There's nothing like a little morning sickness to serve as a constant reminder that you are pregnant. While there are numerous remedies on the market to curtail the effects of pregnancy-related nausea, 43 percent of LilSugar readers suffered enough to seek out medication.

A new warning from the New York City health department may have many expectant mamas searching the labels of their anti-sickness medications. Praying to the porcelain god is a rite of passage for many pregnant women. For those mums-to-be that can't get a break from morning sickness, there are medicinal options available. Many ailing ladies opt not to take such medication for fear of affecting the baby. Researchers conducted a study and found the drug Metoclopramide, also known as Reglan, to be a "safe medication." One of the researchers, Dr. Rafael Gorodischer, claimed:

We studied exposure in the first trimester because that is the most critical period for the development of the fetus, when most malformations would be caused by an external cause. . . . We can now say with a high degree of confidence that it’s a safe medication.

Baby Bump: Third Trimester Morning Sickness

I survived two pregnancies without morning sickness, but a pregnant Sugar staffer provided me with a tidbit of information that I thought I'd share. She was sailing along smoothly in her third trimester when the dreaded morning sickness she experienced early on in the first trimester was back, and it was worse. She said:

"I was literally seven months and one day pregnant and I started feeling nauseous again. The nausea was accompanied with getting sick this time around. Like all things in pregnancy, everyone is different and some, according to my O.B., have the unfortunate return of nausea. I wish I would have known it could come back, I totally thought I was in the clear - boy was I wrong!"

So it's back to ginger ale and dry crackers for my poor pregnant colleague. But she's right, and while it's not fun, it can be common for morning sickness to surface at any point during a pregnancy.

Morning sickness can last for one day or nine months. Mamas-to-be may experience waves of nausea or hours of vomiting. And, most women are curious to know what causes the sickness. In many studies, researchers test or compare human behavior to animals. Fortunately for other living reproductive animals, humans appear to be the only species that get ill during the expecting months, which has made it tough to decipher the cause.

In the July issue of the journal American Naturalist, Samuel Flaxman and his colleague Paul Sherman said morning sickness is triggered in these specific circumstances:

The sight, smell, or taste of meats and strong-tasting vegetables, which were historically likely to contain foodborne microbes or birth-defect-inducing chemicals

Alcohol and cigarette smoke.

The researchers believe the mother's body is naturally alerting her to stay away from harmful agents, thereby protecting the growing embryo.

While all of this sounds good, I have to wonder about the rest of us that didn't deal with the dreaded sickness. While pregnant with my daughter, I almost craved nausea because it made me feel secure. Having breezed through pregnancy and ended up with a healthy babe, I would never do that again.

Baby Mama Interview: Michael McCullers

What's a man know about being a baby mama?

A lot if you're Michael McCullers, the father of three who wrote and directed the must see movie that hits theaters Friday.

Having previously written Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Austin Powers in Goldmember, McCullers met with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler who he worked with at Saturday Night Live to brainstorm ideas for a film they could work on together. When Fey mentioned that she would like to make a modern day version of the Diane Keaton film Baby Boom, the group developed the idea of a surrogate pregnancy and the story was hatched.

Since he had two children at home and another on the way, McCullers had plenty of crazy pregnancy stories to write into the script. His initial drafts of the film were fine-tuned by Fey and Poehler to ensure that their characters accurately reflected the personalities of an expectant yuppie mom and her less classy surrogate.

Knowing that people would question the idea of a man writing about pregnancy and babymaking, McCullers addressed the question directly:

Am I the best person to write and direct that idea, being a guy? Although I am not a baby-crazed woman, I do live with a baby-crazed woman, which helped. My wife is one of these women who knew early on that she wanted kids. At that point we already had two kids and during the course of the movie we were actually trying to have a third and ended up having a baby while the movie was shooting. So I did have a pregnant wife at home [and] it helped me relate, though I didn’t see her very much.

I’m in my 30s and I’ve started to know a lot of women who are dealing with infertility. All of the sudden infertility and who can have a baby and who can’t has become a big issue with a lot of people in my life. And although there is a lot of anger and emotion that comes with that, there is, at least with the people I know, a lot of humor and funny stuff that goes with it.

Given the sometimes derogatory definition of the term “baby mama,” McCullers also discussed his decision to use the term for the movie’s title:

I saw that phrase migrating into the greater popular culture. People Magazine and Page Six and everyone sort of uses the term baby mama now. Its almost [gone] from unwed mother of your child to just the mother of a child. You know, they’ll say Tom Cruise’s baby mama or whatever, in US Weekly and it seems to be entering into pop culture. And I liked the way it sounded and looked.
