Cozy Coupe Is a Blast From the Past at 30 Years Old

Before they are able to walk, children look for their first set of wheels. Many kids' vehicle of choice in the past 30 years has been the Little Tikes Cozy Coupe ($75). First introduced in 1979, the candy apple red and sunshine yellow sports car hasn't changed much in those three decades. While the exterior has slowly evolved into a cartoon-faced front grill, the interior has retained its bench-style seat and easy-to-maneuver steering wheel. In this age of earth-friendly automobiles, the car remains powered by lil ones' feet. The simple style and classic look of the coach has made the Cozy Coupe the most popular car in America – selling 457,000 units in 2008 and beating out all other US car sales (including Toyota, Honda and Ford).

The Gifted Baby: One-Year-Old

One-year-olds are on the move! Whether they are already walking or on the verge, their increased confidence makes them inquisitive of the world around them. When shopping for gifts for tots seek out toys that help them explore their surroundings. Here our some of our favorite picks!

Toy Box: Water Ball from Little Tikes

As summer heats up, moms are challenged to entertain their school–free tots with activities that will keep them cool and hydrated. It's hard to beat the good old sprinkler in the lawn trick but the $15 Little Tikes Water Ball certainly gives it a run for its money.

While mom or dad inflate the mongo beach ball, the kids can slip on their swimsuits and watershoes preparing for an afternoon of spritzing and slippery wet games. Attach a water hose to the fully blown ball and let the waterworks begin. Parents can determine the height of the fountain sprays by adjusting the water pressure.

Now mom really can sit and relax with her lemonade in the shade.

The Gifted Child: Toys for 6-Month Olds

Going to your local toy store and asking the sales help for advice on a gift for a six-month-old can provide you with more opinions and deep explanations than you bargained for, never mind the fact that half the items are never in stock. Rather than risk disappointing the child’s parents, and wasting your time, stick with one of these items that is sure to make everyone happy (plus, you can just order them online and be done with your shopping!).

The colors and variety of activities on the LeapFrog Learn and Groove Musical Table ($40) encourage kids to pull themselves into the standing position. Once they are standing they can groove to the different musical instruments, turn the pages of the book and hum along to the songs.

The adorable Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Learning Puppy ($22) lights up as he sings familiar songs and encourages your child to hug him and play along. You'll hear "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" and "Patty Cake," as well as a funny little sneeze that to this day keeps my son laughing.

I have always been a believer in buying gifts up to one age group up from a child's age. Either the parents can put them away for a later date, or they can help the child start to learn how to use the toy. While a bit noisy, the sound of the balls popping out of the machine and the chaos they create will keep your little one mesmerized for hours.
