Jenny McCarthy Talks Autism, Instincts, and Jim Carrey

Jenny McCarthy is one candid cover girl. We'd expect nothing less from the passionate mother and autism advocate who posed with her son Evan, 7, for the September cover of Cookie. Check out a few of the highlights from the interview.

On how she felt when Evan had a seven-hour seizure and went into cardiac arrest in 2004: I ran out of my house and into my driveway and screamed at the top of my lungs to God to just take him away, because I loved him so much and he was in so much pain.

On Amanda Peet calling parents who don't vaccinate their children "parasites": I think vaccines are one of the greatest things ever invented. I used to be [Peet] before I had a kid with autism.

On the position of Generation Rescue: "Vaccinations are safe - dot, dot, dot - for some kids. Vaccinations are not safe - dot, dot, dot - for other kids. Let’s protect the ones who are weak. We are pro–safe vaccine. Vaccines are just not one size fits all. If you gave everyone in the world penicillin, there would be some adverse effects for some people, and possibly deaths."

On parental instincts: "We’re the generation of parents who are saying, ‘Listen to us. We are the bosses of our children.’ I want parents to realize that, and not get pushed around by doctors who say, ‘Oh, that’s 100 percent safe.’"

On her most humbling mom moment: "Watching Evan pee on a fake tree in a waiting room."

On her relationship with Jim Carrey: "It’s wacky-weird that not only does [Carrey] not want to get married, which I love, but he also doesn’t want to have more kids, which I love."

Autism advocate and mother, Jenny McCarthy, her son Evan's doctor, Dr. Jerry Kartzinel, and J.B. Handley, co-founder of Generation Rescue were guests. Think what you will of the stance former Playboy playmate cum advocate Jenny McCarthy has taken on autism, but there's no denying that this impassioned mother has helped bring the battle to cure the developmental disorder to the forefront of our attention. While her first three books made us laugh our way through pregnancy and our first years as parents – who can forget her description of what really happens on the delivery table – she has come to symbolize one side of the autism debate in America.

In May 2007, McCarthy announced that her son, Evan, was diagnosed with autism after suffering from a series of seizures following his measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine. Since then, she has been very vocal against the use of mercury in childhood vaccines and for the use of Chelation therapy to treat affected tots. Much to the dismay of many scientists, doctors and her fellow Hollywood mamas, McCarthy has co-authored a book detailing how she and Evan's pediatrician helped her child recover. While the debate wages on, McCarthy has made it her mission to help fellow mothers and find a cure.

While Autism Awareness Day, teaches the public about the developmental disorder, Jenny McCarthy has been vocalizing her thoughts publicly and on paper since her son, Evan, 6, was diagnosed at the age of two. in her latest release, Healing and Preventing Autism: A Complete Guide, the advocate talks about the causes of the developmental disorder and how she has helped her child heal. She coauthored the text with Evan's pediatrician, Dr. Jerry Kartzinel, who also has a son with autism.

Jenny McCarthy Speaks Out on Autism with Larry King

Last night Larry King Live helped highlight National Autism Awareness Day by inviting actress and author Jenny McCarthy to a panel about autism with four well–known doctors. As the mother of an autistic son, Jenny has become a spokesperson for the disorder, which affects one in every 150 children. The debate on the cause of autism often becomes deeply personal and heated and last night's show was no exception.

Careful not to point fingers at vaccinations as the sole cause of autism, the blond bombshell emphatically stated that she, along with many others, are anti–toxin and anti–schedule. In 1983, children were given 10 vaccinations by age five. Now, children receive up to 36 by age six.

Dr. Harvey Karp and Dr. David Tayloe (President-elect of the American Academy of Pediatrics) appeared on the panel where they agreed more research is needed to find the causes of the disorder but argued that vaccinations do more good than harm. When Jenny asked Dr. Tayloe why there has been such a dramatic increase in how many shots are given in the past couple decades, he said:

Because we've been able to develop ways to vaccinate children to prevent pain and suffering.

Sitting next to and supporting Jenny, Dr. Jay Gordon said they are not anti–vaccine. They just believe in changing the schedule of vaccinations, removing toxins from the shots, and reducing the number of shots given at such a young age.

In Jenny's newest book, Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism, the autism spokeswoman gives parents hope on how she and her son have trekked down the road of recovery to a much happier and healthier place.

On June 4, 2008, Jenny and beau Jim Carrey are organizing a march in Washington, D.C. where they are encouraging anyone and everyone to come out and support awareness for autism.

I don't know how I feel about vaccinations and a link to autism but I do believe growing awareness is key to finding a solution.
