Abigail Breslin: Top Role Model for Lil Girls

If you've seen Little Miss Sunshine, you'll understand my obsession with the positively charming Abigail Breslin.

The extraordinarily talented actress has mad acting skills that are sure to take her far in Tinseltown. More importantly, she seems to have a good head on her small shoulders.

A breath of fresh air from other young actresses, Abigail wore what any typical 11–year–old (soon to be 12) girl would on a Wednesday afternoon – a red polka–dot dress over a graphic tee paired with some comfy cute flip flops.

Even as she was inducted into The Girl Scouts of the USA as an honorary member, she couldn't be swayed to lap on make–up or sport an overdone dress.

Movie Night: There Are No Small Parts...

...only small actors. My heart always melts a little when a child actor gets nominated for an Oscar - most recently, Abigail Breslin for Little Miss Sunshine. In some ways, it seems easy to get kids to "act," since they are already impressionable and connected with their emotions. In 1944's Meet Me In St. Louis, the director told young Margaret O'Brien that her dog had died to make her cry so Judy Garland could comfort her by singing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas."

Surely directors have all sorts of tricks to get child stars to cooperate, but when a kid's got it, she's got it - no trickery necessary. Thus, the inspiration for this week's Movie Night: Oscar nominees in miniature.

Paper Moon
As a tiny scam artist in training, Tatum O'Neal steals this movie right out from under her real-life dad, Ryan O'Neal. For her trouble, she took home the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. The expertly crafted Peter Bogdanovich dramedy, set in the 1930s, follows a con-man who enlists O'Neal the younger in a Bible-selling scheme. The scenes between the cigarette-smoking 10-year-old and Madeline Kahn as Ryan O'Neal's lady friend are nothing short of brilliant.

The Piano
Anna Paquin followed in O'Neal's footsteps by earning the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as young Flora McGrath. Set in 1851, Holly Hunter plays Flora's mother Ada, a mute Scottish expatriate who arrives in New Zealand in an arranged marriage to a wealthy landowner. When her husband sells her beloved piano to a neighbor, Ada reluctantly strikes a deal with the neighbor (Harvey Keitel) in order to continue playing it. Their relationship soon progresses beyond piano lessons, however, and Ada finds herself in a dangerous situation.

Whale Rider
When Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role, someone at the ceremony asked her which actor she would most like to meet. She said shyly, in her adorable New Zealand accent, "Johnny Depp." So the sweet, sexy man actually went and sat next to Keisha and chatted her up a bit. I think I cried watching that as much as I did during Whale Rider! In the movie, Castle-Hughes plays Pai, a member of a New Zealand tribe whose chiefs are considered direct descendants of Paikea, an ancestor whose life was spared when he rode to shore on the back of a whale. Pai's twin brother, who died at birth, would have been the chief, and Pai believes she is destined to inherit the position instead. Her grandfather Koro, whom she adores, is bound by tradition to choose a male chief, so Pai sets out to prove her worth.

The Dictator: Ruled by Tasteless but Funny Jokes

Full disclosure: I laughed out loud many times during The Dictator, knowing full well that I should have been offended instead. But what you see is what you get when it comes to Sacha Baron Cohen, and after movies like Bruno and Borat, you already know whether you'll be able to find humor in film about a horrifyingly ignorant world leader who's as naive, racist, and prejudiced as they come.

I know that sounds hard to swallow, but there is a big difference between The Dictator and Cohen's previous work: this time, it doesn't even feel remotely real. Whereas Borat and Bruno are made to taunt and embarrass what appear to be unsuspecting, everyday people, there's no mistaking The Dictator for what it is: a total farce that comes complete with actors you've seen before. It may sound obvious, but having Cohen's Aladeen interact with the likes of Ben Kingsley, Anna Faris, and John C. Reilly makes the whole story easier to digest - and much easier to laugh at in spite of yourself.

At the core, The Dictator is really a fish-out-of water comedy, just taken to staggeringly inappropriate levels. Aladeen has ruled his North African country, Wadiya, since he was a small child, and in many ways, he's never grown up. While he's busy ordering execution for anyone that rubs him the wrong way (including the engineer that couldn't make his nuclear weapon pointy enough), his uncle Tamir (Kingsley) is the one that's really making the decisions about how the country should be run. Predictably, Tamir turns on Aladeen and seizes power during a trip to NYC, leaving Aladeen lost, penniless, and unrecognizable on the streets of the Big Apple.

The Dictator then turns into a bizarre romantic comedy, as Aladeen befriends a crunchy protester named Chloe (Anna Faris), who he initially mistakes for a boy. Chloe gives Aladeen his first job in her organic whole foods store, which opens a Pandora's box of jokes about the irony of a world leader wearing a hairnet. Meanwhile, Aladeen hatches a plan to bring down his uncle, and somewhere along the way, you start rooting for the same guy that suggests aborting a baby because it's not a boy.

I'm not saying that The Dictator is sophisticated by any means, or even groundbreaking as a comedy. Cohen spares us no expense of crude humor that pushes the envelope (and literally takes us inside a woman's birth canal), and if you're not a fan for Cohen's brand of humor, you'll probably walk out of the theater before you even get there. But if you've ever found his antics to be funny before, chances are you will again - even if you're slightly embarrassed to admit it when the credits roll.

Channing Tatum and His Magic Mike Costars Go Shirtless For EW

The stars of Magic Mike will show the world their strippin' moves when the film hits theaters in June, and a handful of the guys are giving us a sneak peek on this week's cover of Entertainment Weekly. Leading man Channing Tatum is joined by costars Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, and Matt Bomer for a hot photo shoot, and of course, an interview. Once you're done ogling the eye candy, here are a few highlights from the interview:

Tatum on the vibe on set: "Actors, generally, if we finish our scenes early one day, we go home. It wasn't like that on this set. Especially during the dances - we were there cheering everybody on."
Tatum on McConaughey getting his thong ripped off by rowdy fans: "It was a collection of women being like, 'I have to tip him,' and then the weight of all the dollar bills in their hands just took [his thong] off."
Manganiello on how True Blood prepped him: "When I came in for a meeting with the casting director, she hadn't seen True Blood. So she said, 'Are you going to be comfortable with partial nudity?' And I go, 'Have you seen my show? I'm the poster child for that.'"

Tom Cruise on His Beautiful, Creative Wife and Growing Up Without His Dad Around

Tom Cruise chatted with Playboy about his new movie Rock of Ages, but the conversation between the actor and interviewer Michael Fleming got quite personal. No stranger to promoting movies, Tom is happy to discuss his career and ambitions, but rarely talks about his childhood. However, in Playboy, Tom gave a great deal of insight about growing up with his mom and sisters, but not his dad. Tom also spoke about the tough career time he went through in 2005 after PR-unwise interviews on the Today show and Oprah. Tom additionally had nothing but kind words to say about his wife Katie Holmes and their family. Here are highlights:

On loving Katie: "She is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you'd see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity. When she becomes interested in something, she doesn't talk about it, she does it. One week I said to her, 'You've been up in the middle of the night. Is everything okay?' She smiled and then threw this thing on my desk and said, 'I wrote this script.' She wanted to try it, and she did. She wanted to try designing clothes, and now her line is wonderful and, to me, an example of how she just creates beautiful things in her life. She has a voice and warmth as an artist, as a mother. She's funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better. I’m a romantic. I like doing things like creating romantic dinners, and she enjoys that. I don't know what to say - I'm just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special."
On growing up without his dad around: "It wasn't a big conflict when I was growing up; that's just the way it was. I don't look back and feel bad. I know some people do, but it's not a burden I carry through life. It's more like, OK, this happened. That's how he behaved, that's how he did things. He tried, but it just was who he was. Traveling has given me a broader understanding of people, and I've always been interested in the similarities we have and why people make certain choices in life. I got an introduction to that as a young child, but it never felt like a weight I carried on my shoulders."
On how he looks so young: "I honestly have no idea. [laughs] I work. I'm always with family. I train, go without sleep. I just go hard."

The Lucky One: Take This Schmaltz

The premise of The Lucky One is a little convoluted, but the basics of the story are not: boy meets girl, they fall for each other, and then must overcome some obstacle to be together. If that simple formula is enough for you, you'll enjoy watching the romantic drama, but if you're looking for more than a cheesy love story, you won't find it here.

Zac Efron stars as Logan, a former marine who avoids death a couple of times in combat, and attributes his survival to a good luck charm: a photograph he found in the rubble. When he returns home from overseas, he's determined to find the woman in the picture to thank her. After walking for days across several states, he reaches his destination and finds the woman, Beth (Taylor Schilling), a single mom who runs a dog kennel. Tongue-tied, Logan fails to tell Beth why he's there, and instead accepts a job working for her. As they get to know each other, Beth and Logan slowly fall for each other, but Logan keeps his secret under wraps, to the point that it threatens their relationship. The fact that a secret about a picture is what builds suspense in the film is more than a little silly, but Efron makes up for in eye candy what the movie lacks in substance.

The Avengers Bring Their Superpowers to London

Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., and the rest of the all-star Avengers cast stepped out in London tonight for the UK premiere. The actors are making their way around the globe prior to the May 4 US release of the action adventure. We were on hand for the LA debut last week, and since then, Scarlett, RDJ, and the rest of the celebs have been on the road talking up their larger-than-life flick. It was a special evening for dad-to-be Chris Hemsworth, who was joined by his Hoss Intropia-clad wife, Elsa Pataky. The couple are expecting their first child this Summer, though they've decided to keep the baby's gender a secret. Robert might be able to give Chris some parenting tips - RDJ and his wife, Susan, welcomed son Exton in February.

Scarlett opted to break away from the sexy LBDs she's been wearing and instead chose a floral embroidered Prada frock. Scarlett was the only female cast member to make the trek to Moscow for the Avengers screening, but tonight she was joined by her partner in fighting crime, Cobie Smulders. Cobie dazzled in a form-fitted, floor-length Alexandra Vidal red gown.
