How the TLC Show Sister Wives Makes Polygamy Seem Appealing

News broke this week that police in Lehi, Utah are looking into prosecuting the Brown family, stars of TLC's new reality show Sister Wives, for being bigamists. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Utah code "defines bigamy through cohabitation, not just through legal marriage contracts." As Sister Wives portrays the happily polygamist relationship of the aggressively cheerful Kody Brown and his wives Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn, it's not surprising that local cops don't appreciate the show-it not only celebrates an illegal relationship taking place in their town, it's also been receiving positive publicity from national publications.

And the show does show this polygamist family in a pretty glowing-and mesmerizing-way. Sister Wives is edited to make a four-wife household seem not only normal and relatable, but the wives also use the language of choice to make clear that their lifestyle is a conscious, wise decision-they're not being coerced into sharing one man.

In terms of how they normalize their unusual family structure, anyone who has watched other reality shows about large families (Kate Plus 8; 19 and Counting) will recognize the domestic scenes in Sister Wives: Watch them cook breakfast-just like you do, but supersized, with obligatory shots of enormous condiment containers! Watch them do yard work as a merry, laughing team! Listen to them talk about the nitty-gritty details of their family arrangement in a way that is familiar and appealing!

On this last point, I was especially struck by Janelle's narrative.

The stars of the new TLC show Sister Wives stopped by the Today Show this morning to teach the public about polygamy. When asked how he pulls it off, husband Cody smiles and points to the sky - he thanks God for his four wives, and clearly Cody's living the good life. As for the wives, they admit they get jealous. How do they deal with it? They "get over" themselves. They also schedule days for alone time and intimacy. So could they make the system work with another husband? In response to that question, Cody sits silent, while the wives say that would never happen.

But I think the best part of the interview comes toward the end of this video. When asked if they worry that their 16 children will have a problem dealing with reality TV infamy, I can't help but think: "That's the least of their problems." Even so, I'm intrigued by the show, and I'll try to keep an open mind.

Do You Watch TV Wedding Shows?

I've made no apologies about my love for TLC's Say Yes to the Dress, and tonight the network is adding yet another bridal series to its slate with Battle of the Wedding Designers (just in time for wedding season here at Sugar!). The show will follow three event planners as they compete to plan one couple's special day - with the usual mix of drama, tears, and crazy characters, of course. Sounds like another guilty pleasure to add to my growing TiVo list!

It seems like every TV season we get at least two or three new wedding-themed shows. Most recently, there's been My Fair Wedding With David Tutera, Four Weddings, and the nastier side of nuptials, aka Bridezillas. I can't possibly watch them all, but if I'm spending a night at home, and they happen to come on? Well, in that case, I'm totally enthralled. How about you?

Kate Gosselin Says "6 Is Just a Big Baby" Do You Agree?

Last night on Kate Plus 8, the mom of multiples talked about her sextuplets turning 6. The Gosselins have long referred to their twins, Mady and Cara as the big girls and Aaden, Alexis, Collin, Hannah, Joel, and Leah, as the little kids. Kate wondered aloud when her youngest children will be considered just "kids" and quickly decided "6 is just a big baby - right?"
