Steering Clear of Sexual Predators on Halloween

Halloween is supposed to be a spooky fun holiday for kids to indulge in freaky activities and gather sugary goodies. The fright night gives parents enough issues to fret about - fire hazards, getting lost, candy and street safety to name a few. I'm also concerned about predators. It's the perfect time for offenders to steal a glance at unsuspecting children.

Some states require registered sex offenders turn off their porch lights and place a sign in the window saying, "No candy or treats at this residence." To trick-or-treat on the safe side, I looked up the homes of registered sex offenders on Family Watchdog. Just type in the zip code where you plan on trick-or-treating and see which houses your family should avoid.

Did (or Does) Your Whole Family Watch TV Together?

Recently, a bunch of TV executives tackled the question of whether TV needs to have a "family hour" - and, for the most part, decided that such a thing is a relic of the past. Some said developing shows like The Cosby Show is just unrealistic in this era, especially because parents and kids might watch TV in radically different ways.

That got me thinking about shows I used to watch with my family when I was younger. Though watchdog groups like to protest it, The Simpsons was generally fair game for everyone in my house, and I also remember curling up on the couch to watch Family Double Dare.

What about you? As a kid, did you watch any shows with your parents and/or siblings? And, if you're a parent now, does your whole family watch anything together?

How Would You React If a Child Murderer Moved to Your Town?

Lots of parents search family watchdog sites to see if there are any predators in their community, but residents of a New Hampshire town were made well aware of the fact that a convicted child killer was settling on their soil. Parents in Chichester were outraged when a pastor in their community opened up his home to Raymond Guay who served 35 years in prison for multiple crimes. The New York Times report said:

Mr. Guay was convicted of killing a 12-year-old boy in Hollis, N.H., in 1973, chasing him into the woods before shooting him in the eye. After escaping from a state prison in 1982, he held two residents of nearby Concord hostage in their home. He was later sent to a federal prison in California, where he got in more trouble for stabbing an inmate in 1990.

Fearing for their safety, members of the community have invested in pricey home alarms and firearms despite an increase of police patrols.
