Let's go surfing now, everybody's learning how, come on and shop for baby with me... After dusting off all of those Summer toys for the tot's amusement, it's time to suit her up for some hot action! Whether you're headed to the pool, beach, or backyard, baby girl needs to be dressed and accessorized for the occasion.

Protect her from harmful UV rays with child-friendly sunscreen and sunglasses. Safeguard wee feet with petite sandals and safeguard foreheads with brimming hats. Active sports who delight in boogie boarding and riding the waves can stave off rashes with body tees and board shorts. Tots sporting bikinis and swimsuits should have a cover-up for lunch by the pool or building sandcastles. And don't forget a towel to keep that tush from getting too sandy on the way home.

Before you and your tot hop a plane to a sunny destination, make sure you throw some sun protective clothing in your suitcase. While the garments shield your child's tender flesh from 99 percent of all harmful UV rays, they also keep them cool when they are out of the water and walking around in the heat. Last week, my husband and I took our kids on vacation and their Sunbusters clothing came in handy. Being from San Francisco, we are used to a mild climate so when temperatures hit 111 degrees, my daughter was more than happy to trade her swimsuit for a pink and lime long sleeve all in one ($46). My son opted for a pair of board shorts and a long sleeve rash shirt ($38). The garments are made of a quick drying fabric that is resistant to chlorine and provided our wee ones with 50+ sun protection so all we had to do was lather lotion on their limbs and faces.

If you’ve just eked your millionth sun salutation out of that thin, raggedy rectangle you call a mat, it might be time to spring for a new one. But what to do with the old? Certainly, you could recycle it or even donate it if it isn’t too far gone, or you could tap your inner Martha and try a little creative repurposing:

1. Hang it horizontally in your garage to keep car doors from scraping the walls.

2. Use it as a kitchen mat in front of the stove or sink.

3. Lay it under your sleeping bag on your next camping trip; it won’t provide much in the way of cushioning, but at least you won’t feel every rock and stick.

4. Scrub the heck out of it, then cut it up as liners for shelves and drawers.

5. Make it into floor covers for the backseat area so your kids’ muddy shoes and cleats won’t ruin your mats.

6. Carpet the tree house!

7. Cut it into small circles and use them under furniture legs to protect the floor.

8. Wrap it around that attic beam or basement pole you keep running into.

9. Put it under the litter box so the cat won’t track stuff all over the floor.

What Can I Do to Make My Skin Less Prone to Sunburn?

Is there anything I can do to make my skin less prone to sunburn in the summer?

A:

Obviously applying sunscreen is a must. Generously apply a broad-spectrum, water resistant formula with SPF of at least 30 to all exposed areas, including your scalp. Apply enough to fill a shot glass to your body and 1/2 a teaspoon to your face and reapply every two hours.

In addition, wear protective clothing that is tightly woven and dark in color along with a hat and sunglasses. Several companies now make UV-absorbing clothes that have a high Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating, indicating the amount of rays it absorbs. A 50 UPF fabirc will only allow 1/50th of the sun's rays to penetrate.

Last, if you use any products with retinol or glycolic and salicylic acid, consider taking a break from them as they can make you more sensitive to the sun. You can also take Heliocare supplements (available OTC at most drugstores), which have antioxidant properties and if taken before sun exposure can help maintain the skin's ability to protect against sun damage.

Carry-On Only? Here's What Workout Essentials to Include

I wish I was handed a quarter for every time one of my travel companions said, "You should just do carry-on" or asked, "Why don't you pack lighter?" Whenever I do try to pack lighter, I find my workout wear gets left out. There are lots of compact gym essentials that can easily fit in a suitcase, but when it comes right down to the basics, how do you know what to take? Here are some options I found that may do the trick!

Pack Moisture-Wicking Items: Any workout wear that soaks up the sweat while you're working out, will also be a quick-drying item that you can easily wash in your home-away-from home. If you're staying in a hotel, as soon as you get back from your fitness class or the gym, throw your gear in the bathtub. Fill the tub with lukewarm water until it's covering your clothes; add in a tablespoon or two of shampoo; swish around the water a few times; and let soak for a half hour to an hour. Drain out the water, rinse your gear, and hang to dry on the shower curtain rod. Your items should be dry by the next morning and ready for you to wear again!
