For the first time in history, the French presidential palace is hearing the pitter-patter of baby feet! Carla Bruni and Nicolas Sarkozy welcomed a daughter at a private clinic in Paris this evening. The baby is the first for the couple - the couple each have children from previous relationships: Carla's son Aurelien, 10, and Nicolas's children Pierre, 26, Jean, 25, and Louis, 14 - and is also the first baby born to a sitting French president. We admired the French first lady's buttoned-up maternity style as she went about her official government business, as well as her bikini style while on vacation. We can't wait to see the first daughter's sure-to-be impeccable style now! Congratulations!

Should Parents Be the Ones to Announce Baby's Debut to Other Children?

It's a boy or it's a girl, but who should tell the new addition's siblings? If mom and dad are in the midst of all the new baby bliss and hospital (or home birth) hoopla, is it the job of an outside party - a grandparent or family friend - to inform the big brother or sister? Some parents are particular in how they want to debut the news and others just believe in letting the information spread. What's your opinion?

The Travoltas are having a blue Thanksgiving after welcoming a baby boy last night! Kelly Preston, 48, gave birth to 8 lbs., 3 oz. baby Benjamin in a Florida hospital. The couple, who announced that they were expecting a year after the devastating loss of their 16-year-old son, Jett, said in a statement:

John, Kelly and their daughter Ella Bleu are ecstatic and very happy about the newest member of the family. Both mother and baby are healthy and doing beautifully.

Congratulations to the entire family!

Obama Compromises on Contraception

Despite the fact that 99 percent of women who have ever had sex - religious or not - have used contraception, the Obama administration's decision to make birth control free under all employer health insurance packages has caused a controversy. Today, the White House announced that it will make a change to its new policy to accommodate religious institutions, such as Catholic hospitals and universities, who do not want to cover prescriptions like the pill. Under the compromise, religious employers would not have to offer free birth control. Rather, insurance companies themselves would have to provide free contraception to workers at religiously sponsored institutions if the worker requests it.

The original policy, similar to laws that already exist in states like California and Oregon, would have required groups affiliated with religious institutions, like hospitals, charities, and universities, to provide insurance plans that cover birth control for free. Churches themselves would be exempt. But some religions, like the Catholic Church, oppose all forms of birth control, and leaders, especially the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, put pressure on the White House to change course, threatening to make this a major campaign issue.

So far, it looks like the compromise has pleased both sides. Planned Parenthood's President Cecile Richards said it "does not compromise a woman's ability to access this critical birth control benefits," and Sister Carol Keehan, the president of the Catholic Health Association of the United States, says she is "pleased and grateful that the religious liberty and conscience protection needs of so many ministries that serve our country were appreciated."
