Trendtotting: Matilda Ledger Is Pretty in Pink

Waltzing lil Matilda Ledger was out with her mommy Michelle Williams in Brooklyn, and both girls sported wide smiles. The down-to-earth duo was dressed comfortably in their usual understated attire. While mum looked smart in white capris and a crisp oxford button-up, her mini me opted for some sassy accessories - punchy pink Crocs and a shoulder-slung handbag to accent her sweet sundress.

The 2-year-old couldn't get much more lovable, but we are definitely starting to see a bit of her own signature fashion flare. If you want your wee one to play it up in hot pink, check out these fun purses that will carry all her goodies.

lil Tip: Brushing Your Child's Teeth

Trying to get your tot's teeth brushed, but they aren't into it? Turn the task into a game. When my daughter purses her lips and shuts off access to her pearly whites, I ask questions about her favorite things. How happy would you be if...and then fill in the blank with things like "our house was made of marshmallows," "the whole world was pink" and "you had a pet unicorn"? Her wide grin allows me the opportunity to slip the toothbrush in.

Oh, How Times Have Changed

I was in born in San Francisco five years after Free to Be You and Me was released, but even in an era of everything goes, there were still the age-old stereotypes of girls favoring pink and boys liking blue. When it comes to gender, I'm trying to raise my kids with a sense that anything goes. If my son runs down the hall in my high heels and a few purses slung on his arms, so be it. Or if my daughter brags that she is faster than a bunch of boys, I root her on. I made a conscious decision when I became a mom to proclaim, "You must be so proud of yourself!" as often as I say, "I'm so proud of you." And to state, "You will make someone happy someday," rather than assuming they will be with partners of the opposite sex. To see what happened, read more.

So the other day, I was awed when my lil guy wheeled in a stroller, shushing me because his baby was asleep, and my daughter followed carrying an identical doll. I asked if they were their kids. "No. He's a single dad and has twins so I'm his handy helper," my daughter said, before explaining that a handy helper is similar to a nanny, but dresses fancy. I asked her where the babies' mother was and she replied, "They are adopted." It's amazing to see how things change in what seems like a short amount of time.

Why Didn't Anybody Tell Me: Last Hurrah

Every mother has one - that last day of freedom, when your life was still entirely yours - only you didn't realize it until after the fact. I remember mine.

My husband and I hopped a cab across the city and though it broke down halfway to our destination, we didn't care because it was before car seats, babysitters and bedtimes. My purse was the size of a wallet and my mini skirt would never have passed the bending-over-to-pick-up-your-tot-test. To see what happened, read more.

When we finally arrived at our friend's party, we hung out on a sunny pier drinking cocktails and enjoying uninterrupted conversation. After that, the whole gang went to a watering hole for more drinks and dancing before we eventually went home in the wee hours of the morning knowing we could sleep through the next day.

A few days later, I peed on a stick and watched a thin pink line appear. And, realized that my last hurrah had unintentionally been my daughter's first. From that moment on, my life was no longer mine. Even when my husband and I have a night off or take a weekend away, our kids are always on our minds. And, we wouldn't trade that for anything.
