Sippy Cups Can Lead to Speech Issues

Sippy cups save mothers from mopping up spills and allow tots a bit of freedom to roam with their beverages, but now the convenient cups have been linked to speech delays in children.

According to a recent WebMD article, sucking on the sipper's stiff spouts may lead to lisps and slurred speech. To see how to solve the problem, read more. Sandra Holtzman, a speech pathologist said:

If a child goes from the breast or the bottle to a sippy cup, they tend to drink it as if it were a bottle. They lie back or tip their neck in the usual manner, so it's almost like drinking a bottle. They have a hard object or spout with various shapes depending on the type of cup, and their bodies are tipped back. This hard object or spout misplaces the tongue and pushes the teeth out as the thumb can.

For parents looking for a solution, experts suggest switching out sippy cups with those with straws.

Did Your Lil One Receive Early Intervention Services?

We all get excited about our children's accomplishments - from the first time they rolled over to the first time they uttered a real word - but for some mothers these bragging rights are more monumental if their lil one had a delay of some sort.

According to the National Early Childhood Technical Assistance Center, approximately 300,000 infants and toddlers received some sort of Early Intervention in 2006 and that number is only expected to rise in coming years. Early Intervention is the federally mandated, state-run program that provides services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy to tots that are experiencing delays. Though program rules vary from state to state, the programs are usually tailored for tots under the age of three, with the hope being that the services will address the delays before the toddler reaches school.

Do You Sign With Your Babe?

Most baby stores now carry sign language merchandise from books to DVDs and flashcards to placemats.

I only taught my lil one the sign for "more," but my friends have been more diligent in their efforts. Advocates say that children who sign are less likely to throw tantrums since they can communicate earlier. On the flip side, others argue that signing can delay speech development as tots learn to rely on their hands.

The famous Dubliner's son James was diagnosed with a neuro–genetic disorder called Angelman's Syndrome, which is often characterized with developmental delays, stiff, jerky gait, absent speech, excessive laughter and seizures. Previously afraid to discuss his son too much in public, Farrell has taken advantage of his time in the spotlight to discuss the chromosomal defect. As reported in People, he said:

I didn't talk about my son [but] I felt like I was betraying him, like it could be misconstrued as shame, which would be terrible, because he's such a celebration.

It's just different. It's not different to me. He has his own path. He's just brilliant. He's nothing but a gift. As far as I'm concerned he's exactly the way he should be."

Clearly the rugged foreigner is delectable eye candy, but his efforts to raise awareness of Angelman's Syndrome have earned him Sugardaddy status.
