FAO Schwarz to Get the Toys R Us Treatment

It's a toy story. There is no better factory of fun than FAO Schwarz's flagship store. With toy soldier greeters, life-sized stuffed animals and a world-famous walkable piano, the 145-year-old toy emporium has been a wonderland for lil ones and their parents for generations.

FAO Schwarz has been a backdrop in many feature films, including Big,
Baby Boom and Big Business and currently serves as the home of the make your own Muppet Whatnot Workshop and Make paint your own pottery studio.

This week, the luxury shop announced that it was moving under the Toys R Us umbrella, thus saving it from financial distress. Do you have a family tradition or memory tied to FAO Schwarz?

It is always an exciting afternoon when the FAO Schwarz holiday catalog arrives. While I may still be planning my Halloween activities, it is never too early to sit down and thumb through the book of extravagant toys for children of all ages. This year's edition was filled with massive stuffed animals and a $10,000 military ATV, but what really caught my eye was the new Muppet Whatnot Workshop that is due to open next week.

You know the extra Muppets you see when watching Sesame Street or old versions of The Muppet Show on YouTube? The ones that are in the background and rarely have any big lines? Those are Whatnots and now you and your lil one can work together to create a custom puppet of your own. To see how the process works, and how much this creation will cost,

After choosing a body, eyes, nose and hair style, you can select the appropriate clothing and submit your design online. Approximately a month later, your personal Whatnot arrives in the mail. The kits ($130) will be sold exclusively through FAO Schwarz and include reusable stickers of each of the design options, as well as a gift card to cover the cost of the design, creation and shipping of your puppet.

While the price may sound a bit steep, the idea of having a Muppet of my own has me actually putting this on my holiday wish list.

Victoria Beckham Shows Baby Harper the Joys of NYC Shopping - For Toys!

Victoria Beckham carried her little girl, Harper Beckham, this afternoon when they went to browse for toys at NYC's FAO Schwarz. Harper was too cute in a headband and coat to check out the offerings at the famed store, as well as greet one of Victoria's friends near the checkout line. Posh tweeted about how Harper enjoyed seeing FAO's doll section and listening to story time. The girls rose early today, Victoria also shared on Twitter, so the mom of four could get to work. She was busy last night at a discussion event about fashion hosted by WWD. Across the pond in London, Victoria was also the talk of the town. Her Victoria Beckham Collection won at the Walpole Awards, taking home the best emerging British luxury brand honor.

Angelina Jolie took a break from promoting In the Land of Blood and Honey for a few hours today to spend the morning shopping with Brad Pitt and the kids, Shiloh, Pax, Zahara, Maddox, Knox, and Vivienne at NYC's famed toy store, FAO Schwarz. Angelina usually spends hours finding the perfect Christmas and birthday presents, but this time the kids were in charge of picking out their own gifts. Brad's parents, Bill and Jane, came out to support Angelina at the Monday night premiere of her film, but it seems they skipped this latest outing. Angelina's film opens in theaters at the end of the month and when she's done with her press tour, we'll see where the globe-trotting Jolie-Pitts decide to spend their Christmas and New Year's.

Tom and Suri Cruise left their Manhattan hotel today to run some afternoon errands. Suri seemed reluctant to cover up her colorful dress, but Tom brought along her red Dolce & Gabbana jacket just in case. The 6-year-old spent the last few days exploring the Big Apple with Katie, including a stop at FAO Schwarz, before Tom returned home yesterday. He racked up an impressive amount of frequent flier miles over the past few weeks traveling around the world promoting his latest blockbuster, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Tom made it back to the East Coast in time for Monday's stateside premiere of the film and, more importantly, Katie's 33rd birthday! Katie turns 33 on Sunday, but we'll have to wait and see if, like last year, she celebrates by seeing a Broadway production.

Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise paid a visit to NYC's FAO Schwarz yesterday. They're the latest Hollywood family to do some pre-holiday shopping at the famous toy store. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt took their six kids there, and it seems Suri and Katie couldn't leave without purchasing some candy. Katie and Suri have been on their own over the past two weeks while Tom Cruise toured the globe promoting latest film, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

Tom's travels took him to Asia, Europe, and most recently Rio for the South American screening. He returned to the States this morning and was dropped off in Manhattan via private helicopter. He'll have the next few days to relax with Katie and Suri prior to Monday's larger-than-life NYC premiere. It will be a friendly reunion for Tom and his costars Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, and Simon Pegg, and hopefully Katie will make a cameo appearance and snap a few photos with her husband on the red carpet. Fans of the Mission: Impossible franchise can get a sneak peek of the film prior to the movie's Dec. 21 release when it hits select IMAX theaters tomorrow.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt celebrated the latest screening of her film In the Land of Blood and Honey last night in LA with an afterparty at Boulevard 3, just down the street from the theater where the premiere was held. The intimate West Coast showing of her film drew Jolie-Pitt family friend Gwen Stefani and a select group of Hollywood powerplayers. The movie follows a love story that unfolds during the Serbian-Bosnian conflict of the '90s and is already generating major buzz for its intense and emotional portrayal of the war. The mood at the soiree was lighthearted, however, and Brad and Angelina stayed out until nearly midnight chatting with their premiere guests and friends - including Brad's Inglourious Basterds costar Eli Roth.

Angelina is on the current covers of The Hollywood Reporter, Newsweek, and Marie Claire and opened up about her filmmaking and family life for the magazines. The actress says her six children and partner Brad Pitt are the driving force in her life, and even in the midst of her promotional tour for her new project, she's been focusing much of her time on them. Earlier this week, Brad and Angie took the kids on a shopping trip at FAO Schwarz in NYC, and Angelina might have a fitting holiday gift of her own if In the Land of Blood and Honey performs well when it opens on Dec. 23.
