The Pull Present

Okay, so the father doesn't actually pull the baby out per se, but he's often there to mentally coax mama along as she pushes the baby into the world. It has become common practice in recent years for men to bestow a gift upon their wives for birthing their child. Whether it's a card, balloons, roses, or a diamond tennis bracelet, it's nice to be recognized for nine months of hard work. When I had my first child, I gave my husband a lil something to thank him for all of his coaching, attention to detail and concern during my childbearing months. The Gifted Dad

Why are dads always so tough to shop for? I feel like I give mine the same things year after year - boring books, lame slippers, and a nose hair trimmer.

All of this for a man who taught me to ride a bike, put me through college, and endured my teenage tantrums. This year, dad is going to like his presents - love them even!

Most dads shave, even if it's just a trim. And, shaving with disposable razors and gel foam is a thing of the past. Men like to be pampered, too. Give your dad a gift set from The Art of Shaving. He will wonder why he's been a prisoner to the cheap stuff for so long.

Show us a dad who doesn't engage in any sport and we'll say, "Liar! Liar!" But really, most men have an affection for one sport or another. Sports Authority is a major chain across America that has everything from golf balls to archery supplies. Treat dad to a piece of equipment or better yet, get him a gift card and let him do the picking.
If your dad always reads newspapers and his old standard magazines, surprise him with a subscription to Vanity Fair. He'll thank you for ensuring he's up to speed on all the latest in politics, news and entertainment.
Whether he's a gym rat, a tennis pro, or a Sunday afternoon walker, dad will like listening to tunes on the go. He may not need the full kit and caboodle but get him started with the iPod Shuffle from Apple. He can listen to Motown and get groovin' on the treadmill.
And while he won't need these for his workouts, if dad's a traveling man, these will come in handy for plane rides. Bose makes the ultimate noise canceling head phones that will block out any crying babies, chatty neighbors, or clanging flight attendants. Dad deserves some R&R every now and then.

The Gifted Dad: Daddy-To-Be

Presents for new parents are usually geared toward mom and baby, but expectant dads shouldn't be left in the dark. Give the daddy-to-be a few gifts that will have him prepared and excited for the impending arrival.

An expectant father is not always ready to give up his music collection for Baby Einstein and Barney. With the Rockabye Baby albums, he'll really be able to rock his lil one to sleep.
When dad's on duty he's not going to be thrilled to take your Petunia Pickle bag to the park. The Diaper Dude looks like a messenger bag, but is equipped to carry bottles, diapers, and other baby essentials.
Paternity leave doesn't hold a candle to maternity leave. When daddy is back at his desk dreaming of his bundle of joy, he'll love a digital photo frame to remind him of one of the reasons he's working so hard in the first place.

For as long as I can remember, I've always given my dad socks, underwear, books, and golf balls for Christmas. Every now and then I'll find one spectacular gift, but most of the time it's the same old stuff. The wrapping paper is all crumbled up, and the milk and cookies are long gone. Now that Saint Nick has come and gone, we want to know how the old man did this year.

When we inquired about holiday budgets, some parents planned on a thrifty $50 limit per child while others expected to spend $1,500 or more. While many moms and dads would agree that the holidays are more about spending time together as a family, the gift-giving often takes over and makes a hero out of Santa Claus or whomever the generous person may be. Do tell, how did Santa do on the gift sweep this season?

The holidays are ripe with rich family traditions - from opening one present on Christmas Eve, making homemade treats, cutting down a tree to wearing silly matching PJs and giving dad or grandpa the gift of ugly ties. In my family, taking a photo of the entire crew in their Christmas Day garb has been a staple tradition since I was a child, but we sneak in plenty of more seasonal and fun customs - especially now that the "kids" have kids - like making popcorn and watching Christmas flicks and eating my aunt's almost inedible fruitcake. What is your family's favorite holiday practice?
