Tell Mommy: Have You Done Something Wrong in the Name of Motherhood?

Moms can be a protective bunch - sticking up for their child when they are wronged or going to bat for their hubby when someone shoots him down. And sometimes, she takes that badge of motherhood and uses it for her own agenda. In the "Don't Walk on the Grass" episode of Desperate Housewives, Gaby chews out Juanita's principal, which earns her daughter a leave from school. While the sassy-mouthed mama believes Juanita's punishment is too harsh, she goes overboard and gives the head of the school a piece of her mind. Always the voice of reason, it is Carlos that calls her out on her selfish act.

Help a Single Mama Out - Be That Woman!

No doubt about it - parenting is the toughest job... period. The only thing that could make it harder is the prospect of being a single mom holding down a job in a tough economy. Mums who are running the show on their lonesome are admirable and strong and though they may not say it out loud, they can often use a helping hand. This small stick figured animated clip, which was shown at the Washington Area Women's Foundation annual leadership luncheon, serves as a good reminder that it takes a village to raise a child, which results in a happy mother.

Do You Judge Other Mothers?

Some would say it is human nature to judge others. If that's the case, it is certainly true when it comes to parenting styles. In motherhood, the narrowed eyes and hushed whispers can get a little out of control. As much as women tout, "We should not judge each other, but support each other!" moms still find ways to criticize each other's choices in parenting, especially when their own babes are affected. On the Desperate Housewives "Everybody Ought to Have a Maid" episode, one of Gabby's "friends" tells her she is a lousy mother... to her face! While you may not agree with other mums and their parenting style, do you find yourself judging them?

Is Birth More About the Mother or Baby?

A friend recently told me she was shocked that I had allowed my sisters and sister-in-law into the delivery room when I had my kids. I told her I don't think of birth as a production centered around me and my husband, but rather the baby. Each of my children was lucky enough to be welcomed into the world with their godmother present. While some ladies primp for the occasion, bring a picture to focus on or stock up on their favorite snacks for the hospital stay, I'm usually too preoccupied watching the monitors and coping with contractions. Who do you think the experience is about?

Tell Mommy: What Do Moms Do That Dads Don't Do?

In Motherhood, which comes out today, Uma Thurman plays Eliza, a Manhattan stay-at-home mom of two who is planning her daughter's sixth birthday party while trying to finish a parenting magazine contest entry on the topic "What does motherhood mean to you?" Small potatoes, right? The film takes place in one day, examining Eliza's cluttered life - the early morning rush of getting the kids ready, the dog, the apartments (she and her husband have set up shop in a bohemian one bedroom and studio), inability to do it all despite the pressure to be perfect, and quest to make it all mean something.

The film, which BuzzSugar has a review of, was ripe with "been there" mommy moments, but it was a bittersweet quote from Eliza's daughter that brought a single sappy tear and smile to my face.

"Moms do everything, dads only do some things. It's different."

We all have our fair share of mom FAIL moments, and it takes effort to remain content with our choices and sacrifices, but sometimes it's the unintentional, unbiased recognition from a child that reminds us how wonderful motherhood is and how appreciated we are as mothers whether our children know how to verbalize it or not. So be honest and pat yourself on the back here: Is there something you do - or provide - as a mother that their father doesn't do?

What Is Your Worst Mom Fail?

If mama gets one thing crossed off her to-do list in a single day, she's done a good job. Most mothers will admit it's near impossible to keep up with school schedules, the grocery list, car maintenance, birthday parties and everything else relegated to dear old mom. On last night's "The Trip" episode of The Middle, daughter Sue Heck sells enough cheese and sausage for her school's fundraiser to earn her a trip to Indianapolis. Her teacher claims Sue didn't sell anything and is therefore banned from the trip. Like any mother would do, mama Heck gives the teacher, well, heck, and shames him into letting her daughter on board. But as you will find out in the video, it's not the teacher that fails, but the overrun mommy. Typically, the teenage lass will certainly not forget the gargantuan error her mother makes.

New Moms Beware When Taking Pictures of the New Baby!

Wardrobe malfunction alert! Digital cameras and smartphones make it easy to take photos of newborn babies but their casual usage can also cause a mishap that could have Hugh Hefner knocking on mama's door. On her return to The View, Elisabeth Hasselbeck dished on her lil man and revealed an embarrassing moment of her own: she took a photo of Isaiah and sent it around only to realize much later that her nipple was included in the frame. Eek! And if you think that's bad, one of my friends took a picture of her sweet pea but didn't realize her naked body was in the background. Thanks to a mirror in the room, the sleep deprived mother sent out a full frontal nude shot that made its way through her email address book with her sweet boy smiling in the forefront. So before mommy clicks away, she better make sure the porn police won't have reason to come after her!

Are You Honest to God Happy With Your Life?

The Rolling Stones may have said it best when they sang, "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need." Many young ladies dream of a life full of children, a dreamy hubby and all of the fabulous side dishes that come along with motherhood. But ask most any mum and chances are, they will admit their reality is far different from the imaginary one they created before entering mommyhood, and hopefully, for the better. In the "The God-Why-Don't-You-Love-Me Blues" episode of Desperate Housewives, Gaby reveals to Carlos that though her life is completely different from what she once expected, she is honest to God happy. It turns out that fretting about detergent, lost keys, groceries and spot removal can make a woman pretty satisfied when it's all done in the name of love.

So tell mommy, are you leading the life you once imagined? And like Gaby, are you honest to God happy with your life?

Motherhood Isn't Always Instinctual, Sometimes It's Learned

Sadly not every child can claim that their mother loved them unconditionally and with every ounce of their being. Many women will gush about that immediate affection and connection when they hold their babe in their arms for the first time while others know that it comes with time. Still some moms have to learn how to love their children, as it is not instinctual for everybody.

Author Peg Streep spoke with Robin Roberts about her lack of motherly love during her own childhood and how she has overcome it to be a better parent to her own child. In her book, Mean Mothers, Peg shares stories of other women who struggle with the mother-daughter relationships. While it is the darker side of motherhood, some may appreciate the voice on the taboo topic. Do you know someone who could benefit from a lesson on the subject?
