Mommy Dearest: How to Cope With Miscarriage?

Mommy Dearest,

My friend recently suffered a miscarriage and is devastated by the loss. I want to help, but honestly cannot find the words to comfort her. Would sending her flowers be a morbid reminder of recent events? How can I be there for her in this time of despair without overstepping my bounds?

Dear At a Loss,

I am sorry for your friend's loss. Suffering a miscarriage is a terrible event in a woman's (couple's) life. It is a topic close to my heart as both my mother and sister have had multiple miscarriages.

In these situations, there's very little you can say or do to make your friend feel better. But words of encouragement serve as a reminder that she is loved and will get through it. Sending flowers and a card also remind the woman that she has a support system. Spill out your heartfelt sympathy and encourage her to reach out to you when she feels the time is right. And until then, let her know she is in your thoughts.

Mommy Alert! Miscarriage and Caffeine

Contrary to what was reported in this Mommy Alert two weeks ago, a recent New York Times article says there is evidence that caffeine poses a risk to pregnant women. It said:

"The new study, being published Monday in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, finds that pregnant women who consume 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a day - the amount in 10 ounces of coffee or 25 ounces of tea - may double their risk of miscarriage."

So if you're expecting, you may want to err on the side of caution and skip the cup of joe.

Coffee Won't Cause Miscarriages

Have your cup of joe and don't worry about junior. Kate Hudson is one celeb mama who indulges in her cup o' caffeine.

A recent study showed that pregnant women who drink caffeine in moderation are not more at risk for a miscarriage. But since less than two cups of coffee were consumed on a daily basis, it's questionable whether drinking more could have an adverse effect.

Dr. David A. Savitz of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City who conducted the study said past research had similar results. To finish the post, read more.

A Reuters article said:

Most women in the study who drank coffee or other caffeinated beverages consumed about 350 milligrams of caffeine daily before they became pregnant and in very early pregnancy, equivalent to 1.7 7-ounce cups of brewed coffee a day. At the time of the interview, their average caffeine intake had fallen to 200 milligrams.

Savitz and his team followed 2,407 pregnant women and 258 miscarried.

Babies Don't Always Come Easy

Nobody said life was fair and with pregnancy, I find this especially true. I consider myself lucky having gotten pregnant right away with both my kids and all things considered having had easy, uneventful deliveries. I've never experienced the loss that comes with having a miscarriage or the sadness that follows while stowing away items that were enthusiastically purchased for an impending birth.

Since I am a mother, just imagining that void brings me to tears. And, knowing couples that have lost a child or children, some of who seem like they were born to parent makes it all the more devastating.

While statistics vary, most estimate 20 to 25 percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage. So many women don't take the possibility or reality of being a mother for granted. A recent New York Times article about freelance writer, Catherine MacRae Hockmuth's struggle with infertility was especially poignant. To finish the story, read more. It said:

"Most of our friends and family don’t know we have all of these books, photos, names and parenting philosophies. I doubt it occurs to people with real babies that we have prepared exactly as they have, if not more. The only thing we don’t have is the baby book. Hallmark doesn’t carry a version for people like us to preserve our “Empty Uterus” and “Embryo in the Wrong Place” pictures. (Instead of “Our Baby” embossed on the cover, I suppose they could put “Well, It Was a Long Shot Anyway.”)"

Parenting Q&A: How Do I Tell My Kids About Miscarriage?

Q. My four and seven-year-olds were thrilled when I told them I was pregnant. How do I break the news that I miscarried? Should we do something to commemorate the baby?

A. The celebration of life is the most wonderful experience to share. We have come so far as a culture in enjoying the process and sharing it with our children. Mourning a loss, one we know can happen during any pregnancy, is not as comfortable. However, loss is a huge part of life. As our children’s first teachers we must teach them how to mourn. Find the words that your heart and faith can stand behind. Tell them something very sad happened and that it is no ones fault, the baby could not be born. Don’t be afraid to cry. Most importantly, listen to them. Listen to what they ask and answer as simply as you can. As a family you may need closure by commemorating, but don’t rush into anything. Give your heart and mind time to heal a little before you act. Take cues from your children. Help them move on by grieving, listening and giving everyone time.

Did You Spot During Pregnancy?

A few drops may be enough to get a mama-to-be worried, but 20 to 30 percent of pregnant women experience some bleeding. According to the American Pregnancy Association, vaginal bleeding can occur frequently in the first trimester and may not indicate problems. Did you experience this while with child?
