Babysugar Diaries: I Ate It (and I Don't Mean Food)

Pregnancy often brings clumsiness along with it. I try my best to avoid precarious situations, but sometimes my body does its own thing. While flats typically make my legs look short and stubby, they usually afford me a level of comfort and agility.

The other day I sported a new pair of bright blue ballet flats to work and was feeling quite agile for a woman entering her last trimester. As I made my way down the San Francisco hills, I stepped on the smooth surface of an electrical cover and completely ate it. Both feet flew out from under me leaving my tush and hands to break the fall. Humiliated of course, I slowly pulled myself together and gingerly walked the rest of the way to the bus stop. Luckily, I got a seat and was able to lick my wounds.

I refuse to wear sneakers with a dress, but I'm not sure what other footwear would work if my flats aren't doing the trick. Combat boots?

Tell Mommy: Your Kid's Craziest Accident

Let's face it, kids have lots of fluids and well, sometimes they end up all over the floor. While the incidents can be funny in retrospect, they usually aren't while occurring. My husband packed our infant daughter in the Baby Bjorn and stopped in an upscale art gallery to take a peek at their pieces. The sales clerks cooed over our child until she projectile vomited all over the shop. Mortified, her daddy apologized profusely to the staffers who were awed by her action.
My son's moment came last Christmas while I was carting the kids through the rain and into the mall only to notice he had an accident that soiled ALL of his clothing. I couldn't put my baby back in the car, so I headed to Target's restroom where I had no choice but to strip him down, wipe the mess up as best as I could and then rinse him off in the sink. Once he was clean, I put him in a fresh diaper, strapped him in the stroller and dressed him in a new outfit I bought at the store. Then, we finished our holiday shopping.

When kiddie accidents happen, parents have to grin and bear it - what was yours?

Lil Tip: Car Safety

If your kids aren't in the car, make sure you designate a spot in front of the garage or driveway where they should stand when a vehicle approaches. While growing up, it was an automatic for my siblings and me to wait on the landing in our garage when a car was pulling in or out. And today with more and more parents driving SUVs, the likelihood of a tot getting stuck in a blindspot increases.

As protective parents, we should take note of Christian singer Steven Curtis Chapman's recent tragedy. His 5-year-old daughter, Maria was killed this week when his teenage son accidentally hit the child while driving outside their home. I make a habit of having my kids hop in the car anytime my husband or I pull out of the driveway regardless of whether or not they are coming on the excursion. It takes a few extra minutes to buckle them in, but grants piece of mind.

Caution For Croc-Wearing Kids

Plastic clogs have become a fast favorite of lil kids and their parents who love the convenience of the slip-on shoes, but wearers should take caution.

A New York Times health blog stated that escalator accidents involving the nonskid shoes getting caught in front of or on the sides of the moving steps were reported in Japan and across the nation. It said:

Closer to home, local television stations and bloggers also have reported on several escalator injuries to kids who were wearing Crocs. In August, the blog Wisebread ran pictures of a mangled Croc shoe and a little girl’s bloodied toes, both allegedly the aftermath of an escalator accident. And one website, CrocsAccidents, is devoted entirely to injuries that occur while kids are wearing Crocs.

What's the Worst Thing You've Blamed on Your Child?

People rarely probe moms when they bail on commitments because nobody wants to question a sick infant or an unreliable sitter. A believer in karma, I don't much like to falsely lay blame for fear it will come back to bite me and it's just not the right thing to do. I've faulted my daughter for a messy room or running late, but one New Hampshire papa took his problems a tad too far.

After allegedly being involved in a hit-and-run accident, David Ponzer told police that his 19-year-old son might have been driving his car at the time of the incident. Mr. Ponzer assured the officers that he would have his son call them upon his return home. On their way to the squad car, the policemen saw a neighbor and asked them if they had seen the young man behind the wheel of the vehicle recently. Officer Christopher Kiberd wrote in an affidavit, "The subject laughed and informed me Ponzer's son is still an infant." I guess that would make driving a get-away car impossible! Daddy David is now in the hot seat for his involvement in the accident and lying to authorities.

Has Your Child Ever Had a Close Call?

An Australian mom had the scare of her life recently when her stroller, which was holding her 6-month old baby, rolled off a platform onto train tracks and was hit by an oncoming train. Miraculously, the baby was not hurt and only ended up with a bump on his head. The accident took no more than a few seconds, but it leaves an image that will last a lifetime. Most every mother has had a close call that makes her heart jump to her throat: losing a lil one at the mall, jumping in after a sinking child in the pool, or dislodging a hot dog from a toddler's throat.

Fortunately the train accident is rare and provides another reminder that parents can never be too careful. Despite your best efforts, has your child ever had a close call?

When Did Your Lil One Lose Her First Tooth?

The tune "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" may have a special meaning for Shiloh Jolie-Pitt this holiday season. When the 3-year-old beauty was spotted visiting a toy store in France, she was sporting a rather authentic-looking pirate costume - including a missing front tooth.

The tooth fairy doesn't tend to start visiting lil ones until they reach the ripe old age of 6, though some get a visit up to two years earlier. According to doctors, teeth tend to fall out in the same order in which they appear, with the front two bottom teeth falling out first, followed by the top two. When a wee one loses a tooth before its usual time - either due to an accident or tooth decay - they don't usually rush off to the dentist in search of a veneer or bridge like their parents do. Instead they must wait until the permanent tooth grows in, often a few years later.

Brad and Angie's little blondie will likely be flashing her gap-toothed smile for a few years now. When did your youngster lose her first tooth?

Parents to Be Prosecuted For Accidental Co-Sleeping Deaths?

Lawmakers discuss a wake-up call for co-sleeping parents. Prosecutors around the country are weighing the possibility of charging parents who accidentally "roll-over" their tots while drunk or high with child-neglect. According to the Wall Street Journal, an Oregon district attorney "has drawn a fairly hard line on bed-sharing death cases: He will prosecute them when they involve alcohol or drugs."

An Indiana father was charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death and faces up to 50 years in jail after smothering his son when the man fell sleep on a sofa after using methamphetamine and smoking marijuana. Fifty-four percent of lilsugar readers said that though studies showed a marked increase in infant suffocation tied to bed sharing, it didn't change their minds about the practice. Unlicensed to Drive: Three-Year-Old Crashes SUV

The next time your tot says he's going for a ride, don't take it too lightly. A three-year-old Missouri boy who could barely see over the dashboard let alone reach the pedals, took his mama's SUV for a short and unintentional joyride or rather, joy roll. According to a report, when the mother's dismissal of her son's passing words had a smashing outcome. It said:

After telling his mother he was “going bye-bye,” the boy carried the SUV’s keys to the vehicle and evidently turned the ignition key far enough to allow the vehicle’s transmission to slip into neutral.

The car rolled backward until it hit a fence and neighboring home.
