Be Careful When Taking Bath Photos of Your Tots

What family album doesn't include a bath photo? An Arizona family may be thinking twice before ever having such snapshots developed again. The couple's three children were taken from them and placed in foster care after a Wal-Mart employee discovered nude images of the kids while printing up the clan's vacation photos. Though the parents have since been cleared of any wrongdoing, investigators originally were tipped off when a store employee found pictures of the children, ages 5, 4, and 1½, in various states of undress while en route to the tub. Following the youngsters' removal from their home, the state launched an inquiry into the possibility of sexual assault which included thorough physical examinations of each child. The family is now suing Wal-Mart, the city, and the state for punitive damages for defamation and outrage.

My Son the Nudist

At 2 years old, is there really anything wrong with a child running around in his birthday suit? Ever since my son has been able to tear off the tabs of his diaper, he's liked to lounge free around our house. It isn't a daily occurrence and is getting more and more infrequent as he gets older, but I figure if he's happy and confident, why force him into a pair of sweats? As a mom, I don't see him basking in the freedom of not being clothed as any big deal but am surprised by how conservative other people are about it.

Since his streaking is limited to our apartment and only witnessed by our family and close friends, I doubt I'll take issue with it unless he's still roaming around in the buff as a teenager. In foreign countries babies strip down to their diapers or bare bums and tear across the beach enjoying the sunshine, water and freedom from clothing. Girls and women go topless and wade in the surf wearing just bottoms and no one bats an eye or does a double take. But in America, most people keep themselves and their kids - even wee babes - covered with a pair of swim trunks or a bathing suit. A discussion up for debate at my house nearly every morning, I want to know when you think kids should be shielded from their parents' family jewels.

In some families, nudity is acceptable at any age. A number of conservative folks start hiding their unmentionables when their kids are able to talk and point. For others, the age depends on the gender - naked mama and daughter is OK, but nude dad and teenage daughter is awkward. It can also be influenced by culture.
