Lil Tip: On-the-Spot Tot Entertainment

It's amazing what moms invent when we're standing in line with a fussy lil one at the grocery store or passing time in a waiting room at the doctor's office. I've invented a few foolproof ways to distract my two-year-old for at least a couple of minutes each. Try out these tricks on your own tot.

Hand Crocodile: If you've got a pen in your purse, your swamp creature will look even more authentic with a few doodled-in features. Purse your fingers together and flip the side of your hand toward your child pretending that your knuckle is the eye, and the line of your finger and thumb is the croc's incredibly powerful jaw.
Mr. Two: Mr. Two, the finger man, was invented when I tried to show my son how to create his age using his fingers. I form a Mr. Two, and then he follows suit and the two-hand people play all sorts of games. From going on hikes (on the back of waiting room chairs) or playing hide and seek (between the pages of magazines), they are always up for an adventure.
Zipper Train: My lil guy is a train enthusiast and noticed that the zipper of a hoodie resembles a track. So he zips it up and down pretending it's a train choo chooing down the railroad.

Susan Boyle: Never Been Kissed . . .

. . . but touched by the singing angels. When Britain's Got Talent contestant Susan Boyle of Blackburn, Scotland, recently sauntered onto the stage in front of the terrifying panel of judges and the snarky-faced audience, she looked like someone's cute but dowdy aunt.

It didn't help the audience's perception of her that underneath her name were two words that together painted a grim picture of her life: 47, unemployed. (Why not add "spinster" while you're at it, guys?)

But Susan's transporting voice stunned even the usually poker-faced Simon, and the other judge, Piers, was visibly choking up and beaming from her heavenly voice. As for the skeptical audience? They could not stop roaring with approval. It turns out that Susan, who admitted backstage before her performance that she'd never been kissed, had dedicated the performance to her mother who recently died. Kiddie Soiree: Bozo Gets Clowned

I think it's creepy when horror movies incorporate circus music and clown images into their scary scenes. Though I don't mind clowns, I've seen a fair share of kids freak out the second they saw Bozo.

So it's not too surprising that the Nursing Standard magazine reports that children are afraid of clowns.

Researchers from the University of Sheffield asked 250 children ages four through 16 whether they liked the use of clowns. All of them said they found clowns scary.

Penny Curtis, a senior lecturer in research at the university said,

"We found that clowns are universally disliked by children. Some found them quite frightening and unknowable."

So before you book entertainment for your babe's next birthday, you might think twice about the options.

Life Fitness = iPod + Working Out

Makers of commercial grade exercise equipment, Life Fitness wants you to forget about Nike + iPod. They want to make iPod synonymous with working out on their machines.

Life Fitness announced that their new line of equipment would feature built-in iPod integration, allowing exercisers to plug their iPods into the equipment and view play lists or videos on the large equipment LCD screen while working out.

Hopefully by combining entertainment and exercise it will motivate folks to jump on the treadmill who would otherwise be bored by going for a run. Now you'll have the freedom to watch your own media on your individual workout screen wherever you want, and not be stuck watching the gym's TV.

The equipment will also allow you to view and control your play lists from the console, as well as charge your iPod. The new line is expected to be available in March, so get ready. I can't wait to see what it looks like and get all the details - like will I still be able to see my heart rate and watch a movie at the same time?

Let a Real Housewife Throw You a Healthy Party

Before the claws come out on the season premiere of Real Housewives of New York this week, Bethenny Frankel plays ladylike in the latest issue of Shape, and shares with readers her top 10 tips for healthy entertaining. "Hosting a party doesn't have to take a toll on your waistline or well-being," says Bethenny, who is six months pregnant. She should know - Bethenny, a private chef, is the author of Naturally Thin and The SkinnyGirl Dish. She's made a career at putting healthy twists onto party foods and cocktails.

Create a signature cocktail. Bethenny says keep calories down by mixing up a batch of your signature cocktail ahead of time. That way people are not mixing with abandon at your soiree. Stick to clear liquors and use lots of ice, club soda, and keep the juice to a minimum. Try adding some vodka to our recipe for this nonalcoholic ginger pineapple punch.
Load up on veggies. Veggies are a great way to add fiber and important antioxidants to any dish, and they help people feel full faster. "I layer red and yellow sauteed peppers on my cheese quesadillas, and blend chopped spinach, tomatoes, mashed peas, or fresh herbs into dips," says Bethenny.
Update old school favorites. Find a classic appetizer that people love and reinvent it with a healthy twist. Bethenny wraps scallops and shrimp in turkey bacon instead of the more traditional version that uses full-fat pork bacon.
Invest in upscale ingredients. Good quality ingredients usually taste better and have a more intense flavor. This is especially true of olives, cheeses, and cured meats. "Guests will feel satisfied with less."
Sneak in whole grains. Whenever you can, use whole grains - "If the topping tastes decadent, no one will feel cheated."
