In Motherhood, which comes out today, Uma Thurman plays Eliza, a Manhattan stay-at-home mom of two who is planning her daughter's sixth birthday party while trying to finish a parenting magazine contest entry on the topic "What does motherhood mean to you?" Spanking is so passé... or at least that's what the experts will have you believe. Contrary to mom's lil saying, it turns out that a little paddling may hurt the kid more than it hurts the mom.

First day jitters are nothing new. As adults we experience them when we start a new job, move to a new city or go on a first date. For children who don't know any better, nerves can be scary.

Just as the swine flu was making headlines and putting fear into the hearts of parents around the world, the 2008 school year came to an end. Moms and dads rested easy for a few months as their wee ones avoided classmates sneezing and coughing throughout the day. But class is back in session and the germs are still afloat.
