Documentary Explores Why All Children Deserve a Chance

All they need is love? The British documentary Hold Me Tight, Let Me Go airs tonight on PBS, taking a yearlong look at the the Mulberry Bush School in Oxford, England, where 40 emotionally disturbed children board. The three-year program centers on patience and kind human interaction as a last resort for these youngsters. According to the summary:

The kids ages five through 12 who attend Mulberry (most of them boys) can broadly be described as having attachment disorders, with some having Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD).

More than 100 dedicated staffers tend to the students, offering them love, support, and structure. The institution exemplifies the notion that every child deserves a chance. Will you tune in?

What Is the Appropriate Age to Leave Kids in Car?

I ran into the grocery store for a few items over the weekend. While exiting with my kids, I noticed a baby in the backseat of a vehicle and did a double take since there were no passengers in the front of the parked car. The child looked to be about a year old and was sound asleep. Upon closer inspection, I saw that there was another little girl seated next to him reading a book. Though she was small, I figured she was about seven or eight-years-old since she was engrossed in a thick paperback.

The SUV was packed with presents and a few balloons as if the family was headed to a party, the sun roof was cracked, the doors were locked and the youngsters looked well cared for, but I still worried about them being left in the car alone. Though there is much debate and even laws in certain states about latchkey kids and when it's alright to leave children home alone, when is it appropriate to let them sit unattended in the car?

The Custody of Michael Jackson's Kids in Question

The death of American icon Michael Jackson has rocked the world. The man known for his single glove, moonwalk, and videos was a musical legend. While fans and famous friends of the musician mourn, those most affected by the 50-year-old's passing are his children - Prince Michael Jr., 12, daughter Paris Katherine, 11, and Prince Michael II, 7. The kids have spent their lives sheltered from the public often out sporting veils, masks, and blankets to shield their identities. Now in the wake of their father's death, who will care for the youngsters?

Prince Michael and Paris Katherine's mother, Debbie Rowe, was once married to Jackson and petitioned for custody, but the children have always lived with their dad. The surrogate mom of Prince Michael II was never made public. One report said that the singer's wish was to have his longtime confident and the children's nanny, Grace Rwaramba, raise them if something were to happen. Meanwhile it is said that Jackson's parents, Joe and Katherine, have also expressed interest in adopting their grandchildren. But, given the late king of pop was very public about his tumultuous relationship with his father, this may be unlikely. Hopefully, all involved will put the children's interests first and help them through this tragedy.

Taser Your Child at Work Day: Prison Officials Placed on Leave

Take Your Child to Work Day gives parents an opportunity to show their children what they do on a daily basis and open their youngsters' minds about their own futures. But, it appears five Florida state prison authorities had a different idea when it came to showing kids the occupational ropes - the workers allegedly used a stun gun on visiting youth. Children between the ages of eight and fourteen were tased on April 23 while at Martin Correctional Facility. Those accused of shocking the youth have been placed on paid administration leave pending the investigation. The report did not say if the case involves parents and their offspring.

She coauthored the text with Evan's pediatrician, Dr. Jerry Kartzinel, who also has a son with autism.

In the Motherhood: Is 8 p.m. an Appropriate Time to Out Santa?

Last night, I couldn't wait to tune into what likely will be ABC's new hit, In the Motherhood. But, before I could settle into my seat, Santa was outed. Moments into the premiere, Emily told her two young children - Esther and Bill - that St. Nick was a charade. It was a funny story line and one many mothers can relate to, but my 5-year-old daughter was in the hall and overheard. Luckily she assumed the character on television was just tricking her children, but lots of youngsters, particularly those ages 6, 7, 8 and 9, who still believe in Santa are still awake at that hour. Do you think 8 p.m. is appropriate time to announce the truth over the boob tube?

You Know You're a Mother When: Jaywalking

I used to zigzag through downtown streets as cars whizzed by without a worry in the world. Now, I can't bring my heels from holding the curb during red lights - even when oncoming traffic is more than a few feet away. Usually, I wait until the light flashes for pedestrians and proceed between the lines of the crosswalk. My single friends tease me that I'm a shell of who I once was, playing it safe, wasting time in the hustle and bustle of life. But, I can't bring myself to dash any more because I am more careful - I'm a mom. And, I can't get run over because my husband hasn't figured out how to style our daughter's hair and my son sometimes wakes up and needs me in the middle of the night.

I remember being in school and watching our nation's leaders take their oaths of office on the classroom television. Both my children were born during former President Bush's second term so Barack Obama is the first newly elected president they will know. I stayed home to watch his inauguration with my son, 2, and daughter, 4. As an adult, it's amazing to watch history being made and for my kids, this is just the incredible world they will grow up in.
