Thirty-one percent of American women go under the knife to deliver their bundles of joy. While some mamas choose the procedure, others have the decision made for them due to complications or the babe or mother's well being. The stigmas attached to not having a vaginal birth can range from guilt to inadequacy, but there are many benefits to having a c-section, and some veteran mothers would even argue that the procedure is preferable.

The hospital trip is a bit different when you're having a scheduled delivery. With 29 percent of all American births coming via c-section, many mamas to be know they are going in for surgery. Whether the cesarean was deemed necessary for medical reasons or if the mama-to-be insisted on it, women who know they will be undergoing the knife need to pack a little differently than those delivering vaginally.

A new study of American births shows that babies do best when they debut no earlier than seven days before their due date. Even a few days can make a difference in the child's lung development.

There's much focus on home births and cesarean sections these days so many women are unaware of labor induction until their doctors suggest it. According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, in 2005 the rate of induction of labor was 22.3 percent. That is double the number of inductions conducted in 1990.
