Gas prices are still soaring, and outrageously priced airline tickets paired with baggage fees are keeping many families grounded this holiday season. Instead of giving thanks at a table of aunts, uncles, and grandparents, many folks will be sharing a meal with neighborhood friends and their immediate family.

Kidoodles: Thanksgiving Tablecloth

Since Thanksgiving is next week, we thought you could use a simple arts and crafts project to entertain your kiddos and help you prepare for the holiday. Let your children be in charge of the tablecloth. They will appreciate the opportunity to get involved and relish the chance to get a lil messy - all in the name of helping out!

You just need the following items:

A piece of butcher paper (white works well with all colors)
A few sponges
Festive colored paints
A few pieces of blank paper
Scissors
Plates or bowls for paints
Markers or crayons

First, measure the table so you know how much butcher paper you will need. Once you have that, cut the paper and place it on a flat even surface like the floor or table top.

Next, draw whatever designs you want to use on the tablecloth and draw them on a piece of paper no bigger than the sponge you will use.

Once you have completed your drawing, cut it out and trace it on the sponge. Then cut along the traced line so you have your sponge design.

Now you are ready for the fun part! Put some paint in the plates or bowls and dip one side of the sponge into the paint. Gently press it onto the butcher paper. Voila! Use different colors and shapes to fill the paper.

Once it's all dried up, let your little ones draw on the paper and write "Happy Thanksgiving" or "I am thankful for ...", or a saying of their choice.

Finally, put the cloth on the table and ask your lil helpers to set it with plates and silverware!

Start Giving Thanks Early This Year

The turkey is cooked, the gravy is steaming and the cranberries are waiting to pop. Just before families dig into their fruitful feast, they sit down to give thanks for the past year's blessings. Instead of waiting until the end of the month, start a new family tradition and have everyone start writing down things they are thankful for at the dinner table every night leading up to the festivities. Hand out a pen and piece of paper to each person. After they write (or in wee cases - dictate) have them toss the papers into one bucket to be read at the holiday family gathering. It is sure to provide a warm and fuzzy moment for everyone when weeks full of thanksgivings are read aloud at the table. Take it a step further and save the scraps in a book that can be cherished every year.

Kidoodles: Make Turkey Place Cards

Add a personal touch to your Thanksgiving celebration. Cooking the meal and getting everything ready is usually left to the adults, so let your children chip in by making festive place cards. These adorable lil art pieces will customize your decor while allowing junior to bring something special to the table.

List of things you need:

Nontoxic ink pad or paint
Blank place cards or cut squares (about 5 inches x 3 inches) of plain white paper folded in half
Markers

Steps to make the place cards:

Press a thumb into the inkpad or into the paint and then on paper to print a turkey's body. Use the same technique with fingertips other than the thumb to create a head and feathers. Your child can give the turkey as little or as many feathers as he'd like.
Once the turkey's body, head, and feathers are dry, draw on a beak, wattle, and feet (and any other decorative touches he'd like) using the markers. Write the guests' names on the cards and place at the table.
