Babysugar Diaries: Pregnant Lady on the Move

A baby in the tummy often leads a woman to "nest" in her home. When I was pregnant the first time around, I painted rooms, cleaned out closets and gave away bags of clothes. This time around, I haven't so much as bought newborn diapers or purchased a layette! That's all about to change.

Not anticipating a move, my husband and I stumbled upon a piece of property that screamed "Home Sweet Home." Upon entering the house, I chased my wee one from room to room. Instantly comfortable, she seemed to be telling me, "Here's my room and here's your room." All in love with the house, we have moved forward with contracts and inspections. Now my task of preparing for baby seems quite simple as I start to mentally gear up for a birth and a move. One major perk - I won't have to lift any heavy boxes!

Jessica Alba Has Made Nesting Her Instinct

Most first time mothers are nervous about bringing home babe - mainly since they cannot prepare for the unknown. But, It seems that actress Jessica Alba has made it her mission to be ready.

The celeb has taken a break from working to concentrate on getting her house situated for her impending baby-to-be. The starlet who will soon welcome a lil girl is also making an extra effort to be mindful of her health. A recent article in People reported:

I have to make sure that I'm eating more of the right nutrients and vitamins, but I'm not used to eating this much," she says. "I've had to take time out of the day to eat before I get cranky and rundown and tired. Before I was just like the energizer bunny."

Thank goodness too, because we have a ton of really talkative and helpful members who have saved my sanity at 1am on more than one occasion during my pregnancy and even more so now that Audrey is here. It's a relief to know that no matter what I'm going through there's someone on there who has already been there or is going through the same thing now.

What was the most shocking part of becoming a parent?
I feel like I'm surprised by something new every day! Most shocking is how every new thing she does qualifies for both of us as the most incredible thing we've seen ever. She just now started making little sounds (hey!, ahh!) and it was as exciting as anything that's ever happened to me. I suddenly feel like the most easily-amused woman alive. I might keel over when she smiles for the first time.
If you could have one aspect of your pre-baby days back, but keep the
kids, what would you choose? Sleep. No contest.
At what moment did you fall in love with your child? When they brought her screaming self over to me right after birth and she calmed down when she heard my voice. Amazing.

When It's Time For a Mother to Let Go

While many new moms are anxious to get their lil darlings out of diapers, San Francisco Chronicle reporter and author Regan
McMahon is experiencing a milestone long down the line - that of her son leaving the nest.

In "The Great Letting Go" she talks about her emotions in saying goodbye to her firstborn as he prepares for college. In regard to how hard it is to let go, she said:

This comes as a great surprise to a mom who, when he was a baby and toddler, couldn't wait for him to go to sleep by 8 so my husband and I could briefly recapture our life as a pre-kid couple. When he got to be a bigger kid, I relished every play date and sleepover that freed me to do what I wanted for a little while.

Now I'm greedy for every minute he's home. He's gone from the boy I wish would clean his room to having rock star status. I anticipate his arrival at dinner time with the eagerness of a fan hoping for a glimpse of the guitar player as he steps momentarily from limo to backstage door.

Tiny Babies May Leave the Nest Later Than Larger Peers

Do small baby toes equal smaller grown up steps? Young adults who came into the world with a low birthweight tend to stay in the nest longer than their full-term peers, according to a new Finnish study.

The study found individuals in their late teens and 20s who weighed less than 3 pounds, 5 ounces at birth were less likely to have moved out of their parents' home, to be living with a significant other, or to be having sex than people of the same age who were born a normal weight.

To examine how known personality traits of adults born very small might affect their maturation the study followed 162 very low birthweight young adults and 188 normal birthweight adults who ranged in age from 18 to 27. The group's average age was about 22.
At the time of the survey, the very low birthweight individuals were 29 percent less likely to have lived with a spouse or intimate partner and 75 percent more likely to still be living with their parents.
Low birthweight young women were more than twice as likely to still be virgins, while their male counterparts' likelihood of never having had sex was nearly triple that of their normal birthweight peers. On average, the very low birthweight individuals had fewer lifetime sexual partners than full-term individuals.

The researchers noted none of the findings aren't particularly beneficial or disadvantageous, but do provide interesting insight into how low birthweight may play into development and choices later in life. What do you think?

Multiples Baby Shower: Favors

Keeping with the bird theme, I've filled cellophane bags with delicious toasted coconut and seedy trail mix to create a nest appearance. What can often be found in a nest? Gummy worms and colorful jelly beans, of course. Seal the bag with soft toned ribbons and leave them in a basket by the front door. Guests will delight in the sweet and salty stash for their ride home.
