Having a baby is a big decision no matter how a couple goes about it, but do some methods take more thought than others? In last night's season premiere of Brothers & Sisters, Kevin and Scottie look into starting a family via surrogate and learn the best case scenario costs $137,000. While Kevin is ready to take out a credit line on their condo to get the process going, Scottie experiences cold feet reading hundreds of pages of paperwork. Surrogacy involves outside parties as well as legal contracts, so it's understandable that Scottie wants time to figure out if he's ready for fatherhood. You can pick your friends, but you can't choose your family, and maybe that's the greatest thing about having siblings. Whether you love them or not, they keep showing up at the dinner table and family functions. Having a sister, brother, or both forces a child to deal with peers on a daily basis. Sure, backseat wars have been waged and sibling rivalry exists, but the bonds that are formed wrestling each other over the television remote or laughing till your bellies ache are ones you can't replicate. As the second child of four who will soon give birth to my third baby, I believe that the greatest gift you can give your kid is another one - check out all my completely biased reasons why!

Multiples Multiply in NYC As Women Rush Into Motherhood

Twins are sometimes the result of older mothers and IVF, but in the Big Apple, impatient women who don't have fertility issues are rushing to clinics when the old fashioned way of conceiving takes too long. In a jaw dropping New York Post piece, mamas spoke out about "twofers", twins for the price of one round of fertility treatments and cutting down on their number of pregnancies and ability to get their pre-baby bod back by aspiring (via the doctor's office) for multiples. Since 1980, twin rates in America have increased 70 percent. It said:

"I have my body back," says a Gramercy Park mom with 3-year-old twin girls (who asked to remain anonymous to protect her family's privacy). "And while my friends are bracing themselves for baby number two and all the sleep deprivation and chaos that comes with it, we are planning a family trip to Hawaii."

Pregnant Woman Faces Forced Abortion of Her Third Child

In America, we have the freedom to reproduce at will, but in other countries that isn't the case. An Uyghur woman who is more than six months pregnant with her third child is facing a forced abortion. Chinese authorities are holding her in a hospital because she is only permitted two offspring. One report said:

China's one-child-per-family policy applies mainly to majority Han Chinese but allows ethnic minorities, including Uyghurs, to have additional children, with peasants permitted to have three children and city-dwellers two.

But while Tursun is a peasant, her husband, Nurmemet Tohtasin, is from the city of Gulja [in Chinese, Yining] so their status is unclear. The couple live with their two children in Bulaq village, Dadamtu township, in Gulja.

The couple is also subject to steep governmental fines. Do you think it's fair for the government to regulate a person's reproductive rights?

Whether a mama wants to start a family or finish one, the tick, tick, ticking of a biological clock after the age of 35 can seem deafening. Grey's Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo, 39, recently talked about having a baby to Allure. She said:

“It’s a huge lifestyle change, and I take that very seriously. We enjoy our life so much. We go to Europe and sleep in. So when I have the baby, I won’t feel like we’ve missed any fun, reckless times together, like staying up all night drinking champagne and having sex until five in the morning and not having to get up until two in the afternoon. But I’ve got to get on it, because the clock is ticking.”

Did Your Baby Numbers Align?

While dating, my husband and I agreed on the number of children we hoped to have.

But, what happens when a couple can't come to a consensus? Or, if spouses initially have the same plan and then one person has a change of heart?

Actress Brooke Shields made a recent comment that confronted this issue.

At the Prada Trembled Blossoms event, the mother of two, Rowan, 4, and Grier, almost 2, expressed her desire for a son. To see what she said, read more.

According to Us magazine, the actress's husband, Chris Henchy might put a halt to her hope. The article said:

"I'm going to have to convince him and he's a hard sell at this point," the Lipstick Jungle star, 42, said while laughing. "Maybe he likes the even number!"
