Mommy Dearest: In-Laws Call Baby by Another Name

Mommy Dearest,

My husband and I put a lot of time into choosing our children's names. We have two boys: Matthew, 3, and August, who is 3 months old. We named our younger son for the month he was born and my in-laws have made it clear that they are not fans of the choice. That doesn't bother me, but the fact that they only refer to our baby by his middle name does. If we wanted his name to be Michael, we would have put that first on the birth certificate. What's more annoying is the fact that it is confusing our older son. Matthew doesn't understand why Grammy and Papa call August "Michael." How can I tell my in-laws to knock it off?

As parents, you and your husband have the right to name your children whatever you choose. While your in-laws don't have to agree with the moniker, it is not their place to make up a new one for your son. Not only is it rude, but it is confusing your older boy. Politely explain this and tell them that you don't want them calling August "Michael" anymore. It's better to confront this issue now rather than later, if and when your lil guy starts responding to both names.

Lots of women think labor is easy compared to choosing their child's name. While selecting a moniker for the first mini me can be easy for parents, many have a hard time coming up with a comparable one for their second or third offspring. My husband and I had to consider both our son and daughter's names when we decided on the options for our baby-to-be. We know moms and dads who were troubled by the fact they didn't love other names as much as those they had already given their offspring and wanted them to be equal. Does it matter if parents are more passionate about one child's name than another?

I'm going to be bold and assume that Bronx Mowgli was not on Jessica Simpson's short list of names for her future children. I'll also go out on a limb and speculate that Angelina and Brad won't call a hypothetical seventh child Jennifer. But would it be inappropriate for Courteney Cox and David Arquette to have a son and name the baby Brad? It's one thing to rule out your own ex when it comes to naming a baby, but what about a best friend's old beau? Parents trying to choose a name for their newest family member often cross names off a list due to past relationships, tainted associations, or fear of namenapping. While there seem to be a few general rules that parents-to-be should stick to when brainstorming baby names, many pay no attention and use the moniker they like best regardless of their peers' feelings or input.

Can't decide what to call your impending babe? Put its naming rights up for auction on eBay! That's what an unemployed Arkansas mother of six is doing for her seventh baby.

With her husband in the Navy and stationed hundreds of miles away, and her financial troubles growing, Lavonne Drummond placed the ad on Sunday to raise money to "pay for a new car (one that can fit my BIG family) some baby cloths, and maybe if some one is generious [sic] enough a new house. but we are despritly [sic] in need of a new car."

The winning bidder will pick the legal first name for her son and meet him after he is born on Sept. 16. With just three days left in the auction, Drummond is a long way from the $25,000 she hopes to raise, but a flood of traffic on the site has raised the current bid to $2,550.

Giving baby an unusual moniker seems to be the trend, especially in Hollywood. Unfortunately for the boy's camp, the exchange rate is poor. The female list of names continues to grow as more masculine titles have jumped ship to the feminine side with the ladies reciprocating very little. Just think, have you ever met a boy named Katherine or Elizabeth? Probably not, but chances are you've known a pretty Alex or Andy. Selecting your lil one's moniker can take the entire nine months of your pregnancy. Finding a name you and your spouse like that isn't being used by your friends or relatives is enough to send many mamas-to-be over the edge.

For some families, the process is made a bit easier by tradition. From adding a third, fourth or fifth to a long line of namesakes to naming a child after a close friend or relative. In Jewish tradition, names are given to honor family members, traditionally deceased relatives. Recent generations have modified the custom by using the first letter of the relative's name for their baby, such as taking the "S" from Sadie and naming their daughter Sabrina. In doing so, the family can remember a loved one on a daily basis.
