The turkey is cooked, the gravy is steaming and the cranberries are waiting to pop. Just before families dig into their fruitful feast, they sit down to give thanks for the past year's blessings. Instead of waiting until the end of the month, start a new family tradition and have everyone start writing down things they are thankful for at the dinner table every night leading up to the festivities.

One of my fondest childhood memories is watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV while my mom began our holiday dinner preparations. I have begun passing the tradition on to my children as we gather in front of the tube to see their favorite characters make their way to Herald Square. With Snoopy, Horton, Dora and Kermit in the lineup this year, will you be tuning in with your kids?

Most everyone has memories of their turkey days growing up. Every one of mine was spent surrounded by family — sometimes in Georgia, but most times In Texas. Post chowing down on broccoli and rice casserole followed up by a sampler plate of pies, we all fell asleep in front of the college football games and waited for the Dallas Cowboys to take on the Houston Oilers.

Take a few minutes with your family and start a little holiday keepsake — a journal of thanks. In a notebook or journal, have each member of the family write down what they are thankful for this year. If your children are too young to write themselves, transcribe it for them.

If you're cooking the holiday dinner at your house and plan on hosting a few lil ones, it's a good idea to set up a baby buffet of sorts. Since many of the standard side dishes on the Thanksgiving menu are soft, kid-friendly foods — soups, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, sweet potatoes, creamed vegetables and doughy rolls or biscuits, the gesture will only add a few minutes to your prep time.
Simply, set aside a bit of each basic dish before adding the ingredients that young children don't care for or can't have —nuts, marshmallows, herbs, shellfish, etc.
