National Federation for The Blind to protest Julianne Moore’s thriller ‘Blindness’

The National Federation for The Blind takes offense at the portrayal of blind people in the upcoming thriller Blindness, starring Julianne Moore and Marc Ruffalo. Blindness portrays a breakdown in society after a virus starts wiping out everyone’s vision, turning them into savages who compete for meager resources. Blind people think it’s outrageous that they’re portrayed so negatively and plan a protest of the film, which is out in limited release in the US this Friday, October 3.
Blind people quarantined in a mental asylum, attacking each other, soiling themselves, trading sex for food. For Marc Maurer, who’s blind, such a scenario _ as shown in the movie “Blindness” _ is not a clever allegory for a breakdown in society.

Instead, it’s an offensive and chilling depiction that Maurer fears could undermine efforts to integrate blind people into the mainstream.

“The movie portrays blind people as monsters, and I believe it to be a lie,” said Maurer, president of the Baltimore-based National Federation of the Blind. “Blindness doesn’t turn decent people into monsters.”

The organization plans to protest the movie, released by Miramax Films, at 75 theaters around the country when it’s released Friday. Blind people and their allies will hand out fliers and carry signs. Among the slogans: “I’m not an actor. But I play a blind person in real life.”

The movie reinforces inaccurate stereotypes, including that the blind cannot care for themselves and are perpetually disoriented, according to the NFB.

“We face a 70 percent unemployment rate and other social problems because people don’t think we can do anything, and this movie is not going to help _ at all,” said Christopher Danielsen, a spokesman for the organization.

Seven staff members of the National Federation for The Blind, including three people who are not blind, attended a screening of the film last week. They’re not simply responding to the trailers and have a legitimate beef with the film.

The film was not received well at Cannes, with the jury giving it a 1.3 average out of 4. Blindness has a 41% aggregate critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes and it seems like people either love it or hate it. It’s criticized as being too self-important and negative in tone. The film also features Danny Glover and Gael Garcia Bernal.

A Single Man: Beautiful and Flawed

Tom Ford's directorial debut, A Single Man, is reminiscent of one of the designer's Gucci suits: beautiful, expensive-looking, sumptuous - but lacking the impeccable tailoring that he's known for. However, it's a solid effort from Ford, who has gathered all the right elements, including a talented cast led by Colin Firth and Julianne Moore.

The film is set in 1960s LA, where college professor George (Firth) is grieving after losing his boyfriend of 16 years, Jim, to a car accident. Eight months after Jim's death, the movie depicts a day in George's life as he struggles to keep it together without his partner.

Ford is ambitious as a filmmaker, and I wouldn't expect anything less from him. It's clear that he wants A Single Man to succeed on all levels of cinema - performance, aesthetics, story. It's over-the-top though; too arty, too pretentious, too desperate to be rewarded (the dialogue-free trailer alone is reaching). But it's not bad for a first project, and there's a lot to appreciate, so to hear my thoughts on the film, just read more.

The two cornerstones of the film are the acting and the visual landscape. First, I'm a firm believer that Firth can do anything, as can Moore, who plays the eccentric friend in love with George. The film almost demands overacting from them, though; Firth shows grief in every scene, in every way imaginable, in every second of his day. He can handle it, but it's exhausting. And Moore is mostly just having fun with her narcissistic character, an alcoholic who has passed her prime. Showing more restraint is Matthew Goode as George's departed love. Seen in flashbacks, Jim and George's relationship is shown with quiet tenderness. It's a welcome reprieve from George's tortured expressions, and my favorite part of the movie.

The aesthetic value of A Single Man is its other cache, but like the acting, it often goes too far. Some actors are purely eye candy - not that that's a problem, but Ford gives you so many shots of the same sensual images, such as Nicholas Hoult's lips. Hoult (the boy from About a Boy, who is all grown up, to say the least) is a student with nebulous intentions, and the gratuitous lip-shots hit you over the head with the message that he's seductive. It's a technique Ford overuses; a drowning, naked Firth is constantly shown as a visual metaphor for George's grief. Ford is determined to make you recognize how beautiful his film looks, and for his next outing as director, I'd love to see some more subtlety.

Check out the latest Disney Dream Portrait entitled “Where Another World is Just a Wish Away,” which shows actress Julianne Moore, portraying Ariel from The Little Mermaid,” surrounded by other mermen and mermaids including Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, 22 (foreground).

“I leapt at the chance,” Julianne, 47, said. “Ariel is my daughter’s favorite princess, so I was just really so excited to do it. All the images I’ve seen that Annie’s shot so far - Cinderella and Alice and the prince one - are absolutely exquisite. They are so beautiful and so kind of wonderfully emotional. So I was really thrilled to be asked to work with her and do this.”

“Yes, Julianne has a big mermaid tail; it’s interesting,” photographer Anne Leibovitz recalled from the shoot. “Michael, too. His movements were so graceful and beautiful you just felt like you were watching a real merman.”

Julianne Moore slams celebrities who seek attention for their goodwill efforts

Julianne Moore has slammed Angelina Jolie and Madonna for deliberately seeking media attention for their humanitarian efforts.

Moore, 47, claims she has made a conscious effort to keep her own political and social activism out of the limelight, and she cannot understand why stars get so much attention from the press for volunteering their time to help others.

She says, “It’s definitely the ‘to whom much is given’ thing. And we have a tremendous amount of privilege. But, at the same time, I don’t know why so much emphasis is placed on celebrities who volunteer. Most people do things in their daily lives. It’s just normal.”

Moore currently sits on the board of pro-choice organization Planned Parenthood and works in support of Save the Children.

Julianne Moore's Valentines to Help Kids

Julianne Moore is seeing red – in the best way possible.

To help struggling kids, the 47-year-old actress and mother of two is promoting a line of Valentines featuring youngsters' artwork and benefiting the organization Save the Children.

The cards, available for printing or emailing, can be found on the charity's Web site through Feb. 14.

"It's just sort of a nice way to acknowledge kids who were struggling in America," Moore, mother to son Caleb, 9, and daughter Liv, 5, tells the Associated Press. "It's like kids loving kids."

Julianne Moore Fumes Over Spitzer 'Embarrassment'

New York Governor Elliot Spitzer apparently won't be getting off easy with his celebrity constituents.

"A f---ing embarrassment" is how Julianne Moore, once a fan of the former attorney general, termed the politico's involvement in a prostitution ring – for which it is anticipated he will resign on Wednesday.

"I'm really pissed," the fiery New Yorker, 47, told PEOPLE during Tuesday's TSE flagship SoHo store opening. "I honestly don't care where or how people have sex, or with whom, but prostitution is illegal. For someone whose got such a reputation for having a real attitude towards crime, you have to walk the walk. I'm sorry."

Meanwhile, TV hosts were more than happy to have a new political punching bag for their monologues. For instance:

• Stephen Colbert remained deadpan on his Comedy Central Colbert Report, saying of Spitzer, "I sat next to the guy three times and I didn't pick up on any of this, and I usually have excellent wh*re-dar."

• "They're talking about impeaching Eliot Spitzer if he doesn't step down," said Late Show's David Letterman, "and I'm thinking, 'Whoa, a Democrat being impeached for extramarital sex. Well, happy days are here again!' "

• Spitzer, who was accused of being Client 9 for the call-girl ring, was even topic one with Late Night host Conan O'Brien, who joked, "Not surprisingly, clients 1 through 8 were Charlie Sheen."

• Finally, The View co-host Joy Behar opined, "Aren't you sick of men? Viagra is destroying our government."
