Did You Give Up All Your Vices When You Got Pregnant?

We all have our guilty pleasures, but when a new life comes into play, it's time to give them up . . . or so we thought. A recently released study from the Center For Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality was intended to evaluate the breakdown of substance use during pregnancy by race. But the outcome that shocks us most is that one in five women smoke while they're pregnant! Of those, Caucasian women are most likely to smoke, followed by black women, and then Hispanics.

When it comes to consuming alcohol, Caucasian and black women are about equally likely (12 percent) to imbibe during pregnancy, while Hispanic women are least likely.

Back in 2009, expectant mom Rebecca Gayheart caused a stir when she was spotted smoking, and in a more recent (and perhaps less extreme) example of pregnant celebs behaving badly, Kourtney Kardashian was seen with highlighted tresses. Now we're wondering . . . did you give up your bad habits when you were pregnant?

Non-Drinking Pregnant Woman Bounced From Bar

Bars may ban babies and strollers from their establishments, but should they ban a woman with child? In Roselle, IL, a bouncer seems to think so.

When an 8-month pregnant woman tried to enjoy a night out at a local bar with her friends (she was sipping water while her friends ordered shots), she was stopped by the bar's bouncer, who asked her if she was expecting. When she responded affirmatively, he proceeded to ask her to leave, explaining, "If anything happened to you here, we would be responsible."

Neither the state of Illinois, nor the town of Roselle, have ordinances regarding pregnant women, and the head of the National Organization for Women says she's not aware of any other similar incidents around the country. Fifty-six percent of LilSugar readers said they judge a pregnant woman they see drinking, but in this case, the mom-to-be was downing water. Do you think this is fair?

I've been at a few festivities lately where I've noticed very visibly pregnant women imbibing in a festive drink or two. While sixty percent of lilsugar readers said you wouldn't take a chance by drinking while expecting, do you judge mamas-to-be who do?

Buy Into the Study That Says Booze Is Better For Baby Boys?

A recent British study found that pregnant women who indulged in one or two drinks per week while expecting their sons had better behaved boys. It said:

Boys born to mothers who drank lightly were 40% less likely to have conduct problems and 30% less likely to be hyperactive, even when the differences between social and economic circumstances were taken into account. They also scored more highly in vocabulary tests and were better able to identify shapes, colours, letters and numbers.

Do you buy into this theory?

Have Your Beer and Drink it, Too

During pregnancy, women often choose to give up things they love - deli meats, goat cheese salads and sushi to name a few. While most mamas-to-be ban alcohol from their prenatal diet, others allow themselves to indulge every now and again.

Enjoying a Dodgers game in L.A., Matthew McConaughey and his baby mama Camila Alves soaked up some sun and sipped on what appears to be a brewsky. Reportedly nearing her due date, I'd say she's safe to have her beer and sip it, too. What's your opinion?

Did You Drink While Pregnant?

The Office of the Surgeon General has long cautioned expectant women about drinking. It released this statement in 2005.

"We must prevent all injury and illness that is preventable in society, and alcohol-related birth defects are completely preventable," Dr. Carmona said. "We do not know what, if any, amount of alcohol is safe. But we do know that the risk of a baby being born with any of the fetal alcohol spectrum disorders increases with the amount of alcohol a pregnant woman drinks, as does the likely severity of the condition. And when a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, so does her baby. Therefore, it's in the child's best interest for a pregnant woman to simply not drink alcohol."

Still many pregnant women drink. While with child, did you indulge or err on the side of caution?

Drew Barrymore Preps For a Wedding - and a New Wine

Drew Barrymore took her drink to go while out in Santa Monica yesterday with a friend. Later, Drew dressed up for a photo shoot at the Huntington Library in San Marino. The actress is hanging out on the West Coast with her pals and fiancé Will Kopelman. It's been reported that Drew Barrymore is pregnant, though she has yet to officially confirm the news. In recent weeks, however, Drew has taken to donning looser clothes and yesterday, she wore a big jacket over a tee. Drew may have picked a fancier ensemble for her upcoming wedding. It's rumored that Drew and Will are set to tie the knot at her Montecito home in early June.

In addition to planning her big day and possibly for a baby, Drew Barrymore's entered the wine business. She will launch Barrymore Pinot Grigio in the coming weeks. The grapes are grown in Northern Italy, which may explain her and Will's frequent excursions to Europe over the past year. The 2011 vintage even nabbed a gold medal at France’s largest international wine competition. The label on her Barrymore wines was designed by Shepard Fairey.

New Girl's Max Greenfield Talks Schmidt and Cece and Says True American Is a Real Game

Max Greenfield plays Schmidt on New Girl, a character that has a tendency to be materialistic, inappropriate, shirtless at any given moment. He can also be a sweetheart, thanks to Greenfield's funny, careful portrayal of him. I recently chatted with Greenfield while he was promoting Zevia, an all natural soda with no artificial sweeteners. Zevia has launched a campaign against artificiality, and they chose Greenfield to work with since he's a person who says what's on his mind and, like Schmidt, isn't afraid to be real. With that in mind, Greenfield and I chatted about when Schmidt is being the most real, the relationship between Schmidt and Cece, the sexual tension between Nick and Jess, and how real the show's drinking game True American is.

BuzzSugar: When is Schmidt being the most real?
Max Greenfield: I honestly think he's never not being himself. And that's his best quality and his biggest fault. He's always being real. Sometimes it would be nice if he had a filter every so often.

Buzz: Do you feel pressure to work out because you know shirtless scenes are coming?
MG: Uh, would you? It's terrifying! I'm not one of these guys who's just like, "Yeah I'm ripped. I can eat whatever." I work out so hard. And I work out really hard to get to a decent point. But so easily I could go off and go on a three, four day bender where I'm just throwin' down cookies, bread, sandwiches, and at the end of four days, you're like, "Oh yeah, I can see a significant difference."

Buzz: You also have to wear stuff like tiny bike shorts; do you ever get resentful when you see your costars Jake Johnson and Lamorne Morris wearing jeans and t-shirts?
MG: I don't get resentful toward them. I get resentful every once in a while toward the writers, just because sometimes it's like, "Really, guys?" I'd just like to know this is happening. They're on set and they're watching it, they can see everything. They have seen everything. Our showrunners, and our crew, and everybody else, has seen everything.

Drew Barrymore Gets Back to Business Following Her Couple's Shower

Drew Barrymore stopped by her LA office with a drink in hand yesterday. She was covering her possible baby bump in a long coat, much like the oversize look she stepped out in while running errands with fiancé Will Kopelman last week. The couple had an exciting weekend since their friends reportedly threw them a joint wedding and baby shower. It's just the beginning of the fun for Drew and Will, who are apparently planning a Summer wedding. The excitement will continue when they welcome their first child later this year if rumors that Drew is pregnant hold true.

HBO's Girls Tackles Abortion

Last night was the second episode of Lena Dunham's new HBO show Girls, and the entire plot of the episode - fittingly titled "Vagina Panic" - centered around Jessa's impending abortion. Jessa dropped the bomb at the end of the Girls premiere that she was back in New York because she was pregnant, so it was a bold move to start off the second episode with Hannah announcing matter-of-factly that her day's activities included taking Jessa to the abortion clinic. When Hannah tells her "boyfriend" that she doesn't know if abortions should be a big deal, he accuses her of being too blasé regarding them (which is ironic, since he doesn't take things like condoms and STDs seriously). And later Jessa tries to blow off the procedure when talking to Hannah, but when she brings up how she wants kids in the future and how she'll be a great mom some day, it's clear that she's more nervous about it than she wants her friends to know she is. She even avoids the procedure altogether by having a drink at the bar (and hooking up with a guy) while all her friends are waiting for her in the clinic. When Marnie is upset that Jessa is late to her own abortion, Hannah quips with "How could she ruin the beautiful abortion you threw?" But Marnie chides Hannah for taking it too lightly, saying, "it's about the most traumatic thing that could ever happen to a woman."

I thought the episode did a good job of showing how the different characters processed the implications of both having an abortion and becoming a mom, while struggling with just how big of a deal it really is for women. They voiced some of the concerns many young women today have when it comes to our choices about having kids. Like when Jessa said, "I don't like women telling other women what to do or how to do it or when to do it. Every time I have sex, it's my choice." While it's important for women to honestly open up about abortion, there is a fine line between getting the dialogue going and joking about serious issues, like when Sarah Silverman apologized last week for her abortion joke. Did you think Girls handled the abortion issue well?
