Gear Review: Merrell Waterproof Hikers

If it takes more than a little snow or cold weather to keep you from hitting the trails, then have I got a shoe for you. Merrell sent me a pair of Siren Sport Gore-Tex XCR trail running/hiking shoes ($100), and my feet are in love. Not only are they adorable and sleek enough to wear with casual jeans (not bulky or manly looking), but these weatherproof sneaks also impressed me on the trails.

I wore these babies while walking on icy roads and hiking and running in woods with trails covered with a couple inches of snow. You can see from the photo that the soles are rugged and durable, so these shoes held up well on uneven terrain. They felt solid and safe on slippery surfaces too, but the best part - these trail runners kept me warm and dry, which is imperative when exercising in the cold. Another great feature is that these shoes have great arch support and the heel cups hugged the backs of my feet, so they felt comfortable yet sturdy.

The tongue is attached to the actual shoe, which keeps out snow, but it was a little bulky. I'd definitely recommend wearing a sock that's slightly cushioned so you don't get unnecessary rubbing on the top of your foot. Another thing I noticed is that the laces are really thin, and I expected them to be thicker. It makes the shoe look more feminine, but I worry about them breaking down the road. Not a biggie though, since laces can always be replaced.

Even though these shoes have performed amazingly in the cold weather, I'm looking forward to wearing these for Spring and Summer hikes as well. The Gore-Tex will keep my feet dry in case I slip into a stream or while trekking through mud, but the material is also breathable, so my feet won't get super sweaty. Plus they're unbelievably lightweight, so you practically forget you're wearing them. If you're not a fan of this tan/pink combo, they also come in light gray, dark tan, light tan/orange, and dark gray/blue.

Is It OK to Stock Up on Running Shoes?

I'm very particular about the type of shoes I choose to run in, so if they're ever (miraculously!) on sale, I'm always tempted to stock up on a few pairs. Similarly, if I see an older version of my shoes on a clearance rack, I want to grab them right away. But every time I think about it, I remember reading somewhere that running shoes start to age as soon as they're produced. You know you're supposed to replace your shoes every 350-500 miles, but is it possible that your shoes can also age if they're just sitting on a store shelf, or even in your closet?

I have no idea where I read or heard this sneaker tale, so to get to the bottom of this issue I called a friend at Jack Rabbit Sports, a favorite NYC running store, and a great resource for running information. While they were adamant about replacing shoes based on mileage and wear (yep, that 350-500 miles rule came up again), they see no problem with stocking up on your favorite pair of sneaks. In fact, according to Jack Rabbit, "Keeping a new pair of shoes in the box for a few months will not affect the performance of the shoes."

That is excellent news for me, and anyone else who loves a good deal. While it's important to make sure to choose the proper running shoe, once you've found a pair you're comfortable in, it's OK to grab a second (or third!) pair to stash in the closet. Just be sure to try each pair on, even if it's the exact same shoe, since the manufacturing process may cause slight differences in each pair produced.

We all know that black and dark grey are fashionistia favs. My really good friend, who happens to be a walking french fashion girl, swears by those colors.

Now we jump continents to Asia, good old China... dot dot dot then BAM we're in Beijing!" The colors are "shock!" black and dark grey!" Please keep in mind that this was noted by not one, but many of my friends coming from other cities. During our efforts to find some quality drinks and lounging, as we are the epitome of lounge wh*res... we finally end up in the smoky, laughter filled, semi-pretentious hipsterish and well-collared social scene that constitutes Enoteca's friday nights.

So topic turns to what exactly is fashion, what exactly has changed the city from being the rainbow sea of tight pant camel toe women to sullen colors of sophisication and design? We all agree that wine helps us think and that our brains come to a consensus within 10 minutes that education about style and awareness has finally penetrated this zany world full of carebears! Magazines, fashion shows, designers from outside of China, absportion of Western ideals are congealing a new world where fashion can take hold. Among the carebears, a platform has been built and people are gravitating towards it.

Current Trends:

Shoes - Sheepskin Boots, Lady Gaga Cloppers, Peter Pan Boots (fly awayyyy!)
Colors - Black, Grey, Color
Accessories - Rhinestones (as much as possible), grungy messenger bags
Clothing - leggings, big loose t-shirts (funky designs/colors), fur trimmed anything, cotton clothing, tight black jeans, modul jackets & dresses
Hair - Long or Medium straight loose

After that delightful agreement, we fall back in effortless mumbling about financial scenarios from today's foreign correspondents meeting.

Note: 3 guys and 1 girl discussing fashion and finance among wanna be hipsters - WHAT WERE WE THINKING!

We love fashion, we hate ugly rainbows and need some new things to chew on so please give us a topic to pick at. Yes, it is also true that we think 798 is commercial, but we still believe in fashion among the masses and can't wait till something truly amazing will kick us in the ass from the fashion world that is finally alive in China! We'll bite it right back, don't you worry!

Protect Your Peepers When on the Run

After a Winter of being cooped up indoors, daylight saving has arrived, the weather is warming up, and I can't wait to get outside for regular runs in the sunshine! But besides being dangerous for your skin, increased time in the sun can be bad for your eyes, too - UV exposure can lead to cataracts and glaucoma. I wear sunglasses while I'm walking to work or outdoors on the weekends, but I completely space when it comes to wearing them on a run. To tell the truth, I dislike wearing them when I'm out on a run - plus, a good pair can cost just as much as a good pair of running shoes! Besides, I wear contact lenses that advertise UV-A and UV-B protection, so I'm set, right?

Wrong. After a recent trip to the eye doctor, I found out my contacts aren't enough protection because they only protect the part of the eye they cover, leaving the rest exposed to the harmful rays. A closer look at my lenses' packaging revealed this:

"UV-absorbing contact lenses are NOT substitutes for protective UV-absorbing eyewear such as UV-absorbing goggles or sunglasses because they do not completely cover the eye and surrounding area."

I wear a hat when I run on super-bright days, but since sun still gets in my eyes, I figure it's not providing me with 100 percent protection. Aside from running in the dark (which isn't the safest option), it looks like I'm resigned to learning to deal with sunglasses. And if you have a suggestion for a great pair to try, let me know!
