Economy Causes Parents to Cut Costs While Potty Training

Prepare for some potty emergencies. Parents are willing to try most anything to toilet train their children quickly. Since the economy is sagging, some mothers are even cutting costs by taking their tots straight from diapers to underwear. Disposable training pants like Huggies Pull-Ups and Pampers Easy-Ups can set a family back up to $100 per month.

According to The Nielsen Co., "Sales of disposable training pants declined 3.2 percent to $731.2 million for the 52 weeks ending June 13 and the number of training pants sold is down 10 percent." This is the first time in the 20 years since the diaper-like pants were introduced that sales have declined, leading many industry experts to blame the economy.

One of the biggest challenges a tot faces is learning how to use the potty. For many parents, it is a process that can take months to complete. While nobody goes off to college in diapers, there are some techniques that parents can employ to get the job done faster.

A new potty training device may be the answer to a diaper changing parent's dreams. Researchers at the Department of Urology at the University of Antwerp found that an alarm signaling a wet diaper led children to use the toilet five times more frequently than their peers who were device free. Authors of the report said:

The alarm itself distracts the child out of his activity and strengthens the awareness of bladder behavior. By bringing the child to the bathroom at that moment, further reinforcement of its awareness is given.

Parenting Q&A: Child Needs to Be Potty Trained For Preschool!

Q. My two and a half year old daughter has to be out of diapers by September when she starts preschool. So far she
has shown no interest in being potty trained. Do you have any tips on how I can get her engaged in the process?

A. How to Excite, Engage and Succeed in Potty Training Your Toddler With 100% Success. If I could write that book I would have enough money to end our current economic crisis. Sleeping, eating, tantruming and pooping are the most often asked questions of any early childhood expert. While not everyone agrees, I think pushing a child toward a deadline; school or impending baby sister causes undue stress around a bodily function. While I’m not a therapist or a doctor, that can’t ever be good.

Having said that, there are some steps that can move toddlers in the right direction in a clear yet serendipitous manner. To see Lonna's specific instructions, read more.

1. Remove the changing table, change toddlers standing up in the bathroom. Yes, even those hard to clean messy diapers. This makes changing a function rather than a passive playtime or punishment.
2. Certainly try to read signs that your child needs to eliminate and ask them if they need to go on the potty. I do not get caught up on the potty itself, I think a child insert on the regular toilet is best, with a stool, but if the Pretty Potty that sings “Ta Da” makes you happy, I won’t judge. The important point is that going to the bathroom goes on in the bathroom.
3. Over spending on panties, expecting fashion to push the progress forward as well as bribes can work, however, I think this can cause a level of expectation of rewards for all of life's little necessities. I encourage spending a long weekend with a lot of liquids and no diaper so your child can run to the bathroom as the urge occurs. When, not if, accidents happen, the child helps clean up without drama or upset. After a long weekend of Potty Boot camp, have the child wear underwear and keep close to home for another week.

Actress Tori Spelling is no different than the rest of us when it comes to this task. Intimidated by the process of training 23-month-old son, Liam, Spelling turned to the experts at Huggies Pull-Ups to help her with the task, including the Potty Dance, a nine-step dance to help encourage tots to use the potty. We caught up with Spelling at an event to introduce the dance (complete with a lit disco floor and DJ), and asked her about her top five tips for moms entering the potty-training arena. Interview With Tori Spelling: Four lil Questions

A refrain of "Donna Martin graduates" will always run through my mind when I think about 90210 actress Tori Spelling. And while both she and her famous character may have faced a few obstacles in their lives, Spelling has certainly moved on. The down-to-earth mother of two - Liam, almost 2, and Stella, 8 months - continues to star in her reality series, Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood, with husband Dean McDermott, recently signed on to do a few episodes of the new 90210 and is preparing to release her followup to her autobiography, called Mommywood.

We spoke with the mama about parenthood at a Huggies Pull-Ups event in New York yesterday.

On how she balances her attention between her children: It really helps to have a partner who is just as hands on, because then we're both available at any given time. At the end of the day, you only have two hands, you have two children and two hands and someone needs to get fed and someone needs to get changed. Liam, at this point, needs more attention and Stella is just getting into the mode where she needs to be stimulated more . . . she needs activity. She is obsessed with Liam so I often find if I can do something in the room where he can walk around, he can play, and she can be in her exersaucer. She sees him doing things and she's learning from him and they both feel like they get the attention. I sing songs, I put their names in, and I always . . . I call them monkey and ladybug . . . and then la, la, la Monkey and then la, la, la Ladybug and then la, la, la Monkey so no one feels like their name is coming last.
On the difference of conversation with costar Jennie Garth: Its funny, when we first filmed the series, we were really young girls and I remember at the time, we were in our late teens, we'd be talking about the boys and the stuff girls talk about in their late teens, early 20s. And now, we're still giggly like school girls on set, but whenever there's a break we're just swapping baby stories and I'm constantly with my Blackberry., I have all of my pictures, like, "Look at Stella yesterday." "There's Stella eating breakfast." You're just obsessed and then I'm like, "Oh My God, am I like ranting on and showing her pictures of my babies?" And she's like, "Are you kidding, this is my world!" "I'm like, you're right." We can go on for hours.

You Know You're a Mother When: Poop on Your Arm

Pressed for time, I rushed home from work to switch my bag for a purse and head out for an interview. But in between the shuffling, my two-year-old, who is potty training, tore off his diaper and dashed in the bathroom. "I did it!" he exclaimed, before I heard the toilet paper roll, the sound of a flush and the rush of faucet water. He ran in the room and jumped up on me, his bare bottom resting on my arm as we did the dance of joy down the hallway. Then, I put him in a fresh diaper and he was off.

Moments later, I glanced toward my forearm and realized that he hadn't peed or perfected wiping. Within two seconds, the sink was filled with soapy bubbles and my arms were submerged. A quick mom fix before I headed out the door. Once you have kids, you don't freak out about bodily fluids - you just figure out the quickest way to clean up the mess.
