minutes after my son had finished his cookie, I noticed my baby was practically sucking the skin off of his fingers and had chocolate smeared across his mouth. Somehow while the two played, a piece of melted chocolate had exchanged hands and my 4-month-old was loving and licking every bit of it. I don't think this is all too uncommon since my daughter's first taste was tiramisu a friend gave her a taste of at a bridal shower, and my older son's was a lick of my daughter's lollipop. What was your child's first taste?

When Did You First Visit Disney?

With schools' rolling spring breaks in full swing many families' thoughts turn to the magical world of Disney. Whether it be frolicking with the princesses, riding It's a Small World or taking pictures with Mickey and his pals, the Disney theme parks have caught the attention of youngsters and their parents for generations.

But with single day ticket prices costing as much as $68 per child – and that doesn't even include transportation to the parks and accommodations once you arrive – a trip to the land of the Mouse is hardly an inexpensive one. Given the costs, many families hold off on visiting the wonderlands until their children are old enough to enjoy the whole park, while others plan a trip as soon as their tots can utter the characters' names.
