What Do You Think About OTC Paternity Tests?

The UK Sun had an article today about how over-the-counter paternity tests would soon be available in Britain. Little did I know that they've been legally available online in California, Oregon, and Washington since 2008.

The American kits, created by Identigen, sell for about $30 and come with cotton swabs that are to be used for taking samples from the inside of the baby, mother, and man's mouth. Once these samples are sealed in plastic bags along with $119 lab fee and a consent form, they're sent in for analysis. The results can be accessed online within three to five working days.

Although the results are supposed to have 99.99 percent accuracy, they're not allowed as evidence in court, where a more expensive and standard DNA test is required.

Some people think it's a bad idea to make this information so easily available. The person who would stand to lose most from the results, they reason, is the child who is suddenly without a father. What do you think about over-the-counter paternity tests?

Move over Jerry Springer, drugstores are now carrying an over-the-counter paternity test that may put an end to baby mama drama - or at least, keep it within the confines of a home.

Everyone's got election fever on this week's Glee, and we find out the results of both the student body and congressional race. Because of the political ad threatening to expose Santana, we watch her deal with her sexuality, and the support she gets (and doesn't get) from those around her. It brings out a soft side of Finn (no, that's not a reference to Santana's preferred insults for Finn), who asks everyone to sing a song celebrating women. Sue also gets taken to task for her love life, but her tactics end up hurting Coach Beiste.

Meanwhile, Puck and Shelby take their forbidden relationship to the next level, and Rachel does something to help Kurt, but she ends up hurting the whole glee club. It's a surprisingly emotional episode, and there are lots of great lines (Santana and Sue really outdo themselves this week), but what made it for me are this week's upbeat, encouraging musical numbers. Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were up early this morning to grab breakfast at an IHOP in Sherman Oaks, CA. Justin submitted to a confidential DNA test on Friday and is currently waiting for the results. According to reports, Justin also plans to sue his accuser, Mariah Yeater, should the tests conclude he is not the father of her baby.

Ryan Phillippe waved to fans yesterday afternoon as he headed into the Jimmy Kimmel Live studios in LA. The actor's out and about chatting up his new movie, The Lincoln Lawyer, ahead of its release on Friday. A development in his personal life, however, has derailed some of his promotional talking points - he's allegedly the father of his ex, Alexis Knapp's, baby, and Ryan says he'll gladly take a paternity test once the infant is born. Ryan didn't chat with Jimmy about that situation, but he did talk about his older children Ava and Deacon.
