Give your kids these books that will teach them all sorts of old tricks and get them off the couch. Boys can dive into Dangerous Book For Boys ($15) and girls can bury themselves in the Daring Book For Girls ($15).
The Dangerous Book For Boys by Conn and Hal Igguiden teaches young rascals how to tie knots, make paper airplanes, fish, craft bows and arrows out of front-yard tools, build a tree house, act out coin tricks, and assemble go-carts.

Vampires have long been a staple of romantic literature and movies, but with Twilight and True Blood, we're in the middle of a vampire sexual revolution.
In the latest issue of Nylon, True Blood star Stephen Moyer offers his theory as to why women are so drawn to vampires as sex symbols:
"The thing about vampirism is that it taps into a female point of view — you have an old-fashioned gentleman with manners who is a f*cking killer . .

Fox kicked off network Upfront week in New York this morning by announcing its Fall schedule, and here's a headline right off the bat: So You Think You Can Dance, Fox's summertime dance competition show, is getting a Fall edition as well.
The show will air in an American Idol-like fashion, with a two-hour performance show on Tuesdays and a one-hour results show on Wednesdays. That Wednesday show will lead into Glee, the musical dramedy that has its sneak peek after Idol this week.

Love for the sake of love is a story as old as the hills, but I couldn't help wondering if it might be a bit misplaced in our modern times as I watched the screen adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's popular young adult novel Twilight. In this story's world, if you're the first girl the gorgeous, brooding guy across the cafeteria is suddenly interested in, you've accomplished something worth celebrating. You should not ask why, and you should return his desire for you with a devotion so intense you're even willing to risk death.

The second season of HBO's True Blood kicks off tonight and doesn't waste any time jumping into the scary murder madness that has engulfed the citizens of Bon Temps.
According to the show's creator, Alan Ball, everything intensifies this season: vampires are more monstrous, sex scenes are even sexier, shape-shifters become more, er, shape-shiftery, and the anti-vampire movement becomes even more zealous.
Here are more highlights from the conference call Ball recently held with reporters:
- Talking about the serial killer: "The first season we, the audience, did not know who the serial killer was.

The CW wrapped up network Upfront week this morning by presenting its schedule for Fall 2009. And it's about what was expected, especially after the first photos leaked out yesterday: the three new series in the Fall lineup are Vampire Diaries, the Melrose Place reboot, and The Beautiful Life.
In terms of scheduling, Melrose will air on Tuesdays after 90210 (remake city!), while Beautiful Life gets the post-America's Next Top Model slot on Wednesdays (model city!).

This weekend, writer/director Alan Ball of Six Feet Under fame returns to HBO with True Blood. The vampire saga, based on the novels of Charlaine Harris, follows Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a waitress who can read minds — except for the one of Bill, a vampire who's new to town.
I've checked out the first two episodes of the show and will give you my reaction before Sunday's premiere.

Well, it was bound to happen eventually: The CW has ordered a drama pilot based on a series of vampire novels for teens that have enjoyed a resurgence thanks in part to the success of Twilight.
The Vampire Diaries novels — which were published by Alloy, the same company that brought Gossip Girl into the world — focus on a mortal named Elena, who was the girl who could have any boy she wanted until she met two vampire brothers. One brother, Stefan, is described as "brooding and mysterious" and capable of resisting Elena's charms, while Damon is dangerous, driven by a desire for revenge, and "would kill" to have Elena.
