Willie Aames is broke, on unemplyment and working construction jobs

Eight is Enough and Charles in Charge star Willie Aames, now 48, was a millionaire when he was in his 20s and partied at the Playboy mansion. He’s now struggling to make ends meet in his post-fame life in Kansas. He’s on unemployment, and takes day labor construction jobs when they’re available. Aames is married with an 18 year-old daughter, and the former child actor is now so broke he couldn’t even afford to buy his daughter a dress for the prom. A lot of his money troubles stem from a project he invested $150,000 in last year that fell through. His wife suffers from the auto-immune disease lupus, and her high medical bills and the cost of medication also contributed to the family’s debt. Like a lot of people struggling in today’s economy, Aames filed for bankruptcy, had his car repossessed and may lose his home.

Willie Aames… is now virtually penniless. He’s had his jeep repossessed, stands to lose his home and has filed for bankruptcy…

Willie is so down on his luck, he couldn’t even afford a present for his daughter Harleigh’s 18th birthday, he told The Enquirer in an exclusive interview.

“What’s worse is that she had to buy her own prom dress last year,” said Willie. “That killed me!”

Willie says the past 2 1/2 years have been “absolute hell” for him and his family. “There were times when we had so little money that we actually had to make a choice between groceries or medication for my wife Maylo, who has lupus.”

Willie took a big financial gamble by investing in a Canadian adventure and hunting TV show called “MacMillan River Adventures” on the Outdoor Channel last year, sinking $150,000 into the project. He lost every penny.

Willie, who played Tommy Bradford on “Eight is Enough,” then took out a second mortgage on his home but quickly fell behind on the payments. He said he was unemployed until his recent gig on “Celebrity Fit Club.” But he only earned $14,000 for his role.

So, the actor says he’s been taking day labor jobs to put food on the table.

“I’ve never shied away from an honest day’s work,” he maintained.

Willie did everything from hanging drywall, sanding ceilings and digging sump pumps.

“It wasn’t much money, but it’s what I had to do to feed my family,” he said.

[From The National Enquirer, print edition, August 18, 2008]

Aames says that Scott Baio was “set for life” after their show Charles in Charge wrapped, but that his money quickly dwindled down to nothing. He also was addicted to drugs and alcohol for 15 years, the Enquirer reports, and then got sober, became a born-again Christian and met his wife. Aames starred in the Bibleman videos as a Christian superhero from 1995 to 2004. He lost 19 pounds on Celebrity Fit Club in 2005, but has since gained the weight back. He lost the weight again on Celebrity Fit Club 6: Boot Camp earlier this year, where he won the individual prize.

About 1/2 of US bankruptcies are at least partially due to medical expenses, and the fact that Aames wife is probably too ill to work has surely affected his family’s finances. It’s a shame his adventure show didn’t work out, and it speaks to his character that he’s willing to do construction work and whatever it takes to help his family. I didn’t seem Aames on either Celebrity Fit Club, but Wikipedia makes it souund like he was particularly surly on the 2005 show and says he had a big fight with the trainer. Have any of you seen it and what impression did you get of Aames?

Aames told The Enquirer that his dream job is to work as a producer for Oprah. She might be interested in his story at least.

I hope things pick up for him and his family, and for a lot of Americans who have to make the difficult choice between food or medication, especially seniors.

Willie Aames is shown below in a still from Celebrity Fit Club 6: Boot Camp. Credit: tv.yahoo.com He is shown above with his wife in a promotional image for their joint book Grace is Enough which was published in late 2007 and details their separate lives struggling with childhood sexual abuse and drug addiction before they found each other and their faith.

Construction worker commits suicide at Mel Gibson’s house

This is a bizarre and sad story. A guy working on one of Mel Gibson’s homes hung himself. None of Mel’s family was living there, and it sounds like it was ruled a suicide:

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ a construction worker committed suicide at Mel Gibson’s house today.

It happened at Mel’s Agoura Hills home - near Malibu. The construction worker was 47-years-old. We’re told he hanged himself.

The Sheriff’s substation in Lost Hills took the call at 8:07 AM - that’s the same station where Mel was taken after his DUI arrest in 2006.

Mel was not at the house when the body was discovered. A law enforcement source says no one from Gibson’s family was living at the house - it is currently under heavy construction.

[From TMZ]

I hope this guy’s family can find some peace. At least there was no one living in the home, but can you imagine going back to a house where someone killed themselves? That sounds so selfish in a way, but that’s the type of situation where you feel creepy living there afterwards.

Santa Fe Home Construction as of 1/2009

Life for me has been incredibly crazy busy the past eight months or so, leaving me little time for Sugar or much of anything else. Like everyone and you Sugars, life sometimes gets in the way of doing some of the things we like to spend doing in our spare time.

I spent the majority of December traveling in Spain and France which was incredible. However, somewhere in Spain, I picked up the worst flu bug experiencing every ailment imaginable. By the time I landed in Paris, I was ready to speak in tongues but managed to forge ahead and then proceeded to crash and burn once I got home.

Now I've spent the last two weeks trying to catch up on work and get back into a regular routine. Last week, I headed to Santa Fe to make decisions on the house that I'm building. This home is turning out wonderfully. I'm so excited to have a beautiful retreat that is peaceful and is located in such incredible surroundings.

The home is a simple, traditional Northern New Mexico-style built in an L-shape with a pitched roof with dormers to expand the second floor loft space. The home consists of adobe bricks that were made from the dirt that was extracted from the site and is a green construction. It is an open space construction with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths with amazing views.

Many of you have asked about the process, so I thought I would take time to share these photos with you.

A view from the back of the house looking west at the Sangre de Cristo Mountains" title="A view from the back of the house looking west at the Sangre de Cristo Mountains" class="image preview" width="550" height="413">A view from the back of the house looking west at the Sangre de Cristo Mountains

Let's be constructive - new platform

Hey guys! I know everyone has very strong feelings about the new layout over on the main blogs. While there have been quite a few "I hate it so much" blogs in this group, I wanted to do things a little differently.

Here is a place to post CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM about the new platform.

For example, if there's a feature that's been left out that you loved/can't live without, comment about it here.

And if you just want to rant, post it in one of the other blogs, please.

Thanks everyone, and as I've been a member here for a while, I have noticed that the geeks and Team listen and help us out when possible. So it is not a waste of your time to post things that you miss/need/want.

May 2009 Santa Fe Home Construction

An outside view of my house looking north at the bottom edge of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains

I'm sitting here watching the final moments of the Blackhawks vs. Canucks game, which is going to be won by Chicago on this chilly Saturday night. Completely a surprise when the game seemed like the Canucks were in full control of the game, the 'Hawks woke up in the second period and seamlessly regained the stranglehold of the action. Looks like the score will end up 6-3; however, for my Canuck loving friends in the Sugar Hockey Group, there are more games to be played.

Therefore, I figured this would be a good time for me to post some of the latest pictures of my house which is slated to be completed in the next three to four weeks. This week the final finish on the inside plaster went on. I hear it looks beautiful, I can only imagine as I haven't seen any pictures yet. The color coat on the outside stucco went on and will be a golden/tanish Sahara color.

The view outside my front door with Lulu in the foreground!

The wood floors have yet to be laid and we will be putting various patterned Moroccan tiles on the risers of the stairs to add visual interest. Other architectural features of interest include the Egyptian Chandelier for the dining area, the two Moroccan lanterns that will be placed in the outside entryway portal and the inside entry area, and the antique door from India that will lead into the master bedroom. In various areas in the house, the builder has made nichos to place art and the stone hearth has been placed on the kiva fireplace. The front door has not be put on, but will be antiqued for a weathered look and instead of a doorbell, I have a Moroccan door knocker that will let me know when friends and family arrive! Actually, Monte and Lulu will let me know.

Living area, Kiva fireplace in the background

Note the finish coats on both the inside and outside had not been done when these photos were taken two weeks ago.

Egyptian Chandelier

Looking out from living area into front entry hall, note the nicho for art!

A view of the kitchen

Master bathroom, in the corner is the bathtub area, in front is the walk-in shower

Antique door leading to Master Bedroom

Front entry portal. It will be surrounded with stairs leading down and planter boxes.

Another view from the northwest side

NM skies above my house!

The Poodle Gets Kicked

by Patrick J. Buchanan
03/16/2010

Actually, Joe set himself up. From the moment he set foot on Israeli soil, our vice president was in full pander mode.

First, he headed to Yad Vashem memorial, where he put on a yarmulke and declared Israel "a central bolt in our existence."

"For world Jewry," Joe went on, presumably including 5 million Americans, "Israel is the heart. ... Israel is the light. ... Israel is the hope."

Meeting Shimon Peres the next day, Joe confessed that when he first visited at age 29, "Israel captured my heart."

In Peres' guestbook, he wrote, "The bond between our two nations has been and remains unshakeable."

As Peres spoke, Biden took notes. When Peres called him "a friend," Joe gushed, "It's good to be home."

Walking around the corner to Prime Minister Netanyahu's office, Joe called him by his nickname, "Bibi," declared him a "real" friend and said the U.S. relationship with Israel "has been and will continue to be the centerpiece of our policy."

Interior Minister Eli Yishai announced construction of 1,600 new apartment units in Arab East Jerusalem. Stunned and humiliated, Biden issued a statement saying he "condemned" the decision.

Netanyahu has apologized for the timing, but they are going ahead with the apartments. What are the Americans going to do about it? At this point, nothing but bluster.

On his departure for Jordan, Ha'aretz reported that Israel plans to build 50,000 new homes in East Jerusalem over the next few years.

Consider also the most remarkable statement of Biden's first 24 hours.

Biden is saying we are a more effective force for Mideast peace in a region where Arabs outnumber Israelis 50 to one if everyone knows we sing from the same song sheet as Israel and have no policy independent of Israel's.

Even with the closest ally in our history, Britain in World War II, there was space between Winston Churchill and FDR on where to invade -- North Africa, Italy, France, the Balkans? -- whether to beat Stalin to Berlin, Prague and Vienna, who should be supreme allied commander, even whether the British Empire should survive.

Ehud Olmert did not consult President-elect Obama on whether to launch a war on Gaza and kill 1,400 Palestinians. Nor did Netanyahu consult us before Mossad took down the Hamas minister in Dubai.

If they are, we will end up with all of Israel's enemies, who are legion, and only Israel's friends, who are few.
