Trendtotting: Silver Cross Prams

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony pranced their way through a People magazine spread - each pushing a Silver Cross pram that costs a whopping $2,900. But, when you're getting a cool six million for the shoot, I guess $2,900 is a drop in the bucket, though who knows if they even had to pay for them.

Following in their footsteps, trendsetting mama Nicole Richie and rocker Joel Madden posed for Harper's Bazaar with their babe in a Silver Cross pram.

On their website, Silver Cross boasts that it's been trusted by the British Royal family for generations. Well, if it's good enough for Queen Elizabeth, it's probably fine for Harlow Madden and Max and Emme Muniz.

But, if all the high falootin' Tinseltown mamas replaced their Orbits and Bugaboos with Silver Cross prams, there'd be enough LA sidewalk traffic jams to rival those on the freeways.

Silver Cross's Doodle Offers Longevity in a High chair

We spend so much time researching baby gear that we often don't see the forest through the trees. Most of the products are used for such a short period of time that before we know it, they are sent to storage until another tot is ready to use it. Silver Cross, the British company best known for its celeb-endorsed prams, is introducing a new solution to the time-sensitive high chair. The Silver Cross Doodle Chair ($220), which is set to hit stores this month, quickly and easily converts from a high chair to a tot-sized table and chairs with little more than a few clicks. As a high chair, the Doodle features a five-point harness system, wipeable cushions, and an adjustable seat. Once transformed into a play table, it has an underneath storage tray and detachable crayon and pencil cups. With its clean modern lines and neutral color options, the Doodle may be the ideal solution to baby gear that grows with your lil one.

Strollin': Silver Cross Pop

Having reviewed quite a few strollers last month, there were still quite a few on my list that I have been wanting to check out before making any final purchases. Silver Cross is a high end brand that has long been known for their swank prams like those that Nicole Richie and Jennifer Lopez chose for their tots. Realizing that many more moms see the practicality of a simple stroller, the British company is now selling their own line of simple pushchairs.

Still fairly new to the US market, Silver Cross manufactures three lightweight buggies for young tots: the Pop, Micro and Dazzle. All three of the strollers remind me quite a bit of different Maclarens.

The Silver Cross Pop ($150) is probably most similar to the Maclaren Quest in design and capabilities. The padded seat reclines slightly allowing tots to take a relaxing rest though it does not ease back all the way for newborn usage. The leg rest gives youngsters a padded place to rest their legs while they stay safely strapped into a five-point-harness belt that unfortunately is not too easy to snap and unlatch. Perhaps with a little extra practice, mommy's hands may become more agile at such maneuvering, but I found it a tad too difficult for my liking.

On the plus side, the ride is pretty smooth for a stroller with plastic wheels and for moms who prefer to walk the line, the wheels can be locked. Additional benefits are the folding mechanism, size, and weight. A quick trip to the store would be a cinch in the Pop as it only weighs 15 pounds and has a convenient shoulder strap attached to the back for slinging over a toting shoulder. Almost identical to a Maclaren's collapse, the Pop breaks down with a quick foot push on a lever and an upward lift of the middle bar in the back.

The basket underneath the seat provides enough room for a jug of milk and a shopping bag while the ergonomic inward facing handle bars provide mommy an extra set of hands from which she can hang a diaper bag or other necessary items.

I have to admit that I find the Maclaren a tad easier. Still the new kid on the block, the Silver Cross has room and time to improve and I'm sure it will. After all, I'm sure Silver Cross customer Marcia Cross is a fan of the brand for more than the name.

Whose Style Suits You Better?

Natural beauty Angelina Jolie is stunning on People's latest cover. The actress poses with partner Brad Pitt and their twins, Knox and Vivienne, looking every bit like a postpartum mom. Gorgeous features and model figure aside, the mom of six went sans-makeup with bedhead hair in a white nightgown. Who needs props when you have older siblings Maddox, Pax, Zahara, and Shiloh doting on the family's newest darling additions?

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony had a posh photo shoot where the new parents looked perfectly styled, coiffed, and thrilled to be pushing their twins in pricey matching Silver Cross prams. Known for her humanitarian work around the world, it doesn't surprise me that Angelina Jolie would settle for a no-frills setting in her home. Jenny From the Block has a stylish image to uphold, so seeing her draped in couture with diamond earrings suits her just fine.

Nicole Richie Takes the Orbit for a Stroll

In less than a year Nicole Richie has made the unlikely shift from young Hollywood style icon to trendsetting mommy and we love her for it. We've been watching her push her Orbit stroller through Los Angeles recently and though it's not as glamorous as the Silver Cross pram she showed off in Harper's Bazaar, her Orbit deserves functional, yet chic recognition. I adore the Orbit Baby collection because it comes in pieces - a car seat, stroller and base. You can update your baby's ride as he or she grows instead of having to purchase a new stroller. The infant set costs about $900.
