babysugar Diaries: Getting Baby on a Schedule

Like many first moms, I was certain I would get my baby on a schedule right away. As soon as she made her debut, plans changed. I spoiled her -letting her fall asleep in my arms whenever she pleased and allowing her to nap as she pleased. Again, I vowed that number two would be different and I would have him following the clock. To see how that plan is panning out,

Once more, my child greeted me with a face I couldn't resist and I have failed to stick to a strict timeline. Luckily for me, my first child easily fell into her own routine, but can also roll with the flow if we need her to eat earlier or nap later. As for my lil guy, he seems to be mapping out his own agenda quite nicely though we are trying to provide more structure with him. Over the last few weeks, I have tried to let him "tell" me how I can meet his needs. So far, my five-month-old boy still takes his early bird nap, a later morning snooze and a lengthy afternoon siesta. By 6 p.m., he's ready to hit the sheets and call it a night. The toughest part of the sleep battle I am currently fighting is getting him to "like" being put in his crib with eyes wide open.

What Time Does Junior Go To Bed?

Some parents are strict about putting their tots down to bed at exactly the same time every night. Others let their kids decide when it's time for lights out.

Since my babe is still a wee one, her bedtime is 7 o'clock. As she gets older, we'll push it back. But for now, I'm enjoying the few hours of adult time that hubby and I have.

My husband's favorite past time is to listen to live bands and he very much wants my company. I prefer early quite nights while the bands typically start at 10:30PM. How can I make the crowds, noise, and boisterous scene in general more bearable so I can actually spend time with my husband? -- Up for Suggestions Samantha

Dear Up for Suggestions Samantha --

First of all, I must commend you for asking for suggestions on how to make his hobby more manageable for you rather than finding ways to get out of it. Your husband is very lucky to have such an understanding wife!

To make the late nights less daunting, make a compromise with your hubby -- as we all know, relationships are all about give and take. Grin and bare it every once in a while, but in return, let him know that you want him to spend some nights at home, relaxing with you, doing what you want to do. Perhaps you can do a little research and see if there is a different venue with similar music that has a more desirable show time. A cocktail or two will surely take the edge off and could make the noise a little more manageable -- and who knows, you might even actually enjoy yourself!

Knowing that the loud nights aren't an everyday occurrence will make them much less painful for you, not to mention having something to look forward to when it's your night to make the plans. I hope these tips help!

It's good to get rid of all the clutter in your life - at home, at work, and even on your computer. Dealing with too many emails can make you overwhelmed and less productive, because weeding through a mess of messages can feel like a herculean task. Organization expert Peter Walsh shared some great tips for better managing your emails:

Archive all your emails: "Bite the bullet: archive-don't delete-archive all of those emails or all of those emails from more than a month ago, and start from scratch today." You can set up an automatic filtering system that will immediately shuttle your emails to the appropriate category. Most email systems have the option, and Walsh favors Hotmail for that function.

Keep your inbox clean: The organizing expert says he's "never had more than 10 or 15 emails in my inbox at any one time." He's able to answer every email he receives by having them automatically categorized.

Set aside time for email: Set up a schedule for your emails. Walsh avoids looking at emails the first hour of his morning and does whatever needs to get done "first up in the day." He then sets aside 90 minutes of uninterrupted time to handle email. "I don’t try to multitask; I think multitasking is a huge myth. Trying to do more than one thing at once, you end up doing nothing well," he says.
