What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. In addition to my selections below you can take home The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Tale of Despereaux, and Beverly Hills, 90210: Season 7.

Yes Man
I'm a little baffled as to why the DVD cover for Yes Man doesn't include Jim Carrey's costar, Zooey Deschanel. She's a major selling point for me! Anyway, this movie is actually pretty cute and a great choice if you're looking for some laid-back, feel-good entertainment at home.

The story follows divorced loan officer Carl (Carrey) who lives life turning down everything from invitations to parties to the loan requests he hears every day. One day Carl finds himself at a self-help-type meeting all about the power of saying "yes" to every opportunity and it completely turns his life around. While he's in the process of becoming a "yes man" he starts up a romance with the free-spirited Allison (Deschanel), and soon learns that there are some negatives to his new lifestyle.

Special features include "Downtime on the Set of Yes Man with Jim Carrey," and "Jim Carrey: Extreme Yes Man - The Outrageous Physical Stunts the Star Performs."

Doubt
If you're looking for some serious actors doing some serious work, look no further than Doubt. Adapted from a stage play, the movie follows Sister Aloysius (Meryl Streep), the principal of a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, who becomes suspicious of the parish priest (Philip Seymour Hoffman) when he takes a particular shine to one boy. Things get more complicated when a young nun named Sister James (Amy Adams) is pulled into the conflict and doesn't know who to believe. The movie also includes an excellent performance from Viola Davis.

Each main member of the ensemble cast - Streep, Seymour Hoffman, Adams, and Davis - earned an Oscar nomination for his/her work in this movie.

Special features include "Doubt: From Stage to Screen," "Scoring Doubt," and commentary with writer/director John Patrick Shanley.

Bedtime Stories
Directed by Hairspray's Adam Shankman, Bedtime Stories is about a handyman who tells his niece and nephew imaginative stories that start to come true. Whatever the kids come up with each evening he has to survive in real life, including a gumball rainstorm and being set on fire.

It's so cute-looking and I really like the idea of a kids' movie starring Adam Sandler. Keri Russell, Guy Pearce, and Russell Brand also pop up in the film.

Bonus features include deleted scenes and outtakes.

Sugar Bits - It's a Girl for Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck!

Box Office: Audiences Still Lovin' Marley

After breaking Christmastime records last week, audiences once again put the adorably naughty pup in the top spot at the box office over the weekend. Marley & Me, starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, earned an estimated $24 million "for a cume of $106.5 million in only 11 days."

In second place came Adam Sandler's Bedtime Stories followed by The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in third, Valkyrie in fourth and Yes Man in fifth.

Another unusually great weekend for the box office during the holiday season! What did you check out this first weekend of the new year?

Sugar Bits: Celeb BB Producers Anxious To Avoid Race Row

Stars going into the Celebrity Big Brother house have been coached to avoid a race row similar to the one that embroiled Jade Goody, Jo O'Meara and Danielle Lloyd during the last series. - Guardian
Yes Man, starring Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel, is number one in the UK box office. The film is based on the book by Danny Wallace. Bedtime Stories starring Adam Sandler and Russell Brand went in at number two, and Australia went into the chart at number three. - BBC

lil Big Screen: Bedtime Stories

I've been a sucker for Adam Sandler since Saturday Night Live, and even more so after he chatted up his daughters on Letterman, but it was my 4-year-old who practically dragged me to his latest flick, Bedtime Stories, after she saw it rained gumballs in the trailer.

Once we settled into our seats to watch the story of Skeeter Bronson (Adam Sandler), a hotel handy man who collaboratively tells imaginative tales with his niece and nephew that come true, I was enjoying the movie as much as my daughter. The four bedtime fantasies - Medieval, old West, ancient Greece, and outer space - are brought to life with the cast members playing roles in each tale. The result is a fantastical adventure filled with a mermaid, a red horse, chariot X-games and a booger monster that keeps kids sitting in their seats and adults engaged.

While the younger set is smitten with Bugsy, a pet guinea pig with unusually big eyes and a personality to match, the scenes between Skeeter and the children, Patrick (Jonathan Morgan Heit) and Bobbi (Laura Ann Kesling), are what pulls on a parent's heartstrings. When his uptight sister Wendy (Courteney Cox), goes to Arizona in search of a new job, the laid-back uncle who barely knows his charges steps in and becomes a goofy yet sincere hero of sorts to the kids who don't have a father figure. From allowing the children to eat their first burger to roasting marshmallows on the roof of the hotel, Skeeter forges a bond with the youngsters and wins over Jill (Keri Russell), Wendy's environmentally conscious friend, who helps with babysitting duties.

If you're looking for a whimsical family movie that will give you a chance to relax and laugh with your lil ones, Bedtime Stories is a must-see.

Box Office: Marley Chews Up the Competition

Oh, Marley, that insanely profitable little scamp! The cute dog movie had the best Christmas Day opening ever and grossed a total of $51.7 million over the four-day weekend. According to Variety, Marley & Me "played more to females, as well as to older moviegoers. Of Marley's aud, 64% were women, while 62% were over age 25." The grand success of Marley surprised some folks who thought the family flick Bedtime Stories would surely take the top spot at the box office.

In second place for the long weekend was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which just barely surpassed Bedtime Stories. Valkyrie won fourth place, followed by Yes Man at No. 5. The Spirit had a "soft debut" over the holiday weekend and came in at No. 9.

Compliments Keep on Coming for "Sweet Kid" Russell Brand

Russell Brand dressed in his usual all-black outfit and those Sass & Bide's Rat Leggings that he loves as he returned to his Hampstead home carrying a signed West Ham football and a copy of the Big Issue yesterday. It's been a tough few months for Russell, what with the Manuelgate scandal, but his pals across the pond have been publicly supporting him. Having been called an "angel" by Bedtime Stories director Adam Shankman, Russell's now been called "a sweet kid" by his costar Adam Sandler, who's been chatting with Radio One Newsbeat. Here are the highlights:

On Russell and Manuelgate: "I know he wishes that stuff never happened. He's a sweet kid and it's time to move on I think."
On producing Russell's next film: "That's why I'm saying, It's time to move on, so when I produce his next movie it makes more money!"

On whether he's responsible for Russell's Hollywood career: "Not at all. He would have done it and I'm just happy he's in the movie. All I did for Russell was tell people he's funny and that's about it. But people already knew that."

It's great to see Adam giving Russell so much love. If you've loved Russell this year you've still got time to vote for him as your favourite British male of 2008!

The Bedtime Stories Cast Brings Magic to LA

Keri Russell and Courteney Cox matched their black sashes but weren't accompanied by their husbands at the Bedtime Stories premiere in LA last night. Adam Sandler brought his wife, Jackie, who Keri recently thanked for helping cast her in the movie. Russell Brand stayed away from his costar and ex, Teresa Palmer, but did mention that he's hoping to share a New Year's kiss with a Jonas Brother. Sadie, Sunny, Coco, and River didn't come to this screening, but seeing mom or dad's movie should make for a special gift in addition to all of the other holiday season fun.

Keri Russell Limits Her Son's Gifts, Do You?

Keri Russell makes sure her lil guy River Deary knows the true meaning of Christmas. When asked about their plans, the Bedtime Stories star said:

We’re having all the parents at my house this Christmas and we told the grandparents, “No one go crazy. One gift for the kid,” which translates to like five. They don’t understand that. My gift is being home. It’s been so nice to be in our house in Brooklyn.
