Lying About Your Child’s Age

When it comes to fudging the truth, are kids or adults the experts? Tweens find ways to round up their age to sound older than their actual years while their parents try to slow the aging process and round as their own birthdays pass. At the park the other day, I overheard a woman admitting she flat out lies to her gym about her child's age so they will admit her to the daycare. Her friend claimed they skirt the 2-year-old airline regulation by begging their son not to speak when asked how hold he is - an interesting tactic considering most airlines require a birth certificate upon arrival. Nevertheless, the conversation got me thinking – do you fib about your wee one's age?

Lil Tip: Make Makeup Work For You

There's something magical about makeup that makes youngsters swoon. Perhaps it's their desire to mimic mommy, but lads and lasses alike often love applying blush and eye shadow to their baby faces.

My daughter recently broke out in a rash and I needed to apply special lotion to her face and body. Wary, she shied away saying, "No, no mommy!" Thinking on my feet I said, "It's your makeup." In an instant sat up straight and let me lather the cream onto her peachy cheeks. Smiles all around, I know now that makeup is a powerful bribing tool - even for 20-month-old tots.

What Lies Do You Tell Your Children?

I tell my kids that there's a Santa Claus, that the tooth fairy is small enough to fly under a pillow and that the Easter Bunny sometimes sprinkles carrots in their food when they aren't looking. In other words, I lie.

For the most part, I am honest with my kids to a point that is sometimes much to my own mother's chagrin. My daughter understands that cancer kills people because she's been to the funerals of a few of its victims. She knows that kids disappear because she caught a clip of coverage on Madeline McCann. And, that people can break each other's hearts, because friends have come over to talk about their relationship woes. When she asks questions, I tell her the truth in an age appropriate way and the same goes for my son.

The world is such a crazy place, I think it's OK for my children to believe in the handful of things that keep them innocent - a jolly old guy sliding down our chimney, a sprite stealing teeth and a rabbit crazy about carrots. What do you lie about?

What's the Biggest Lie You Were Told About Motherhood?

A friend of mine called me after she gave birth to her daughter and asked, "Why didn't you tell me all the crazy stuff that happens?"

The truth was, as the first in our group to have a child, I had no one with whom to compare notes. And, I didn't want to scare anyone.

I wasn't sure if everyone spotted for months after giving birth or if it was just me who stood in grocery store line two weeks postpartum thinking that my life had changed forever.

And, I didn't know becoming Dolly Parton a few days after delivering was the norm.

It was an unintentional lie of omission, but once I had my friend to consult it made being a mom (and bringing a subsequent child into the world) all the easier.

When someone said contractions don't hurt or that life after babe is a breeze, we'd call their bluff.

And, make sure to tell our childless friends all the gory, frustrating, beautiful, unattractive and awe inspiring details of motherhood so they can prepare.

While everyone has a different experience once they are with child, most women can recall a fib or two they were told about child bearing or rearing. Tell us yours.

10 Hilarious Modern Family Valentine Moments

They call it funky love. Last night's "My Funky Valentine" episode of Modern Family sure beat a box of chocolates and a vase of roses. It was full of familial situations that would make any mom laugh to the point of tears. Here are the highlights:

Cam dresses Lily up as cupid and Mitchell dismisses her costume as a cut-up boa. Cam replies, "We re-purposed it. It was a Bob Mackie meets Martha Stewart project."
Dylan hands Claire a rose and says, "All women should look as tasty as you when they are old."
Phil and Claire realize that Dylan's gift to Haley isn't a painting, but a scanned photo of him shirtless lying with her turned into one.
Claire suggests that she and Phil spice up their date with some role playing and he tries out a few characters - Reginald Applebee, an English gentleman in town for a polo match, an honorable businessman from Hong Kong and a tiger trainer.
Phil arrives at the hotel bar with a nametag that says "Clive Bixby."

When Manny walks into Mitch and Cam's house and announces, "The universe is cold and loveless" as he pours himself a San Pellegrino straight.
Cam says to Manny, "It's Valentine's Day. It's not the day you run away from love. It's the day you track it down, tie it up, and take it home." before they head out to woo Manny's love Fiona.
Noting that he hasn't eaten any, Cam offers Mitchell a chocolate. Mitchell says, "There were two levels - you know it and I know it."
Gloria asks Jay if he would leave her if she gained 100 pounds. He pauses. Then replies, "That's not fair. I have to get old. You don't have to get fat."
When Phil is awed by Gloria's ability to swap coats with Claire without anyone noticing she's naked. Jays warns, "Take it down a notch Clive."
Claire is driving around with the kids when Phil calls to apologize for the previous night's oil mess not knowing he's on speaker. Luke asks why they had oil and Phil says, "We were making french fries."

Oprah Helps Parents Keep Their Kids Safe From Predators

In yesterday's chilling episode of Oprah, the talk show host sat down with four child molesters and their therapist. After citing a startling statistic - that 90 percent of child molesters know their victims - Oprah (herself a victim of abuse) asked the men the advice they would give parents to protect their children. Here is what they said:

Be alert when an adult spends more time focused on the children at a party than socializing with other adults. You don't have to mistrust people, but open your eyes and watch what is happening.
Be alert when an adult is touching your child unnecessarily - asking the kid to sit on the adult's lap, cuddling, or partaking in back rubs and and foot massages.
Open the lines of communication with your child so they don't seek out other relationships for validation.
Pay attention to your children and believe them when they tell you something is happening. Kids don't lie about this stuff.
Listen to your instincts when something seems odd.

Babies Having Babies in Bulgaria

Sadly teenage pregnancies have become all too common, even trendy in some spots. While movies like Juno make it seem like an American phenomenon, other parts of the world have seen babies having babies for ages. In many countries, the age of consent is as low as 13 or 14. Though it varies by state in America, the average age of consent is 16. So when we hear about an 11-year-old having a daughter, it still shocks the system. When I think of 11-year-olds, I imagine budding girls starting middle school and having their first crush. I think training bras and scrawny legs, not breastfeeding an infant. But that's exactly where one young lady finds herself.

An 11-year-old Bulgarian girl had a daughter in the middle of her wedding festivities. Yes, wedding festivities. The two wanted to tie the knot before the baby's arrival. Apparently it was love at first sight when her 19-year-old fiancé rescued her from a bullying group of lads. The two consecrated their love for each other within a week and unknown to him, she lied about her age so not to scare him off. She immediately became pregnant with his child. Now the two teens are parents to Violeta. The new mommy said, ""I'm not going to play with toys anymore - I have a new toy now."

Can you stand it? Our girl FitSugar was kind enough to share her babes with us in the Sugarbabies group. A creative and crafty mama to boot, she whipped up these fabulous costumes for her girls for their trick-or-treating pleasure. Of the spooky festivities, mommy Fit said:

Halloween was a blast this year. The older they get the easier it is! My older sister wasn't lying. My daughter on the left was dressed against type and is an angel. My older daughter is piece of sushi - tobiko (fish roe).

We adore the nifty gear and the adorable faces inside them. We can't wait to see what they dream up for next year!
