Mommy's Lil Helper: Baby Brain iPhone App

Many new moms liken their introduction into motherhood to wading through a fog. I didn't see through the thickness until my daughter was about 6-weeks-old and even then, I still had mush brain. Like most first time mothers, I frantically tracked her nursing habits, diaper changes and nap times because I knew I would forget the schedule moments later.

Mother Jackie Ashton had the same problem, but used it to her advantage and created Baby Brain. The $5 iPhone application may be the end-all-be-all of newborn note taking as it allows parents to add as many children as they want (perfect for multiples) and keeps tabs on which breast was "served" or how many ounces were consumed from a bottle. By entering all of baby's bodily habits into Baby Brain, parents are logging important information that can be tabulated for further analysis and can even be sent to inquiring parties - something my nosy hubby would have appreciated. Moms and pops administering medicine and taking temperatures of sick babes can slip that information onto their phone as well. When the pediatrician questions the parents, they can send it off to the doc in one quick motion. Additionally, the application can analyze days, weeks or months of information to find out how much snoozing a babe is doing in a day and how many feedings (or ounces) they are consuming, lending a hand to moms trying to get baby on a definitive schedule.

When mommy's brain has turned to mush, it's good to know someone, or something rather, is there to fill in the gaps.

Apple Pulls Shaken Baby iPhone App

Tech giant Apple is as family friendly as they come - from its in-store kiddie computer areas that occupy tots while parents are in line making purchases to numerous iPhone apps geared toward the younger set. So I was stunned (and sickened) to learn that though the company does not allow curse words to be used in its applications, an app that encouraged baby shaking was somehow approved. Until recently, users could purchase the game for 99 cents and shake their iPhones to stop babies from crying while a timer kept track of how fast they could accomplish the task. The application has since been pulled. What's your opinion on the issue?

There's a small army of female-friendly iPhone apps available on iTunes that will help you calculate your due date, track baby's kicks or even track contractions. Of course, before you start worrying about any of those things you need to track your menstrual cycle and conceive. Here are some of the best websites and applications that will allow you to follow your body's cycle without writing cryptic notes in your pocketbook.

Ovulation Calendar ($5) - This iPhone or iPod app helps you determine what days of the month you are fertile. It calculates the last day of your period, its length, what days you should abstain from intercourse and what days are best to conceive a boy or girl.
Mon.thly.Info - This free service charts your menstrual cycle. You input a couple important dates, and Mon.thly predicts when your cycle will start again and will even email you when you should, uh, expect things to happen.
Fertility Friend.com's Menstrual Calendar - This free iPhone or iPod app is a light version of the calendar available at Fertility Friend.com. You enter in your last period and cycle length and the calendar displays your predicted period start days as well as your expected ovulation and most fertile days in color.
MyMonthlyCycles - This free service tracks more than just your cycle. It keeps tabs of your periods, symptoms, breast exams, weight and more. The site is decidedly less hip than Mon.thly.Info, but is more comprehensive.

Track Your Nursing Schedule on Your iPhone or iPod

Smartphones are a mother's best friend. From taking notes on the go, keeping track of appointments, or finding the nearest bathroom, there is little our fancy phones can't do for us. They can even keep tabs on baby's feeding habits. The Baby Tracker: Nursing app (available for download on iPhone or iPod for $8) tracks nursing sessions so you don't have to carry a pen and paper and worry about frequency.

The app allows you to record the length of your baby's nursing session and side you nursed on to generate a detailed history and log. You can also record bottle feedings by time (for example milk or formula) and the amount your hungry infant consumed.
